GW2s Success Might Mean its Own Downfall... for the Oldschool Gamer

//\//\oo//\//\oo Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 2,767

In a nutshell: Great game with low cost => f2p crowd => unbearably awful community

I love PvP games. Well, I used to. I used to play LoL, FPS games and other competitive games online that are now basically unplayable solo.

The PvP community nowadays is so incredibly hostile and agitating that I find it impossible to play outside of a group of friends i.e. solo.

I played D2 HC, AO etc. with PvP objectives in mind and enjoyed myself the whole time; even the griefers back then seemed courteous compared to the average MOBA player you'll encounter today.

Nobody is interested in having fun anymor. It's only about winning and the way to victory is never as important as the outcome itself to this new generation of PvPers.

GW2 will be primarily about PvP, since, as with GW1, that was the primary focus of its end game. To play through great leveling content and converge to something as hostile as LoL is sort of a mixed bag and begs the question if GW2 really has a cost advantage for players like myself.

Some of the competitive online f2p games, e.g. LoL, are so bad, that even seasoned people like myself can't bear 30 minutes of it. Maybe I'm just getting old and I don't have the patience anymore to deal with teenagers. Am I the only one who has noticed the shift in attitudes, or has my skin merely worn?

Game still costs 60 bucks, so its not F2P where people can be complete dirtbags get banned then make a new account for no cost.

Also its not that difficult to join a guild and then the horrors of pubing cease to exist.

If I base it off here, very poor, but if I left it 3 months for the brainwashed glow to fade from their eyes probably OK.

what makes me sad here is the Mediocre part and comparing that to WoW :( WoW's community is horrible.. Blizzard allows and in most cases encourages harassment of others. I hope that Anet will have a harsh view of this to keep those people out or at bay.. maybe smack them on the nose a few times. This was my main concern over their announcement to have official forums but then after reading what they had to say I have hope. If they keep it in check on the forums or at least imply that they will... then there is hope in game.

One thing to remember however.. there is no competition with your server.. no open world PVP, no damage meters, no raid tracking... that alone will cut much of the nastiness out. Also no loot drama....

as to the poll I relly don't know how to answer.. I have my hopes and my doubts.

GAH! why do ppl think this is a PVP based game.. there is more to do PVE than PVP.

^This, and also please take a look at some of the Guild Wars pvp communities.

Played Guild Wars since 6 months after release and I contributed to both the pve and pvp community. I must say the pvp community is something quite disturbing. I doubt it will change any in GW2.

Honestly, after playing the first game, I think the community is going to be a good one. Keep in mind the alternative (think WoW, or TOR), in which general chat is spammed by all sorts of annoying nonsense.

I've found in GW that players are not only more helpful than in most other games, they are also more open to newer players. The caviate i've found is that they are also less willing to put up w/ people who act like idiots, or troll. This is where I think most of the community's criticism comes from.

To provide a contrast, in GW1 I (most of the time) found groups that were willing to accomodate different builds, try new things, and try to work w/ players they had (provided they were good) instead of holding out for that one perfect build found on wiki. In TOR for example, I found players who would refuse to take me or my friends into group because we were 1 piece shy of that 'optimal build' that they wanted. Even if the content was retardedly simple, and we had proof that we've already completed it countless times before.

This won't be the same experience for everyone, but I do (to this day) find that GW has a much better community than most other AAA MMOs on the market. There are some that were better, but not many.

I voted for mediocre because I do believe it'll be WoW like (at least how WoW was when I stopped playing somewhere during WotLK), as in, you'll be able to find some nice people, some nasty people, some easygoing people, some elitists and everything in between. One advantage is that if the friends list is being account wide (meaning, you friend someone and automatically friend all of his chars), I hope the ignore list will be as well.

BTW, I wouldn't say that the F2P automatically means bad community. I honestly have to say that for the little while I played RoM, I was very pleasantly surprised by its how friendly the community was.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

Granted I do agree with what someone said in another post that there is a lot to do in GW2 with regards to Pve, but PVP was the huge centerpiece of GW1 and i bet will be with GW2. I've pvped enough in GW1 to say that the pvping player base was pretty awful. From what I heard about LoL, i can safely say gw is or was nowhere near that bad.

PvP breeds competition and competition breeds assholes, its that simple. All you can really do is tolerate or /report.

In GW1 and its hayday pve wasn't that bad with respect towards the playerbase, you're always going to run into an asshole though just like how you'll eventually run into an asshole on the street.

To the OP, I wouldn't say your just a cranky old man. It would be ignorant to not say that GW2 is going to attract some kids and annoying kids at that.

What would make you a cranky old man is if you're so concerned with the playerbase consisting of artarded aholes that you actively protest them to GTFO. All you really can do is tolerant, /report, /ignore, /leave.

Do you know what the community was like in GW1? You're not r6+ so I am not talking to you.

Also if you're playing competitive games like LoL, SCII (you're only a diamond scrub, so your opinion doesn't matter), GW1 (you're not r6, your guild is in top 2000. You are pathetic.) you are bound to get a lot of people who only care about winning. It's natural. People love winning.

... Did I mention any of the titles you did before WoW as having bad communities?

LoLs community is so much worse than WoWs. I merely chose WoW as a sort of average. It doesn't mean that I think it's good, but that the current state of PvP is so poor that WoW sis no longer the worst.

I have never seen anything like that in GW1.. the worst was mentioned elsewhere in this thread.. the bashing in JQ and such.

While we can't judge game communities by what we see on forums, it has to be said in large part GW2's forum activity thus far has been no different than what we've seen for past releases. Making me believe it's still going to attract the same players as always, I've never been one to blame DEVs for player behavior in mass, as player behavior shows no difference to human behavior in general. You have some nice people, some who are in between, and others who are complete asshats. Game mechanics can't and won't change that.

Voted Mediocre (but not based on WOW, just modern communities in general).

     That's the truth!

There is NO game genre with a worse community than the MOBA genre.  BUT, I don't think the bad community is so much due to the people involved, it is due to the rules of the game.  If you play poorly in a MOBA game, you literally lose the game for your team and make it so your team members will PERSONALLY get killed over and over by fed champs.  Many players just can't deal with this in a mature way and act like pricks.

It makes me wonder if GW2's competitive PvP will spawn a similar community...it does have a lot in common with MOBA games.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

I'm not sure why you felt the need to try and insult me... or why you even mentioned NWN as an MMO; that's quite a stretch by itself.

Well, no hard feelings, but people like you are exactly why I'm afraid for GW2s community. I'll be putting you on ignore, so don't bother replying to me personally, please.

I didnt expect you to understand why I listed the games I did, you showed a complete lack of even wanting to see beyond your experience in your original post which was based solely on a desire to try to make it sound as if paybase washes a community clean.

As for your not thinking NWNO was an MMORPG...that fits in with what your post sounds like along with your placing people on ignore when they dont agree with you. very small minded and shows any community you would be a part of would be a bad one, I hope you dont play GW2, dont need you disrupting chat channels with telling people you are going to ignore them for disagreeing.
