and i dont download torrents on my main computer but do it all on a secondary computer i dont care much about,

You could also install all your important programmes and put important files on a external drive and unplug it when you dont use them.

    Good luck with that buddy

charles was right, and anyone saying antivirus is needed or even should be used is clearly clueless, sure i have kaspersky installed because i get one for free from my bank account, not that i use it,

i been downloading what i wanted, browsing "porn" or whatnot and havent used antivirus for i dont know last 7+ years atleast

there are plenty of alternatives, proper browser, proper pluggins, being generally smart and so on

but if you really want one, kaspersky is best paid, microsoft offered stuff  (defender and essentials ) are probably best hassle free, free antiviruses

I had computer on my work infected by very very nasty spyware , that took our specialist team whole day to remove.

Because they forgot to install antivirus on my computer.

Why I am telling you that.

Because - quite obviously , its work computer , on safe network - and no torrents , porn , warez , whotever never came trough.

So even if you are running cleanest of PCs, you are still under risk.

    Antivirus is mandatory

    PS

Even if you just browsed MMORPG.com , you can get infected

2 years ago they had the site hacked, and everyone that visited that day got infected by keylogger.

I am sorry for people that didnt have firewall and antivirus :[

I suspect antivirus companies secretly create viruses just to keep themselves in business.

I use BitDefender which I really like and trust, and I just downloaded Malwarebytes (based on this thread).  So Cheers.

MSE (microsoft security essentials) , by far the best on the market currently, 99% of all people I know who used to use stuff like norton Avg panda avast and alike are now turned to the current MSE version, its light, fast, silent and catches everyting, virus ,loggers, trojans  no restictions.

  • drbaltazardrbaltazar Member UncommonPosts: 7,856

use the microsoft combo for security (they work together!yes you can boot some part but for max security i suggest you use all part ,her goes:

    mse,malicious software removal tool(included in w7),sweeper (beta,free)and internet explorer 9

for ie9 i will add a new feature ms have released!

    http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Browser/p3p/Default.html

with these you should be fairly secure.

optional:put third party cookie to ask!why?cause if you leave ie9(and probably any browser in default accept you ll see the tool

grc.com provide go red when tested ,you dont want issue ,so i suggest you set it to ask!(no more issue)

I switched from Norton to Avast. I don't miss Norton one bit. Avast does everyting I need and it's free.

Been working as an MCSE specialist for about 15 years now. and my recomendation is use an anti virus if you plan to ever have the computer connected to Internet.

I did a test a few years back on an old XP with SP1 directly connected to internet isolated from my network without firewall and antivirus on and on less then 2 weeks it had around 13.000 diffrent viruses and malicouse software on it.

So it´s utterly stupid not to use the safety that is on the market.

one thing for sure tough is you can never be 100% secure when using the internet.

Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes  together work fine for me, but then again I don't click on every link or downlowd everything I see.

MS Security Essentials is decent. AVG is good.

I use Vipre AV, good, small foot print, and inexpensive.

Every MMORPG is AWESOME, until it's released!

I think the key here is you had no firewall installed.

The first thing I do after a clean Windows install is installing a firewall. (Comodo)

I see no need for an antivirus program (not to be confused with an ani SPY ware program) but a firewall is a MUST.

I am a common sense advocate.

I don't run anything on my personal computers. Not even a firewall (as I use my router to provide that for me).

That being said, when I get asked by clients, I wholeheartedly recommend that they do run something. I realize that "common sense" does not have a standard definition, and that what I consider to be common, other people do not.

As far as a particular program, I don't really think any of them are that much better than any other. It changes year to year (and sometimes month to month) as to which one is rated "The Best" - it really comes down to how intrusive it is on your machine: how many annoying popups it has, if it can autoupdate silently, and if it seriously impacts your computer or not. I usually install AVG for virus, MSE for malware, and enable the Windows Firewall. Not because I think think these are the best, just because I'm familiar with them, they are free and easily available; I don't really endorse it. As long as your running something name brand, and you keep it updated, your going to be covered from most of the junk floating around out there.

It is true, that on a standard installation, that a box can get hit with viruses without any user interaction. XP was notorious for this. Win7 is a bit better, but without updates, is still vulnerable. A firewall of some sort will protect against these (and a router with NAT is as good as a firewall as far as that is concerned, so long as you aren't sitting on the DMZ or have ports forwarded to your machine). However, the vast number of viruses are from user interaction - somehow the attacker gets you to run a program and provide the vector for infection. UAC (the annoying popup window) protects against the vast majority of these; very few viruses are sophisticated enough to get around UAC, but a few do exist - these usually get patched by MS as essential updates, and sometimes get pushed as zero day updates outside of the routine Tuesday schedule, so keeping your PC updated usually prevents these attacks. I shake my head every time someone recommends disabling (or has disabled) UAC because they hate the annoying popup, although I can sympathize with it being annoying.

At work, we actually shifted to OS X, and run Windows virtualized for programs that still require Windows. OS X isn't really any more secure than Windows, it's just there aren't nearly as many viruses out there for it (same for Linux really), and knock on wood - in 3 years of this no one at my workplace has managed to infect OS X yet. And when they do infect Windows, I just delete the infected VM and give them a fresh copy.

I don't know if you read a few years back, Someone embeded a virus into a ubuntu theme.
Of course, no body thought linux had a real risk of getting a virus and as such, no software was properly developed to clean one.

I recommend Eset NOD32 or Microsoft Security Essentials paired with Malware Bytes.

Linux has had AV software for a very long time now: CLAM has been very popular, and there are even professional products such as AVG, Avast, and Kapersky. AV has been around for a long time, but mainly aimed at enterprise where Linux is used as a server or host OS.

Although what you are saying is true, most desktop users don't consider the risk, and there have been more than a handful of linux viruses that get out and about.

MSE & Malware Bytes are excellent free software that is more than adequate for most out there and runs great.

If you want a virus-free PC, you should get malware removal software and the best antivirus protection I recommend ZenOK Free Antivirus. it has been really good on my PC.

Everyone will have their own opinion on this.

I use AVG (Full version) coupled with Malwarebytes anti malware and can say that I havent been infected with any virus since I started using it......and i goto some dodgy websites!

AVG free is adequate for most people though, and as long as you run malwarebytes every few weeks then you should be fine
