Hello,
I'm not sure if I will ever find an MMO home again... after 35 levels of SWTOR I looked in and said to myself.. id rather be playing WoW... so I unsubbed... I don't want to play WoW... but its simply a better version of SWTOR IMO.
I'd like something different. I'm really looking for something without a quest based leveling system. IF the game didnt have tab targeting taht would be even better but mainly im looking for no quests (or a very low amout). I'd prefer to grind mobs over quests but a game with neither old school mob grind or quests would be best.
I was looking into EQ because it's going to go F2P in a week or so and there will be lots of new people... but it looks like over the years they have turned it into a quest based game.
What do I do? =(

isnt mortal online broken?
Remember Old School Ultima Online
EQ was turned into quest heavy game, but when I played it last year for the first parts of the new progression servers people were grouping a lot and camping mobs like the good old days. There was also lots of drama in the top guilds camping planes though. And having a new expansion every month made it imposible for the casual gamer to experience it all. UO was also changed to a quest based games but when I play that you can just ignore them and raise your skills fighting in dungeons. There are lot of places to hunt in UO now. And then there is Darkfall, i havent played it because its supposedly horribly unbalanced but I've read it was just grinding for skills.
Depends who you talk to.
There are some bugs in huge pvp battles , but if you arent trying to conquer the world then you really wont notice much at all. In other words I havent incurred a bug in 3 months at least.
But Ive been playing basically since it came out and the game has improved alot since beta. So if you are talking to someone who hasnt played since beta it is still broken.
On the other hand the game is awesome.
Matter of fact its all I can think about anymore when its quiet. Today spent the day crushing rocks and killing spiders for their silk. Tonight I may walk my fisherman to the ocean and fish some more.
Pretty much, yeah.
Unless you go back in time there'll be no finding quest based games outside of a VERY select few sandboxes like Eve, Darkfall, Tale in the Desert, ect.
Even EVE and DF have quests, especially at the beginning. But yeah, I see you used the word "Based".
For me its either Mortal or DF(as I find playing a spaceship not so immersive).
Or else you could just join the WoW-Rift-Swtor-GW2'ers.
Or another route is the hate on all games and play starcraft once a week crowd.
LOL
I really don't want to be a disgruntled gamer but it's becoming harder and harder.
What is lineage 2 like... does it have quests?
Remember Old School Ultima Online
I don't know about Lineage II, but I'm going to check out the Darkfall free trial. It would be nice to have someone to play with if anyone wants to join me.
Lineage 2 is quest based. it's also a click to move game.
I actually followed DF prior to launch obsessively. It was a pretty empty game when it came live. I beeve it has improved a lot but they are launchign a new version of the game soon(tm) which has resulted in very low pops on the servers. I plan on giving darkfall 2.0 a shot though...

I dont know about the OP, but for me the problem with the new games isnt that they have quests. Even old EQ had quests. I think the problem is the amount of forced single player quests. One after another. You never have an empty quest log. The original reason to play MMOs is to for the co-op gameplay and it's hard to find that anymore. I tried SWTOR and the quests were insanely boring but I really like the flashpoints. I thought the classes were well balanced and they were challenging enough to replay. However, there wasnt a lot and once people did them once they didnt want to replay. Instead they went back to the single player game until another flashpoint mission was available. I tried LOTRO and even put some money into it. The instances were quick and fun but it took way too long to find a group. I would spend over an hour LFG for a 20min instance or skrimish. Like other games it has a ingame LFG system that no one uses.
I completely agree. After playing a new game just about every month just to get bored, I've realized that the reason the games weren't fun was because I would end up playing alone most of the time. Most new MMOs don't really encourage teaming up as much as they should. Obviously I occasionally played with friends from real life, which was when I had the most fun, but when they weren't there wasn't much of a way to find others to play with. This is exactly what caused just about every MMO I've played up to date to fail. I don't play games to grind to max level and be the best, I play because its fun when you're doing things with friends. The quests found in modern MMOs encourage solo gameplay and there is very little co-op, which makes the games way less fun.
Hey man, I'll be going EQ when it becomes F2P. I played EQ a long time ago, it was great. The (good) quests were usually too long and difficult to be able to be completed in a day, so you basically spent time with friends grinding/exploring new zones and free time working on your quest. OR you could have a couple buddies join you in accomplishing the quest more quickly (questing was by no means mandatory).. Since then, I've revisited EQ a few times and they have made changes I am dissatisfied with, but am willing to cope with if it is F2P.
The changes they've made are basically that leveling is a lot easier. (I made it to lv 50 within a week, ~4hrs a day). The death penalty is only exp loss (you used to have to retrieve your armor/items from your corpse). And you can now get henchmen, which are basically NPCs that run around with you and help you kill things.
If it "looks like they turned it into a quest based game", then you saw it wrong. Questing is still by no means mandatory. Hell, the low level quests are basically a waste of time now because the rewards you get (equipment, items, etc.) are outdated. BUT there is still light at the end of the tunnel! Once you get to the top heavy side of EQ, you are doin guild raids, epic quests, exploring, grinding, etc.
I hope to see you on EQ, my friend. :]
If you never played EQ, I would highly suggest it, it is the best MMO I have ever played. I am thinking about reactivating my accounts again and playing on progression until something decent comes out. EQ did have quests, but you really did not do them too much. The only thing with EQ that I could see be as a problem is that if you join a regular server there will be nobody at low levels grouping. And if you join progression, you may find some people but I am not sure how far along they are. Either way EQ solo is 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000x better than any of these WoW clones in general. And so much better when you group and raid.
Edit: Although I do not know if they are still doing it, but if you have somebody invite you to the game you can start off at level 51.
As far as DF and MO go. Darkfall use to be fun, but you cannot really enjoy the game unless you play with other people, but the past few times I have logged on, I have seen maybe one person.
MO is fun if you get with a guild, but you do see people on. Its pretty fun because at night you cannot see well, you can hide in bushes. Today I was being chased by someone from AQ, ran into a group of bushes and lost him, of course I came out and there were 3 members of AQ also looking for me so they did get me, but you can have a good time. There are some bugs, I have yet to crash like it use to. In Fab I usually see about 10-20 people or so at any given time of the day.
You wait, like me.
Be careful what you wish for though, tab targetting really is the best combat system. TPS and FPS games are not only impossible right now because of technology restraints, but they cause a ton of other issues and require designers to create workaround that just aren't efficient, and look plain bad. UI mode, combat mode, adventure mode, pre-loading skills and spells that require two button clicks instead of one, pushes away casuals and less coordinated people, creates targetting exploits.. especially in games with murder systems, makes looting look weird, spell spam flying all over the place like in DF... So on and so forth.
It works in games like skyrim, but MMO's are not single player games. I understand the mindset, but it just doesn't, and hasn't worked well in MMO's.
There are other types of combat than tab/twitch... action(like tera) or turn based for example.

EQs quests were and still are to this day about gear/faction or progression never about exp.
The only good way to be able to lvl your char is in groups or solo if you a solo class. You gotta understand that EQ is not just about lvls its about your abillity to play your char with some degree of skill .
Fist off you have to lvl up your skills and spells then your gear so you have the correct lvl of focus then you have aa that if you dont know how to use them then there is no point in haveing them.
Finaly you have to learn how to play as a team cause when you get to the higer lvl zones you can forget your merc even a t5 merc isnt able for most of the top end zone mobs.
Eq is just as much fun as it was back in the old days ( more so in some cases ) and i am looking foward to F2P allthough i will keep my 3 sups.
I wont play F2P/B2P simpley cause you get a a lot of morons playing which really pisses me off. But with EQ you cant play like a moron cause 2 things will happen one you will die a lot and 2 nobody will play with you and trust me EQ players use general chat alot and it wont be long before bad unskilled players gets known to all.
So if you players that are just used to playing WoW like games and decide you want a real challenge then come on over to EQ
and give it a try and dont forget to ask for help (not for PL as that in the long run will hurt you as a player)l
EQ is the only non quest based game I can think of anymore. Can't wait til it goes F2P. I can't play quest based games anymore, I just can't do it.
I'm having no problems LFG in Lotro. While it does have a LFG system that no one uses, there is a globalLFF channel that has plenty of people in it.
Indeed. It just so old...
Anyway, I am playing the trial for EQ right now and its all quests atm.. =
