Best: EVE Online - Great support and community. Very mature as well. Graphics are great and rping is evident. Choose between a race and distinct bloodline and full customization of your character.

Ever expanding universe also. Only problem is, it might be too complicated for some people. Takes time to get use to, and patience.

Requires strategy, and not time spent clicking necessarily, to become better.

Worst: World of Warcraft or Runescape - I've played them for some time now, and moved on. RS is a simple and fun game at first, but is very repetitive and has no storyline what so ever. No creativity was placed in combat, and theres not much of team play in the game as well. Bottom line is, the more you spend time clicking, the better you are. Not much skill involved.

WoW has more of a class system, but quests aren't very exciting. Similar to RS, but better interface and gfx.

BEST -- Id have to say my first MMORPG back in 98.  Everquestimage (pre SoL).  In second is DAoC

    DECENT GAMES -- SWG/FFXI

--Nyture, Arc Convoker of fironia vie server (EQ) --Retired--

-- Currently playing WoW while waiting for vanguard
    Explorer 66%
    Socializer 60%

Best:  SWG Pre Jedi/Pre Holocron Craze (anyone remember that debacle?) but for now as-is, EQ2, great graphics and great content pre 50 (only lvl 27, so can't speak for high end game yet).

Worst: MxO, my nine year old couldn't stand it, and that says a lot since he will play anything.

    Best:

    1) Asheron's Call 1 -- open, immersive world; unfathomably vast array of items and equipment; experience system where you spend the experience you earn on your skills/attributes, thereby giving YOU, the player, control of how you evolve and linking your actions directly to your development; involving world events that have actually changed the gameworld; deep lore. Now just bring the graphics into today and add a freakin' quest log.

    2) Everquest 1 -- open, expansive world, like AC1 where you can go wherever you want and LEARN by doing (instead of artificial barriers that shepherd you around and do everything to prevent you from learning by doing). Skills that you control the evolution of. Deep lore. World events that make sense within the game's lore. Still the one I fall back on when all others fail.

    Worst:

    1) WoW -- seems great for the first two weeks, then suddenly you realise: there's nothing there. The lore goes nowhere; questlines suddenly stop; NPC rhetoric never changes and is limited almost exclusively JUST to the specific quest information they have to offer. Big idiotic question marks, since people aren't smart enough to figure out that they need to speak to people to learn things. Brought the mindless L33tspeak that was a minor annoyance in other games to a whole new and nonstop level. Just the easiest thing released...

    2) GW -- ...until this. Instanced world. No immersive world to explore in the presence of the other thousands, since you don't exist in the same world outside cities. Scratch immersion. Insta-level for thos who want to PvP without work (aka "UT in a fantasy setting").

And special dishonorable mention goes to the most worthless sequel of all time, particularly because it came from one of the best of all time:

Asheron's Call 2. What the heck were they thinking? Buildings that no one can go into. Pathing for your character that means, for instance, that you can look down the slope, but unless you *just* happen to hit the right path, you'll have to "jump" that two foot drop -- and take damage for doing it! Damage, for jumping about 1/2 foot down. Took the great, open skill system and horked it into a quest tree with severel limits. Threw away the revolutionary combat system in AC1 in favor of the standard "click here" standard (no adjusting height of attack to match the weakness of your enemy, no power bar to adjust how much effort you're putting in). Just the most worthless thing to come down the pipe, and the only game, including WoW and GW, that I will celebrate the passing of. (and mourn what could have been, if they'd made the sequel to AC worthwhile)

    Best Shadowbane

    Worst Shadowbane

Its kinda like how some people love to cut their wrists. Shadowbane, pure MMO masochism.

  • spydermr2spydermr2 Member Posts: 336

Third category besides best and worst: games that "might" become something.

    1) WoW -- such an open gameworld and a smooth, intuitive interface is worth something. Fantastic lore potential. Now, if WoW would stop dumbing everything down and actually work on depth of world and depth of play... and stop thinking that a fishing tournament, Santa Claus, and Easter Eggs are "world events". The first is silly, something that should be organized by players with player-based rewards and should NOT represent a major effort on the dev's part. The last two don't even make sense within the context of the world of warcraft, and their presence goes far in revealing the thinking of the devs. Come on, guys, you've got such a tremendous potential here. Realise it.

    2) EQ2 -- sequel to the one of the best. Would have been one of the worst but for the changes they've been making since launch. Here's a clue, EQ2, and it goes to what other games know (including your own EQ1: open gameworld = beginnings of immersive play. Artificial limits = shepherding players around by the nose. Open up the gameworld. Lose the stupid combat lock and replace it with one that relies on the player evaluating the gameworld and playing based on what they learn/see. Simple: lock XP to the first person to tag the enemy. No kill-stealing then. Replace the artificial "grouping" of creatures with a "social aura" or "social diameter" (in pen-n-paper games, it's called zone-of-control) that defines the "awareness" of the creature. Overlap = potential to draw more than one opponent. Gone therefore would be the artificial grouping where you target one enemy and get three enemies who were well out of sight and sound suddenly come running in. You're going in the right direction, keep going, and keep opening up the gameworld to exploration, to players LEARNING from the environment and tailoring their play to what they learn instead of the limitations that have been and are in place.

    3) DAoC -- great premise, fantastic realm-versus-realm play. The definition of what large-scale PvP play should be (and what Battlegrounds in WoW is a pathetic, weak imitation of). Graphics are okay, interface is a bit clunky, items in inventory require a magnifying glass to make out. Just polish it... or bring out the fully modernized DAoC 2. (Lesson: Do NOT make the mistakes Turbine made when they put out AC2)

I agree with you tannayr about WoW the game is not for seasoned MMO fans not in the least. Me being a Hardcore Fan of MMO's would take lineage 2 over WoW.

  • LedronazLedronaz Member Posts: 30

On behalf of Guildwars I want to post this message. One: guildwars is not a typical mmo...so if your looking for level grind vast seemless enviroment with 100 of people all around you. Guildwars is not for you..okay its not Eq,WoW, or even lineage nor does it play like them. Please read about guildwars be it reviews or the games website read about this game first before you buy it that way you know before hand whether you like it or not. Trust me reading knowing before hand is better then wasting $50 and finding after playing it that its not what you thought. (Note: I am a Guildwars fan and EQ,Warcraft fan)

EVE Online: Maybe because it was my first MMORPG and I was so impressed how fun an online game could be. Game was just great. image

    WORST:

EQ2: Graphics, sounds and combat were nice, but I just hate the grind and the stupid zoning.

I haven't played many MMORPGS yet, so EQ2 isn't the worst game for sure. Though out of those games I have played yet, I like this one the least.

I'm not trying to throw a dig at you so please don't take this the wrong way but I just find this interesting.

And I'm not defending either game because i don't like either of them.

You mention zoning and the grind as your gripes for EQ2...yet your favorite MMO (EVE) forces you to spend an eternity warpgate jumping and waiting up to a month for your skills to train one at a time.

Just found that ironic is all heheh. Guess it's all how it's presented.

I find it interesting how people rate a good and bad MMO.  Actually, not a good and bad but "crap", etc.

    My favorite points to make:

Guild Wars is *not* a MMO.
WoW is, by far, not the worst MMO.
EQ 2 is, by far, not the worst MMO.

Someone stated they have been playing games since 1984 and then proceeded to say Guild Wars was the worst game ever?  I have played so many PC games it is just stupid.  If Guild Wars is the worst game every made in the PC industry, I *love* the gaming industry.  Wait, I love it anyway.  My point is, if that is the worst gaming could do then it isn't in bad shape at all.

    Nobody remembers:

    Waterworld (PC)
    E.T. (Atari 2600)
    Virtuoso (PC)
    Daikatana (PC)

Bah.. I could go on all day.

    RuneScape

When it first came out it was an extremely crappy 2D South Park looking game with only a few towns, but there were actually "classes" and you could PK anyone anywhere, and there was real military strategy and stuff back then.  This version was known as "RS Classic" had way too many autoers and macroers and crap, and they shut down the F2P version of it now.

Anyway, the new RuneScape rocks.  The version now is an massive 3D version of course. Way too many noobs claiming to be "hacked" though, which must mean they got keylogged or something, when in reality they just told someone their password like an idiot. Beggers everywhere, but can simply be removed of by putting them on your "ignore" list.   Variety of weapons and skills, and now the map is HUGE, it has stuff like minigames, like Castle Wars, a CTF type of game, tons and tons of quests, the game is constantly updated, and the P2P version is only 5 dollars a month.  In members worlds there aren't as many noobs, but there are still some.  There are WAY too many ch00bs though, I swear some of them are at least 6 years old.  Many scammers though, however, scamming is virtually impossible these days anyway just some noobs saying "Jagex blocks out your pass try saying it" or "free armor trimming".  Combat system is.. ok.  Also, its not a pain in the ass like all other MMO's where you have to go through these gay mirror downloads which take 6 hours and never work and are run by some crappy European company that force you to pay 20 bucks a month, and on RuneScape literally all you do is make a name and password. NOTHING else.  No Email, nothing.  And you literally just click on play game, and select high or low detail, and select a world, and play.  No downloads and nothing a pain in the ass.

I'm kind of dissapointed at the mmorpg's which came out in the early 2005 period. None of them really stood out as good to me. As you unique I mean. There were some decent ones though.

    Best: FFXI or EQ2
Worst: Lineage 2 (not because of the game, because of the community)

Schutzbar - Human Warrior - Windrunner Alliance - World of Warcraft
Nihilanth - Kerra Paladin - Blackburrow - EverQuest II
    XBL Gamertag - Eagle15GT

  • BigPeelerBigPeeler Member Posts: 1,270

Best - Lineage 1... Fun fun fun... I was addicted to this game for years. Good 2D graphics/effects, great music (after they dropped the single MIDI track that used to play EVERYWHERE back in the day), anti-carebear (more-or-less the same PvP system as L2), great community, first game to introduce siege warfar, and... simply fun...

Worst - RuneScape... I played this game for quite some time back when I was first really getting in to MMORPG's, and I look back now and wonder wtf I was thinking... This game is just SOOOO poorly made it's rediculous... The community is the worst EVER, the combat is weak, the graphics suck, the sound/music is just sad, PvP combat is rediculous, and the economy is a joke... Worst game ever~

[EDIT] I have a problem with two of the games that seem to be popular for bashing... Anybody who says either WoW or Lineage 2 as their "worst game" must not have played many games...

First with WoW... Now, I'm no WoW fan myself, but I know it sure as hell aint deserving of a "worst game"... The quality of the game itself is actually quite good, and beats out most of the games these people have as their "Best game"... Once again, I don't like WoW or Blizzard by any amount, but fact is, WoW is actually quite a well made game... You couldn't have played many games if you can call this the "worst game"...

Now on Lineage 2... The problem I'm having is that 99% of the people who still flame it, are doing so with their knowledge from the Open Beta, which I can say is NOTHING like the game in it's current state... A game can change a TON in 4 updates ("Chronicles", each one being HUGE) and numerous amounts of patches... The botting problem is pretty much non-existant, PK'ing is obscenely rare now, even in newb area's, the community is much more close-knit and friendly (especially comparing from an Open Beta to today), the grind is MUCH less noticable (especially in the lower levels), and... Well those were pretty much the only things people whined about, so with those fixed there really isn't much a reason to complain... Then there's the good things, like massive castle sieges and clan wars, awesome graphics and graphic style, great music (easily some of the best you'll find in an MMORPG), and much more... Once again, if you can call this the "Worst game" (especially in it's current state) then you really couldn't have played very many games...

  • Best: Guild Wars. There's enough said about it.

Worst: Planeshift. Average graphics, but the gameplay was killing. They REALLY should have found a interaction designer. It was utter crap to navigate and play the elements of the game. It was free though... yet not an excuse to make a bad considered GUI and gameplay.

I played L2 in beta and in release for about 2 months. first impressions are always the most important, and my first impressions were horrible. I'm glad they've made improvements, the game needed some serious help. But no matter what they do they won't ever get my money again.

as for not playing very many games i beg to differ. there were just so many things wrong with L2 when i played it and that's why it gets my vote for worst. Economy, community, terrible character customization and lack of content to name a few issues.

here's a quick breakdown of the games ive played ranging from at least 3 months to 3 years over the past 9 years:

EQ1 & 2, DAoC, AC1 & 2, CoH, EVE, FFXI, HZ, L2, SB, SWG, WoW, RoE, PS and AO.
