Hahah.. the famous mmorpg.com version of Failed MMOS. Comedy gold.
Pretty much only failed/underperforming MMOs have gone FTP.
And are you going to try to argue that AoC wasn't a failure?
Define failure to me please. Because these forums have way too many verions of 'failure'. And no AO wasn't a failure and it is still not F2P just the classic game is free.
Every thread I see on the main page is for TERA/GW2, two of the most overly hyped games. With the impending release of this game why are not more people talking about this game? I for one am really looking forward to it.
Considering Funcoms shortcomings in the past, I'm willing to bet that the majority of the players are somewhat reluctant to go though another painful release.
It doesn't feel like they are doing well either, they've cut down on the PvP content something all to similiar to what happened with AoC.
I absolutely love the setting however and as long as GW2 isn't released to close to TSW, I will def. get it. Been spending to much time on the TSW forums the last few years to simply give up on it.
Besides atleast they are better than Bioware at writing (I know shocking isn't it), if you're in doubt check out The Longest Journey and Dreamfall.

So, by your line of logic, GW2 is a failure right from the start. Because, you know, their developers didn't even have the courage to test the water with a P2P model before going B2P with cash shop. Right?
The reality is that the developers chose the model that would give them perhaps the maximum amount of money, given their playerbase. There is a reason WoW is making more money now, although they lost so many subscribers recently and there is a reason there aren't more than five pure P2P games in the market and they become fewer by the day.
Bottom line, my guess is that TSW will follow the AoC monetisation model exactly. It makes sense after all, it's a model that works for them. If you don't like that model, then you have two choices:
Play the game as subscriber, but never touch the shop (what I'm doing with LOTRO)
Don't play the game at all.
Ultimately it's your decision if you're going to play a game with cash shop attached. However, if cash shop is a major deterrent factor from playing MMORPGs, then the bad news is that the pure P2P model is becoming extinct. So you'll either have to find your niche in a hybrid model that works for you, or move on to other entertainment avenues.

funny. it feels like a game which is still in development and not about to be released for 2-3 years to me. never see much on it and it's about as mysterious as the world it's trying to represent.
could also be that, traditionally, most mmos are fantasy or scifi, and you don't really know what tsw is going for.
i like the look of its concept, though and will definitely be checking it out.
Its mmo 3460 in a dozen that does nothing new or special in any way.
Funcom...do i realy need to say more.
People have a very very bad taste from Funcom.
Also there aint much info on the game and thats not good for people who are needed to be coninvenced before they buy their next mmo that might fail hard.
MMO's sell well but the drop off when bought is much higher then they gain.
GW2 and AA are looking that much better and have much more info availeble.

Actually it does. But i am not going to write a lenghty post about it when you can just check the features list to inform yourself better.
I actually think Archeage is more overhyped. That game do look very interesting but we don´t even know if the game ever will be released in English or not. But that is just on this site, I havn´t even seen it mentioned somewhere else.
TSW is not really that hyped if you compare it to how hyped AoC was just before release.
The most overhyped game around otherwise is Diablo 3, PC magazines seems to think that it is the second comming or something. Yeah, it is not a MMO but it have a forum here so it should be counted.

yet.
it's not an mmo YET.
i live each day gnawing on my fingers in fear.
between Titan and wow 2 (which i can bet money on that Blizzard will start making soon if they havn't already) I don't see any time and to make a "World of Diablo".
They could have made it instead of Titan but they didn´t.
Funcom tried to win the "hype" wars against old rival Mythic Studios... and lost... well both did.
Now they've learned that the key to success is not to hype your game... but to keep it secret. It is THE SECRET WORLD. If it was being talked about it would lose its mystique as an underground cool game.
I know a lot of people think GW2 and TERA are being overhyped. But I disagree. If you watched coverage of the YEAR before the launch of Age of Conan and Warhammer Online you'd see overhyped. These guys are getting about a month's coverage... that's nothing.

Agreed. I hardly even seen anything about tera anywhere else. there are some stuff about GW2 though but there were actually more about AoC and WAR before their launch than about GW2.
And frankly do GW2 show a lot than what those games showed, they just showed low level areas before launch. There were countless reviews of Tortage before AoC released but really nothing at all about high level zones like Khesh, they just showed the small part of the game they already perfected.
FC seems to have learned something and have hyped TSW a lot less.
The lack of information though does seem worrisome, so relatively close to release (if they don't postpone it of course). It could be part of their strategy, it's The Secret World after all. Or it could be that what we've already shown of the game is the only things they've actually got ready at this point.
TSW is still a day one purchase for me, but I don't dismiss the possibility that Funcom will launch the game unfinished ... again.
Whats there to hype? I can't support a game that has the last 3 points so its a pass,
Yeah. This + lack of information / footage. I won't be jumping on this boat until other people have played it extensively and were allowed to give their opinions. i.e. a few months post launch.
I will be playing this because I love Ragnar Tornquist's storytelling / writing abilities. So....whether I end up liking or loathing (or somewhere in between) the game, I will be reporting back here.....especially for YOU! (Yes....I'm e-flirting on a forum...I'm naughty.)
Anywhoozle....I will be reporting back on the pros and cons of TSW. I already said that. Oh my....I got flustered. I will give my "official" review about 3 months post-launch, per your suggestion.
*scrapes hoof shyly*
Fanks you, just1opinion.
I'm looking forward to your writings and findings.

It really is exactly what they did with AOC. They kept the NDA up until almost the last possible minute. The devs hyped it, but nobody who was actually playing it was allowed to say anything. Then they did the open beta, which was only 2 weeks, and only had the first 20 levels. Those of us in the closed beta were told a miracle patch was coming on launch day that would bring up the quality of the game after level 20 to be the same as the first level 20 and would fix the stability issues.
Someone asked to define a failure in an MMO... when you lose 50% of your players after the free month is over. When you are down 75% after 3 months... and your game never again reaches the level you had even at 3 months, let alone the first month.
The lack of gameplay videos makes me believe Funcom is doing it again. The closed beta people are being gagged, and the open beta will be very short and will have extremely limited content... of course Funcom will tell you that it is to maintain the secret.
Every thread I see on the main page is for TERA/GW2, two of the most overly hyped games. With the impending release of this game why are not more people talking about this game? I for one am really looking forward to it.
Hype: A fad. A clever marketing strategy which a product is advertized as the thing everyone must have.
So far, the only people posting about GW2 have been the individuals talking about the game and the people who actually played at the cons, and the people who have been talking about the listed features from the videos and from the dev posts about the game in forums. Let me explain to you about how GW2 hasn't been hyped. It hasn't had 30+ websites going on and on about how it's 9/10 it hasn't had tv ads or ads posted inside youtube videos, it hasn't had advertisement articles bought and paid for in major magazines. So where exactly is the marketing coming from? Word of mouth has been the only thing occurring about GW2, that's not a bought and paid for ad campaign, that's just people talking about it.
TERA on the other hand has had marketing. It's not quite the Scale of my example above (of a game that starts with an S and was released before it should have been) but it has had ads. It's not being overhyped to the scale of that other game either even with Ads it's just people are excited for a new combat system (and that's all frankly that i can see about that game)
When the NDA is lifted on TSW they will advertise the living crapspackle out of it trust me, they did it with AoC they'll do it again.
But please people know what you are talking about when you claim something's been advertized because as it stands GW2's fandom only originated from the network of people with cams and forum posts, they haven't advertized a single thing yet.

Somebody missed the GW2 manifesto? They pretty much trolled the whole mmorpg community with that video alone. I hope it works out well for them, but I suspect a lot of people are in for a rude awakening when they discover that GW2 is merely an evolution of previous features and not the revolution they convinced themselves it will be.

dude, this crap is beeing made by Funcom.. and people have a long memory.
People know what Funcom means.. so people who know Funcom, are not even interested in this games beta, much less on the game itself, cos they know that will be just more bulldung feed to the masses with high doses of marketing and nothing else.

I'm pretty sure Jesus pre-ordered GW2. People keep saying he's gonna show up.
