I personally dont think FFA games are as harsh as some people make them out to be. Shadowbane was FFA and it just gave more reason to be in a good close guild. Yeah I had my share of getting pk'd by a group of high lvls but all in all, it didnt happen as much as some people would think it does.
To be compeltely honest I had a better PVP experience in DAOC which was not FFA than shadowbane. Im not against FFA but I liked how in daoc there was reason for all who wanted to pvp to go to a certain area and get there groove on. FFA being pvp everywhere and anywhere gives tends to dilute the pvp. Since it can happen everywhere, it does happen everywhere and not in one area.
It's about the closest mmo to UO that is soon to launch and has ideal balance for PvP, with twich-based combat - enjoy! Benny.............................................

Those who enjoy open PvP environments get upset for this main reason. We are happily killing each other when someone who didnt read the description of the game logs in, gets zapped and then crys their eyes out on the forums until the game is changed. This is how it always works... and like others have previously said... all we wanted was ONE DAMN GAME where you can enjoy an open play experience. There are SO MANY PvE dedicated games that its actually hard to find somewhere to be REAL unless you want to play 5 year old games.
Thats the main whine of old school UO players.
Everytime write this stuff I feel compelled to add that I was never a PK and I played for most of my 6 years in UO on a damn modem and even when I did get on top of someone in PvP I died from LAG!!
What all you people who think PvE is all there is fail to realise because your too soft to try it... is that open PvP environments are 100 times more exciting to play in whether you engage in PvP or not. The knwledge that you could be jumped at anytime adds a whole new dimension to the game. You dont realise that the reason so many of the current MMO's are so boring that you just want to take your own life rather than play them is that there is NO CHALLENGE!!!

And is this person who gets "zapped" as soon as they log on a noob with no skill nor knowledge who wants to get a feel for the game, learn a thing or two, get some equipment, and THEN go PvPing, all while not having to worry about being killed and going right back to square 1, only to have the exact same thing done in the end? Im going with blittzz on this one.
I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.
Note: While I do make a few real points in a very sideways sort of way (at least I think ), note placement of tongue in cheek.
I think it would be cool if there was a modern game that at least had some hardcore PvP servers (non-consensual PvP, full corpse looting, horrific death penalties, pooing on the corpses of your slain foes..the works). A game where as soon as I log I get ganked by some guy 100 levels higher then me, he steals all my meager possesions, and then laughs about how he "pwnd me" and calls me a "noobtard tool" while he desecrates my corpse . . . isn't really my style personally. But I do think it sucks that there's really nothing out there for the folks that like that sort of thing.
I agree with some posters that it is a bit annoying that the hardcore PvPers are all like "pansy carebear" this and that. However, I see can that they are just cranky because it seems like major developers are catering to the every whim of the "likes co-op PvE, wants to be an elf" crowd while they get nothing. If the only MMORPGs on the market (or even in development) were various "Barbie's Unicorn Adventure" style games, I'd be cranky too.
So I say let them (the hardcore PvPers) have their threads where they go on about the "good old days" getting gang banged by 14 year old dickheads in UO. Don't flame them, or whine "I'm not a carebare! I'm not! I'm not!" They don't mean to offend you personally, they are just cranky and need to lash out. And if a real hardcore PvP game comes along, don't bash it. Just stay away from it, and let them have their online nerdstyle S&M fun.

Well your post seems to make the basic assumption that no one ever joins an open PvP game succesfully after about week 4. Which is of course nonsense! Many many people have joined games like UO and Shadowbane in year 1, 2 and beyond and gone on to be extremely successful.
Again I say to you it comes down to whether you want a challenge or a nice cotton ball environment to prance about safely in.... thats all...

How about this. How about we take a game, put a giant continenant in it, make 2 player sides, make an NPC side (for PvE) Make a FFA area in the middle where anything goes, where the monsters drop the best stuff where every vies for them, Make "safe zones" where people who dotn want to PvP can PvE safely, and make everywhere outside these zones a Faction vs Faction warzone. They would satisfy just about everybody.
-OR-
Just put in some safe PvE zones and make everywhere else a FFA area.
Btw Razorback, I was trying to say that most people want to PvP when they want to . But yes, I think you people deserve at least 1 total FFA PvP game.
I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.
I'm suprised no one mentioned AC - Darktide. That game ruled, but the community is just dead now and everyone macros.
Anyway,
I love open-PvP (like Darktide). It makes things more exciting and I know it's not for everyone, which is why I respect those who prefer PvE or non-FFA PvP. (Like the other 8-9 servers AC had). I've been looking for a game that had some good open PvP similar to AC - Darktide but have come up dry.
Basically, the most fair way to do it is include servers that are open-PvP and then ones that are PvE with optional PvP.

I think PvE zones to level up are the best idea really. DAoC did this rather well, so you could level up to basically 30ish without really having to leave the safe zones... but again it got rather boring... and even thought I tended to get ganked a lot I found myself out hunting elf and firbolg types with my Huntress in my 20's. It was very satisfying to take players higher than you by surprises in their home zones with such a low character and made the many deaths and having to walk all the way back again (1 hour plus if you lived) usually worth it.... Till they nerfed Archery of course

Already a game doing that. It's called Irth. Nowhere near release yet but it looks promising. We'll see if it makes it off the developer's table or not. They are in open beta. I DL'd and tried it out... not bad but it still needs a lot of work, which the devs seem to admit.
There are a couple others looming but Irth is the only one that I'm able to try out at this point.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online. Sig image Pending Still in: A couple Betas
Originally posted by Horsas What's up guys. Your probably in the same boat as me right now. You are either: ... Unfortunately every MMORPG out right now is carebear as hell. So seriously what the hell happened? I don't understand how these MMORPGs came to be.
I am going to assume that, despite your language and insults (you DO intend to insult with the "carebear" thing), you ARE serious in your core question and so I will attempt a serious answer. Perhaps there can be reasonable dialogue after that and perhaps not (usually not).
What happened is fairly simple and primarily economic. Please remember back to the early UO days (and be fair about your memory). The PK issue was rampant - it was NOT just a few isolated events - it was simply rampant. I played beginning immediately after UO release and continued for some time. However, the PKing was so bad that it was very, very difficult to play and enjoy playing the game. Virtually every single PKer I met (and died to btw) was doing what they did solely to annoy me (and the others they PKed) - there was NO roleplay. One could tell by the language they used and the things they said. Further (and more specific to the game itself) there was NOTHING at all a PKed player could do to get any justice on the PKer - NOTHING. There was no way to "hunt" the PKer down (no tracking skills, etc.) and even if you found one all he had to do was log off (or use a recall rune) and he was safe from retribution. And so all that really came of this was that many, many players had their play disrupted over and over until the company realized that players were leaving the game in droves and thus were forced (for economic reasons) to change the game a bit. That is it - plain and simple. Other game developers realized this and in one fashion or another followed suit. EQ (the next big one) tried to give the gaming community the choice (giving them their own PK server) only to find that nobody played on it (or at least not enough to make economic sense). There you have it.
Now (before you label me a pure carebear) please understand that I DO want a full, open PvP environment. BUT. There is a HUGE but - there MUST be systems in place in the game (and likely out of game as well) to prevent or minimize the PK problems. I think that a quality game will need to include a variety of in game systems to give players the ability to PvP (totally different from PK) AND at the same time counter PvP (get revenge, justice, etc.). For example, the game should have in game skills for tracking down "criminals", systems for providing real in game motives for killing and a quality system of justice - these are just three off the top of my head.
All MMORPGS decided to get rid of griefers like you.
Thats what happened.
Go Play EQ1 on the Sullon Zek server. That should satisfy your lust for griefing. Of course you will be the one getting griefed for some time before you are able do any on your own.. HA HA HA HA.....
====================== It's just me, so open the door.
If you don't have the skill to beat them then you should ask someone else to kill them. If you were a newb you could become better it is not like there was any uber items that you could lose. To answer the posters question, no there is not a single even half decent MMO out at the moment. People now days want everything handed to them with no risk and that is why 99% of games coming out are all carebear. Some salvation coming with Roma Victor and quite possibly Darkfall. I have never in my 8 years of MMO gaming met a pvper/pk who was actually doing it to piss the other person off. To believe that is ignorant. Also, the idea of pvpers being dumb is foolish because if you think about it which is harder to fight? A monser that uses no strategy/tactics or a player who can think and learn new tactics. Honestly which is the bigger challenge here?

Then you have either been VERY lucky or you don't really talk to the Pkers (note there is a HUGE difference between PvP and PK). I played UO for approximately a year starting from market release and I can tell you that virtually (there were a couple of exceptions) every PKer that got me and others that I spoke to in towns were reveling in my unhappiness at them ruining my game play. You, sir, are the ignorant one here.

There was probabaly more blues who were trashtalking, specially after they got killed. I lost count how many times someone came back newly ressed to just talk crap about how lame i was. I usually reskilled these players and then they proceed to tell how they were going to page gm on me. All trammel did was move these trashtalkers to safe and they started to trashtalk when camping at spawns "MINE!!" etc.
Pkers could not even go into town without getting killed so you could not have talked to them there. I would assume you were talking to It was probably not meant as a personal attack so don't take it as one. Trashtalking and having joy from destroying someone's fun is not the same thing.

I am just about to terminate this conversation because it is pretty clear to me that you ARE not listening - only looking for any loophole you can to justify yourself. Let me make it as perfectly CLEAR as I can for someone like you.
I spoke with MANY RED PK ASSHOLES as I can begin to count. They were RED - NOT BLUE. I KNOW what a PKer is - even if you don't. They stand there and gloat over the ghost. If I bother to come back (I did many times in an attempt to talk to them and make sense of what they were doing to me (and many, many, many, many, many others) - all they did was laugh at our loss and if we bothered to come back in flesh form, they would just camp our corpse area to kill us again and again (as long as we were willing to come back). I did this until it became perfectly clear to me (and to many, many, many, many others) that these people were simply out to have fun at our expense - no roleplay at all. And how DO I know (besides talking to them in and out of game) that there were many, many, many other players disgusted like I was? Simple. Because at this point players in large numbers began to complain to GMs and the game developers - and they changed the game. They changed the game because far, far too many asshole PKers were ruining the game for many, many more paying customers who were making it perfectly clear they would leave the game entirely if something was not done. Leaving all the worthless PKers to complain by themselves - with nobody to PK except themselves - which they apparently didn't want to do (no fun there).

Got to ask how much of an IQ does it take to read the box the game comes in. How much IQ would it take, i ask to check out the games web site.
Nope you show your IQ by comming to a forum and spit insults and cry and throw a tantrum about how some person bested you in a game. Thought it was Just a game.
Cry more
If you cant handle it dont play it. Grow a pair. You come to sites like these and just cry and cry and cry more.
I mean us older gamers find it really funny at times but i mean, damn dont you think a bucket of runny nose goo and a river of tears is a little much.
I thought it was just a game?
That is common sense. I think the result stems from too much Nintendo and not enough PC gaming exp.
Pking and open pvping where going on since the old old mud days.
tag Carebears are for peoples like you that run off to these forum type boards and form your poor me conventions about how you got owned by someone cause your gaming skill sucks.

Anyway,
I love open-PvP (like Darktide). It makes things more exciting and I know it's not for everyone, which is why I respect those who prefer PvE or non-FFA PvP. (Like the other 8-9 servers AC had). I've been looking for a game that had some good open PvP similar to AC - Darktide but have come up dry.
Basically, the most fair way to do it is include servers that are open-PvP and then ones that are PvE with optional PvP.
stealing and robbing people in a game eh???
hahahah thats exactly wat made runescape fun (yes i admit that i played dat game)
but yea i think that runescape is the closest to what you people want (play it or not up to you.)
About 5 points higher than the average whiner.... but we make up for it by having testicles... ever wondered why your voice was so high pitched ?

Already a game doing that. It's called Irth. Nowhere near release yet but it looks promising. We'll see if it makes it off the developer's table or not. They are in open beta. I DL'd and tried it out... not bad but it still needs a lot of work, which the devs seem to admit.
There are a couple others looming but Irth is the only one that I'm able to try out at this point.

It's just me, so open the door.

Only Carebears care.
