I would i buy all in steam, and i prefer it to have it digitally its safer.
That doesnt even make any sense. I've yet to see an MMO that doesnt allow you to download the client once you have set up your account with your CD-Key.
Also, you still have to long into the game through ANET's log in so its no more safe. If they get your GW2 account info they can just log into your account and change it or log into any other GW2 client.
With so many games (and options) out these days, for me, if a Game is not on Steam, I just don't buy it at all.. If someone else buys me a game from elsewere (like for a bday or some such) thats fine and I'll play it, but for me to spend my own money on a game, it got to be through steam or not at all..
Nowhere did I claim it would be easy, I know better.
But saying that, when has anything worthwhile ever been easy? The way they're pitching this now, especially with their latest blog entry, is that it's a game for everyone - not just the MMO elite.
Nothing says that more than marketing it in the same way that, say, Bethesda would with a new Elder Scrolls game. Having the game at a variety of distributors speaks volumes of the sort of people you want buying your game. If you hide your game away on your own personal store, or you limit the places of purchase, then that gives a very bad public impression (solely in my opinion).
Even though it isn't easy, I think it would damage them more not to try, in the long run.
I would like to say that the game will be on Steam, but it's very uncertain at this point, and Anet as far as I know has said nothing on the matter. I can almost assure anyone that it won't be available for preorder, Anet wants you to preorder from them so they can get the full cut. So far the game hasn't been added to the Steam games registry as far as I can tell. GW1 is on Steam, however Steams rules were different regarding DLC's and expansions back then, so NCSoft may not put up there. If it does, like I said I don't think it will be preorder and maybe not even day 1. Just a hunch though, no one has said anything official.
I don't understand the logic behind preferring Steam to physically owning the game. The only positive that I could come up with would be the convenience of never having to leave home to actually purchase it. There's practically nothing else, aside from maybe cloud gaming.
At any point in time Steam could just up and call it quits, and, since none of you actually own the game, there goes your entire collection down the drain. Of course, that's a worst case scenario that will probably never happen in the foreseeable future, but the threat does exist.
There's nothing safer about cloud services. They are a convenience, nothing more; that is, unless you're incapable of keeping up with / protecting a physical disk.
And no, I'm not hatemongering - I actually have a few games on steam, just because of how convenient it is. I've no problem with GW2 going on Steam; in fact, it'd probably boost their sales.
I, however, won't buy an MMO off Steam. Just a personal preference: I don't like having to use Steam unless absolutely necessary.
As long as it has no negative impact on anything, like, pricing, availabilty (regarding when you can buy it aswell as when you want to play) etc, i don't care where it's available. The problem comes with a too tight integration to services, like when Steam tells you "game not available", or enforces the "first time installation" every time you launch the game.
I prefer my Guild Wars 2 as "clean" as possible, meaning no Steam, Origin or whatever, and no NCSoft Launcher for certain.

It might be that some people don't have Wal-Mart or Best Buy across the street.
If you want to, you can always find a small retailer. Unless you really live far off any reasonable city..
And there still is Amazon etc.

Wouldn't be surprised if this shows up on Steam given the fact all the other Guild Wars stuff is already there. While I'm an avid Steam user, I must have that Rytlock statue in the CE, so even if it does appear on Steam I'll be going with the boxed version this time around!

I have around 300 games total lol, how would I organize those games if I didn't have Steam? This wasn't a thread about the pros and cons of Steam, however since you made it so, Steam offers a lot more than just 'cloud' gaming. It's almost nothing to do with that and tbh, I have never even used that feature of Steam. Steam gives me an instant community for any game I own. It gives me easy access to an insane amount of games, and extremely easy access to play those games with my friends. It, like I said, organizes all my games together nicely. On top of this, they offer excellent deals (however Amazon and some others have been offering slightly better deals lately!). I have not paid full price for a game, besides Skyrim, in quite a long time. It automatically updates my games, which can sometimes be annoying, but on the whole I find the auto-update pretty nice.
Technically speaking, no one owns any game. If you read the EULA for any game it will state that you do not own the data, only the physcal medium. The only thing that suck about Steam is that if they decide you have broken the EULA agreement, the can cut you off from your games immediately. Stopping someone from using a physical copy is a lot harder obviously and not going to happen.

I'm far, far, far more likely to lose every single one of my discs (especially when considering disasters like flooding) than for Valve to go out of business. It's considerably safer. When you buy digitally, you own the game exactly as much as you would if you own a "physical" copy. Nearly every single game must be activated online today. The thought that you have any more ownership over something because its in your hand is an illusion.
The convenience has nothing to do with going to the store. If I get a new computer or decide to reinstall at a later date for any reason, my entire library is there waiting for me. Do you know how many games I own? Do you realize how much physical space discs for each of them would take up? Do you know how annoying it would be to dig up a game I bought years ago when I feel like playing it today?
It's an extreme convenience, but it's also safer because you can't lose your games.

I think it's best to digitally prepurchase it directly from the GW site if you want a digital copy. Going through steam would mean A-net would miss out on 20-30% of the sale value. So if you really want to support A-net you should buy it from them directly.

Yeah, it would take nuclear catastrophe to lose your content you bought on steam. For instance I bought a few things from Direct2Drive a while back (years ago) and just recetnly got a notice that my licenses (and ability to redownload) have been transferred to gamefly. If steam for some reason bet their money on red in Vegas and lost, somebody would pick up their assets and you would still own the license.

its very cool, but I just cant spend the money on it.. not with D3 to buy around the same time.. /sigh.. gotta stretch the game cash!
I think it will be on steam, but probably not from launch. anet are earning more money if you buy it from them directly, but in the long run having it on steam will give them more buyers.
I would actually prefer if I could pre-order GW2 from Steam, but I am not going to wait past a reasonable timeframe to be able to play on the first beta weekend, unless I manage to hold myself until official release to start the honeymoon period.
I allways try and purchase my games at the Developers webstore, as this makes sure that all the money goes where it belongs, the developers... and not a 3rd party named steam. There is absolutely no reason not to buy the game at Arenanets own webshop

I would really appreciate it on Steam because 99% of all my games are there.
Steam is just a high quality service.
And to a previous poster....if Steam goes out of business you're going to have bigger problems than playing video games. If a company as succesful as Steam goes under in the next 10 years then we all have bigger problems than where to hold our discs.

This is something that I just can't agree with.
Yes steam has nice sales and all that(which steams the love they get somehow), and I've had steam since I played counter strike, and I played that for some 7 years after launch.
However I just don't feel like they do right by their customers.
Stuff like no support for where I want to install my specific steam games, the fact that I can't return a game thro steam if it doesn't work properly like i can with other products, and the fact that steam has got so much weight in the gaming industry right now and they seem not to want to do anything to publishers to make games better just boggles my mind.
Maybe some people want to install their games in weird places, but most are content with them all in one place. I just have Steam installed on a drive dedicated to games.
You can't return a digital game. That doesn't make any sense.
If you aren't aware of how Valve is trying hard to improve the industry then you've never heard of Gabe Newell. This is the guy who has games localized in areas where piracy is so heavy that other publishers have given up. He knows that if you provide good service, people will want to buy your products, and it shows. His next project is rumored to be a console that will bridge the gap between other consoles and PC, drastically improving the quality of console ports. This is a guy who cares about the industry.

Well GW1 is on Steam, so I would say there is a decent chance GW2 will be as well.

Don't care. Won't buy it off steam anyway.
I have cheaper sources of new legal games.
Besides don't like this 'bind to account' thing.
Using Steam only if there is huge like 80% + sale.
