What are you looking forward to most about GW2?

TheDarkrayneTheDarkrayne Member EpicPosts: 5,297

This poll has been created almost entirely from the features listed in the following post:

http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/337506/Guild-Wars-2-Mass-info-for-the-uninitiated.html

See that post for full explanations on them all.

I'm majorly excited about GW2 but I do think there are things about it that I do not like; switching weapons a lot isn't something I think I will enjoy, for example.

I'd like to see why everyone is so hyped for this game. I've included an option for those that arn't looking forward to GW2 (It's the last one).

For me, it's the level scaling, keeping all content viable is an extremely good move in my eyes.. the whole game is potentially the endgame. Hard Mode in GW1 was very effective. Feel free to comment about your own, the poll only gives you 10 option slots.

What do you think?

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I'll be honest here...It isn't really fair to make us choose one feature when it is the aggregate of all these features that makes GW2 so awesome (in my eyes).

Each of those features are pretty good, and would probably be able to sell a game all on its own, but GW2 is special because most of these are designed with something in mind that just can't happen in other MMOs...The focus on just being able to play with other people without penalties makes this game so special.

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

I completely understand where you are coming from and agree with you. I just thought it would be interesting to see which of those features is the most desired, at least in this community.

People finally realizing its just another MMO and not the best thing since sliced bread? (Just like EVERY major MMO release in the past seven years.)

    Dynamic content

    no Holy Trinity

    WvW pvp

I actually think this is a viable point to make. Some may even say it trollish, but I don't. It's been proven time and time again that we can be let down due to the hype of these games. I 'hope' it doesn't happen again, but I'll be one of the first to admit it if it does.

It's all about managing expectations. I've never been really disappointed by an mmo because I've known what to expect in each of them.

It's pretty much an "all of the above" for the good stuff. It all meshes together and needs to be together to work as a whole.

Killing crap with a like minded guild.

I mean everything. Other players, other servers, centaurs raiding a town, giant dragons. Everything.

I'm hoping the combat is as addicting as it is in my mind*.

    *I know that's a dangerous statement.

All in all what I want most is for the team work that's been shown to actually be a part of the game. That's why I'm addicted to League of Legends over most other games. Teamwork is fun and it always has a benefit even if the task at hand goes afoul.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Same. That will be a good day.

    But feature wise: WvWvW.

Even if I don't like the concept of level scaling so much and the fact that world pvp is restricted to a place outside of the general gameworld; it's very typically themeparkish to make a fenced off, dedicated "ride" out of it.

    Though on paper it's very fun content and an interesting new concept to pitch three servers against eachother. It's ultimate succes is very dependent on a few factors though;

    - Will it start to feel repetitive after a few weeks of Mist heavy gaming? (i.e. Just like a big battleground such as Alterac Valley which also happened to have secondary, small group and solo objectives)

    - Will the lack of substantial death penalties make dying such a non-consequential breeze that you don't care about dying anymore? (Experienced this in WAR and Swtor very much and took away much of the excitement of world pvp).

    - Will the tech support massive encounters without too much lag?

    - Will it favor zerging too much?

    - Will the cash-shop stay away from "pay-to-help-my-server-win" deals? (siege engine upgrades / group buffs, etc)

Curious how this will pan out and whether they will allow people to fully test it in an open beta before launch.

Exploration, why didn't you put an "other" option in there?

  • Dream_ChaserDream_Chaser Member Posts: 1,043

Poll doesn't really cover me so much.

Charr, Black Citadel, Engineers, and so on.

This is mostly because the Charr are something completely new. An intelligent, militaristic beast race that live in a fantasy take on the death star. It's crazy stuff, really out there, and reinvigorating to me. I'm sick of fantasy being tied down by people with no imagination who believe that all fantasy can be is an oversexualised elf with beach-ball sized tits, prancing through fields and forests, and shooting things from a mile away with an enchanted bow.

Fantasy basically means 'anything you can imagine,' and the Charr embody that to a tee. I long to play the likes of them, just to get out of the undeniably stagnant standards of the fantasy setting. The waters have become foul, and even more so with generic mush like Amalur, rotting the minds of people, and taking us back to Tolkien. There are thousands of books out there that show us just what can be done with fantasy, so why are other entertainment mediums so far behind?

Originally I was worried that people would be alienated by this, that it would flare up their xenophobia. Some were, but they were pretty much invariably rabid GW1 fans who couldn't get over their Ascalon fetish. (And you know how those bloody Ascalonians are with their genocidal blood rages against anything that isn't Ascalonian, and some fans are just too obsessively like the things they're fans of.) But aside from those people, who were a vocal minority, the rest of the Internet tends to see the Charr as really badass. And this makes me happy.

But yeah... the other races, whilst slightly different, still come too close to fantasy stereotypes for me. But there's obviously no stereotype which fits the Charr. This is why ArenaNet are so obsessed with them, and why we're getting a Rytlock figurine in the collector's edition (yay!!!).

    Player Equality

Can we have exclusive content (raids)? No.

Can we have exclusive gear and mounts? No.

Can we have professions that are needed for groups? No.

Everything from how dynamic events are designed to measure player participation, to how all resource nodes are instanced to the player, rather than globally so, shows that ArenaNet have really put player equality at the forefront of design. In past MMOs, I've been kind of pissed that a friend has been able to get a quest chain that I haven't and it's thrown us out, or that we have to carefully take it in turns gathering things, or that we have to roll on the same loot.

Guild Wars 2 has none of these problems. It removes player competition and reinforces cameraderie. It's going to piss off misanthropic people who'll call it a carebear game. But y'know what? Don't care.

Like I've said, one of the things I'm looking forward to is organising/meeting up with gathering parties. People who're following along the same route to gather stuff. I mean, I remember in WoW if someone found a great place to harvest nodes for something, they wouldn't tell you where it was, because they were afraid that you'd steal all their precious nodes. In GW2 that can't happen.

There's no mob-stealing in GW2, there's no open-world PvP in GW2 (so you won't accidentally attack someone with a mis-click because they keep jumping in front of you, get flagged for PvP, and then get jumped by a group of 10 arseholes), there's no stuff that you can spend risk your life (spending 24 hours a day, many days a week) grinding for, so you gain a massive advantage over other people (cosmetics are fine, that's not). And this is all great.

I mean, if they do it right... it's going to be a lot of stress free, guilty free fun. You're just going to be able to have a blast instead of constantly having to worry about things, or without having to be incredibly paranoid about everyone you see. It is going to take some people some time to adjust, but when they do...

Well, if ArenaNet does this right, then it's going to be my ideal game.

    Exploration, exploration, exploration!

The adventure option partially covers this, but not quite.

The motto here is: Screw scouts!

I kind of want to just strike out into the world, and walk in a direction until something happens. That's how it should be in a good game, that's how some of the best RPGs have behaved, because they present a living world. I don't want to have to go to Mr. Shout Pole, listen to him ramble on, take notes, do his laundry for him, gather his groceries, and then turn these things in to Mrs. Surprise Noodle. I really hate that. I just want to get out there and have fun.

See, my Charr is (probably are) going to be with The Vigil, and The Vigil are essentially the police forces of Tyria. And I'm going to be patrolling. I'm going to be wandering the roads, I'm going to sometimes wander off the roads just to sate my curiosity. I'm going to find interesting things, and I'm going to boldly go where no Charr has gone before just for the shits and giggles of it.

So many games in the past have gated content and told you that you can't go here, or you can't do this, or whatever... and it's boring. WoW has absolutely no reason to explore. TOR only has those datacron things, which are just randomly jammed into the evironment most of the time, shining brightly like a beacon, and don't require much exploring to actually grab.

I remember how much fun exploring was in games like Ultima VII. I want to see something recapture that.

Quite possibly the best post I've read on the internet for years. I totally agree. You pretty much summed up my own feelings towards GW2.

    You forgot structured PvP.

I'm most looking forward to the social gameplay that comes from the lack of quests, but as events are the primary component of this, I voted for Dynamic Content.

W v W v W PvP, anything else is largely irrelevant, as the main focus of this game is the PvP, dynamic content, relatively unimportant, as long as there is some method of getting quests, whether its talking to an npc or being in the right place at the right time, doesnt matter. Holy trinity, probably would mean more if it was about dungeon raids, but in PvP, its more about working together, or not, to take down the opposition, and players don't behave like ai mobs so the trinity wouldnt work so well - except to get the healer killed first image  in PvP its more important to use CC than healing anyway, being able to stun your opponent and take them down before they can act, after all its all about kill ratio's, ideally to kill more people more often than you get killed yourself, im not brilliant at PvP, but i do regard a 3:1 ratio as being a good one.. for me anyway image

I'm *hoping* to look forward to people being happy and enjoying each other's company because they have finally found a game they want to play for a good while. For general chat to not be clogged 24/7 with such drivel as "X MMO still owns Y MMO, Z MMO sucks" For MMORPGs to get back to what they're supposed to be about: community and gaming with one another for great times. For peace, prosperity, and comfortable chairs.

Maybe it doesn't matter to you if you only care about PvP, but do not discount the importance of having events over quests. I could write several articles on why quests are detrimental to social gameplay. Do not get me started.

Looks like the majority voted World v World and who could blame you all, since from the gameplay videos it looks to be more fun than the typical endgame instanced PvP gear grind, most games adopt. Also, it actually works. image

There are definitely issues with it like: excessive particle effects, 5-10min door raid bosses and keep/tower walls going invisible. However these aren't gamebreaking ArenaNet are aware of these issues and hopefully they'll fix them before launch.

Exploration/Adventuring.. same thing really isn't it? Either way, that's what I meant. Exploring, free-roam, finding things, seeing things etc.

I mentioned in the post that there are only 10 slots.. I could have filled 30 easily. I know it forces you into a box without an other option but people comment on that anyway.

I'm only saying 'this is what I think are the main features narrowed down to 9, which of those is your fav?'. If i could change it now i'd take out the underwater combat option and have an other one instead. It's not serious, just a bit of fun... this poll isn't going to be used for anything.

I'm mostly looking forward to WvWvW.  As a primarily lone wolf player, I'm not sure how that is going to work out (although small groups can harass larger ones according to the recent MMORPG.com dev interview) but if it doesn't work out so well, there's plenty of other fun things to 'settle for'.

Agree with Dream_Chaser as I have been a lot lately, BUT all in all I think the poll is too big... there are at least 3 things on that poll I want equally and about 3 things NOT on that list I want eaqually >.<

oh and @Dream... I don't know if you saw any of my older posts before the press beta but I was really against the Charr with thier old styling but with the new model holy hell I think I might actually end up a charr! My other choices are Asura or Sylvari but I need to see their final states and get to play with char creation before I truely decide.
