Final Fantasy XIV: The Future of FFXIV Interview

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

We had the chance recently to sit down with Naoki Yoshida, producer on Final Fantasy XIV about all the changes coming down the pipe to the game, and how the new team expects to really turn things around for the venerable series' second MMO installment. Yoshida talks about 1.21 and the many things ahead leading into version 2.0.

I consider patch 1.21 to be the final step in our plan to rework the current version of FFXIV that we’ve been working on over the past year. We revamped the battle system and user interface within the limitations of the current server structure and UI specifications and I can definitely say that we have gone over everything within our original scope. Of course, that doesn’t mean we’re satisfied with where we are, which is why we are working on the 2.0 re-launch in the first place. We plan on continuing to put forth our utmost effort as we move forward. With that said, the main points of patch 1.21 are:

  • Implementation of seven jobs and the job system

  • Implementation of two new instanced raids

  • Major adjustments to medicine and food items

This is the one game I really wish had been good from the start as it's gamplay is really different from other mmos which is a good thing.

I'll definitely try it again when two hits.

Definitely with you on this one, if they don't just go with the flow and make it just like the rest but improve it while staying unique it may be worth another try. :)  I'm not super hyped about it but will patiently watch and wait.

Until I hear about real raids, and real end-game content. I just cant get excited about this game anymore. repetitive 8 man instanced raids just doesnt cut it for me. I need the "epic" feeling fights.

Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
    Now Playing: N/A
    Worst MMO: FFXIV
    Favorite MMO: FFXI

i really wanted this game to shine- heck i bought the CE. coming from western mmo's I found it  too confusing and  not PC friendly.  not a standard mmorpg mode.

so, if it aint broke- dont try n fix it, you cant reinvent the wheel.

with that said - they did say this was very different than western gameplay. so i guess ill pass. a good example who tried and complice is TERA.

As a long time 11 player / fan, and a long time 14 follower short time player.  I'm rather meh about 2.0 and everything leading up to it.

The game is becoming more and more a WoW - 11 hybrid, in many ways I don't see turning out well...

Things that made 11 great aren't being added into 14...  We loved our open world dungeons and our long term parties with friends where we would camp in different and interesting places throughout our leveling experience.

It seems like they are just stream lining this game all the way to dullsville.

I don't want them to add in instances, or raids, or things like that.   They need to take the things that made FFXI a sandboxy themepark and continue with many of those elements, not try something different that in reality, is more of the same.

Why do they keep throwing money into development? Just close it down. The P2P model is becoming outdated and the game is just subpar. Even this long after release and with so many patches, core features are still missing and there are still major design flaws. Even IF they manage to fix everything that's wrong with this game, it'll still be just-solid and will never have millions of subscribers. This game has been completely destroyed by reviews and users and with all the high quality MMOs on the horizon, it's a thing of the past. Is there anyone that really still cares about this game?

    Good grief, such oily questions.

I love FF14. Why? Because only this game could be so bad, that they made a UI made for gamepads, but was released on PC first. Sure, you can hook-up a gamepad to a PC, but 99% of PC MMO players use keyboard/mouse. I just dont understand why they wont just cut their losses and move on - this is one of those games where you should want people to forget it asap.

Do you mean that you liked camping in Aery for up to 3 hours a day every day? I don't know anyone else who did.

Personally, I liked both the Sky and Abyssea (not aby burns, aby bosses).

In Sky, you farmed a popset from elites that popped relatively quickly (couple of hours) and then used pairs of drops (from two elites) to pop one of the four gods. Each god, dropped a seal upon defeat and you could trade all four seals to pop the Mega Boss, Kirin.

In Abyssea, you farmed regular mobs for a pop item to pop an elite. You used a combination of various elite drops to pop a very strong boss. The advantage to this was you didn't have to wait a few hours for a boss to repop.

I liked both, particularly Abyssea, because you could play the game when your friends were online, rather than playing with people who you might not like as much, but were online at the right time.

I don't really want instancing, but I do want bosses that can be popped when I want them so  that I can play with the people I want.

I am totally with you on wanting exp party camps back. I want auto-translate back. I want subjobs back. ... I want FFXI back.

To the OP, for your next interview, would you ask them what lessons they learned from XI and what they thought XI's best features were?

XIV should have been XI 2.0.

Also, it saddens me to hear them mention PVP at all. I liked XI's detachment from real PVP.

Might be true for the WoWclone world, but a significant portion of the FFXI fanbase used a controller because the game simply worked better with it.

Mixed feelings on this one. Long time FFXI player and short time FFXIV player (also bought the CE), I was hoping for FFXI on steroids or something new and innovative.  What was received was an unfinished game with some new features that just didn't pan out. I was disappointed to the point that I felt for the first time that I had wasted my money on a Final Fantasy title. I will give them credit that the gathering and crafting system was very good, just difficult to sell any thing with the bazaar system at the time. I will give 2.0 a shot when it comes out but let's face the facts, the window for this game to become a success was missed. At the time of the initial release the market wasn't as saturated as it is now. Several games have passed them bye since. SWtOR innovated questing (yes, endgame is boring. Not arguing). Trion has shown that games can quickly be improved, new content added nearly monthly, and active time events can be highly entertaining through Rift. Aion is going F2P in the next month. DCUO is already there. Diablo III and GW2 are on the way and will hit before 2.0, also with no sub fee. As much as I love all things Final Fantasy since the early 90s, getting me to commit to FFXIV again will be a tough sell to even this fan. It will have to be something superior to the others in many facets to gain my patronage outside of a F2P model.

So two years after launch they're still not satisfied with their product? ... Wonder why they released it in the first place.

  • JudgeUKJudgeUK Member RarePosts: 1,703

You know, I really hope that they turn this around into one of the best loved games on the market.

I bought the original (shudder) even after giving them a beta review of many pages. And I determined then never to buy another Sqeenix game.

But somewhere along the way, after watching all their trials and tribulations, their open apologies, together with their determinaton to get it right, it's changed my feelings.

So best of luck with this guys. It's been a hard road, and obviously lots more to do. Come the 2.0 launch I'll give it a try again. You've deserved at least that much.

I actually enjoyed what little time I spent in beta (PS3 controller really helped), but the flaws were everywhere so I never made the jump to retail. I am tempted to do it even now, but being P2P and with the likes of GW2 and TSW going beta / releasing soon, or even something like WildStar in the more distant future, I can't help but feel it's too little too late.

I agree, and no I didn't like camping bosses, never said that, I like open world dungeons with grouping and the sandboxy feeling of being able to choose from a plethora of camps for my  party to group at.  Timed spawns suck.  I killed the dune widow 52 times, no joke, and it never, ever ever ever ever dropped the torque.   Yay.

I played XI for a long time. I was excited for XIV, but after trying it out for over a few months and back in when they released the many patches, I find myself with little energy left to wait for 2.0 to come out in another year. By the time they release something they think they got right there will be way too many other games out there I will be in to. Something huge and amazing will have to happen to drag me back to this title.

  • aslan132aslan132 Member UncommonPosts: 630

Too little too late. The only thing that could EVER get me to play this game is the words "free to play". There is no way I would pay for a game that was released in such an incomplete state, and expect people to just pick it up and "give it another shot" a year later. Never gonna happen.

I'm not even a fan of the series but it really is a shame what they did with FFXIV at launch. They really let their customers down and shot themselves in the foot. I hope they're able to recover for those that are fans of the series and are looking forward to giving the game another go.

    Such a shame though.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I wasn't trying try to be asinine, for the record. I really didn't know what you might have meant by open world dungeons. You could have meant Aery/Behemoth's Dominion or you could have meant Crawlers' Nest and Garlaige Citadel. It's clear now that you meant the latter. People say a phrase on this site and mean wildly different things.

Yeah, timed spawns are terrible. I had help camping my first long spawn NM, Mee Deggi, and we spent two days there getting two pairs and I vowed never to do that again and really didn't.

I like what WotG~ era did for soloing in the game (so that you could level even if you couldn't find a group) and level sync, and I liked what Abyssea did for the boss model, but they also made a lot of mistakes...like everything else about Abyssea lol.

The job system pretty much has me sold for retrying 2.0 I loved it in FFXI and I would like to ee something similar.

  • BrokenSpoonBrokenSpoon Member Posts: 205

    FFXIV 2.0 bring it!!

All hail the Barn Owl! oh.. and the RED SQUIRREL!!!

  • JayDee3JayDee3 Member Posts: 1

So many comments from people who don't play anymore or never played... Well I played at release and quit too. Why? Because it sucked.

..but I went back to the game a few patches back now and I'm really glad I did. The improvements are astounding. What Yoshi-P has done to this game is nothing short of incredible. There are problems still sure, don't get me wrong, there are things that drive me crazy but overall it's a lot of fun. By 2.0 if they get it right Yoshi-P probably going to pull off the biggest turn around in video game history.

To the people who say SE should give up and just make FFXI-2, they pretty much are it's called FFXIV. No, it's not exactaly the same but in a lot of ways it's better than XI.

  • AkaisAkais Member UncommonPosts: 274

I am a long time Square-Enix fan and jumped at the chance to Beta this game.

    I was horrified.

That said, I get more interested about the paths this game is taking under new leadership and it's apparent that Yoshi-P knows what he's doing.

I don't think that the audience will ever get above 200k players globally even with an agressive re-boot and the folks I know that play/played FFXI have no interest in migrating at all.

This is sad really as I think the changes implemented by 2.0 would have made it a strong hit had they been in place for the original launch... Even if that launch had been this year in contention with GW2's.

  • JudgeUKJudgeUK Member RarePosts: 1,703

Maybe the best thing they could do at 2.0 launch is to offer a free trial for a couple of weeks. This would give players, (ones that had walked away as well as people new to the game), the chance to see the end result of all their work.

And hopefully for SE, some of these would stay.

Let's face it, a lot of people got burnt with the original launch and may feel very reluctant to go back just to get burnt again. A no cost trial version would be a way of overcoming people's past reservations.

  • DraucantDraucant Member UncommonPosts: 34

I believe they are going to have a free trial before 2.0 goes retail for pc/ps3.  But the free trial is going to be the software version of 2.0.
