Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online: In Development, Just Not as an MMO

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

THQ has been hit with massive layoffs and has announced that Warhammer 40k: Dark Millenium is no longer in development as an MMO. A few months ago, Kevin Dent sent out a message on his Twitter account indicating that W40K:DM was essentially dead in the water only to be countered by THQ denying any such thing. It appears that Dent was right after this story hit Yahoo Finance.

“As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features,” said Brian Farrell, President and CEO of THQ Inc. “Because we believe strongly in the high-quality and vast creative work that is in production, this is the right decision for both our portfolio and for gamers devoted to this powerful property.”

    'Robust Digital Content'

Another DLC- fest in the works. God help us all. Of course he would say it was 'good for our portfolio'. image

    Shame for the layoffs :(

Glad this will not be a mmo because everyone great ip does not need to be a mmo, not to mention the mmo market is saturated with craptastic stuff right now. We don't need yet another mmo failure. I'll be happy to play this as a good multiplayer rpg/shooter  instead.

Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!

Well, I can't say what I want to say about this without getting infracted, so...

*insert sounds of copious swearing and noises of unimaginable rage, followed by furniture being overturned and thrown*

*flips off THQ and leaves the thread*

I wouldn't be surprised if they lose the license now.  There are already many 40K games that aren't MMOs.  I'm sure Games Workshop would have liked an MMO out there.

The next announcement will be that it is being developed for XBox.

Big warhammer/40k/GW fan here. This news is sad, however I wasn't really sure 40k could work as an MMO to begin with. The idea of being a space marine running around doing "quests" doesnt seem to fit with the i.p. 40k is action focused. I couldn't help but feel this MMO would be like most recent ones: A glorified lobby room game where you que for instances to do pve or pvp while standing in a city looking at the Ah.

    - Dawn of War has the strategy covered.

-Space Marine had the solo level based gameplay of 40k covered. It also covered the online pvp space abit.

I think 40k only really lacks a bigger, more in-depth multiplayer experience & maybe some more solo content where you dont have to play as a space marine but can play as another army from the table-top game. It doesn't need auction houses, player housing, quests or most of the stuff mmo's have, it just needs lots of action with a load of character customization options + online play.

Suits Warhammer title just fine if it will be a scenario based "lobby game" - if this thing really gets done and it will have various content branches, community tools and longevity potential, I'm not sure if it's bad news at all. Space Marine would have been awesome online title with just bigger scenarios, more ways to play, vehicles and community tools. I'm not sure if it was a good idea to begin with trying to create a full blown mmorpg around this idea, as a lobby game they have a lot easier time to polish and focus on content.

They were driving down that old themepark road anyways. Glad they decided to turn around early, because the way they were headed is a dead end. I wish other developers had the same common sense. Gamers are looking for a different style of MMO. This two faction themepark crap has got to go.

Thank god. It seems that every IP which is released as an MMO turns into shit. I'd much rather the game stay an RTS.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

Good luck to the devs who lost their jobs. I think Gaunt's Ghosts could be an interesting starting point for a WH40K mmorpg?

today is a sad day- i was looking forward to a warhammer mmo, a dlc for space marine would be good i suppose- itll hit as a sequel prob.

    a bit dissapointed- actually ALOT!

long live warhammer online! & wrath....

ah what a shame, was looking forward to this too.

  • CembryeCembrye Member UncommonPosts: 65

I am actually glad about the news.  Early indications were that it was being rushed forward with a lot of slapped together imitations of existing game systems.   The biggest disappointment was that the multi-faction Warhammer 40 K universe was being shoe-horned into two factions.  I would rather this go under than see yet another great IP turned into dung in the rush for quick returns.

Forget the mmo bring in another rts. they could have done so much more with an rts background but keep leaning toward fps or mmo i know that the revenue is probably higher for those types of games but i would really just rather see a well made rts like the first dawn of war or something were you could build units on a grand scale because isnt that what warhammer is all about the huge massive battles where you got over 4 races duking it out for power. I want that type of game not another mmo where you grind all day and craft stuff the market is already overstaturated with those games form f2p to p2p i would just enjoy a real rts game with such a deep background story like warhammer.

I will admit to being relieved.  As others above said, they were going the themepark, two-faction, and very probably PvE-heavy route, which is totally inappropriate for the WH40k universe.

I still think an MMO would be viable in the WH40k world, but it would absolutely have to be multi-faction, PvP-centric, action-oriented, and built around coherent missions rather than the trite, overdone "kill X monsters and collect Y parts and deliver them to questgiver Z" approach.

Not surprised tough I feel sorry for all disappointed fans... Personally, I don't think it would've done well anyway though. In my personal opinion, WH40K is ill suited for a traditional MMO and would flourish better in a Planetside like enviorment; that is as a FPS or TPS pitting sides against eachother for territorial control over vast battlefields.

I doesn't matter though I guess, since with this being cancelled we probably won't see another 40k MMO again.... At least not in a long Long while.

Good - it was going the way of WoW and SWTOR.

It's a pity to waste such an excellent opportunity on an old gaming model.

  • ShmawShmaw Member Posts: 85

I am also a massive fan of warhammer and warhammer 40k, and while I think that 40k would make for an amazing MMO, I do not think there is a company out there that has the time or money to make it happen.  After seeing some early vids of the gameplay, I am pretty glad they never shipped.

  • ZyllosZyllos Member UncommonPosts: 537

This is no surprise. As soon as they announced two faction play, it was already over.

MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

Either Necromunda or Gorkamorka would make a better MMO, they are both basically gang warfare. The lore isnt rigid either so people could run around with unique chars that wouldnt look out of place.

    Currently playing:

EVE online (Ruining low sec one hotdrop at a time)

    Gravity Rush,
    Dishonoured: The Knife of Dunwall.

    (Waiting for) Metro: Last Light,
    Company of Heroes II.

    This is good news.

Buy to play, hopefully no cash shop, private servers, maybe LAN, better graphics, no kill ten rats.

You don't know, maybe they create big MP matches with 64 players. You don't need to pay a subscription fee to repeat the same dungeon or battleground. They could try to make it peer to peer. And open world zergs suck anyway.
