Well guys, I have finally found an MMORPG that really has me hooked. And I don't mean the "need to get this done hooked" that I felt in most other MMORPG's.. I mean the one where I just want to log into the world of DAoC and do anything.
Currently have a 33 Warrior on Mid/Gareth. I got the catacombs expansion (this is a must) and the things it brings to the game make it so great. The graphics are just as good as other leading MMO's that have people going crazy over high setting eye-candy.
There is just.. so much to do! There are LOTS of quests.. but thankfully it isn't the main way of leveling like in WoW so you don't have your levelling ran by your quest log (I hated that). Mainly do quests to get nice items that can save you some money at your level.
This game has a great group system.. and is fairly soloable for the less sociable type. Each of the three realms is the size of an entire other MMORPG, and these are all unique it makes it almost like there are three games. There are many gorgeous PvE zones that you can explore and have fun in with your friends.. I just love it.
And the PvP. Just takes the cake. I now laugh at WoW's feeble attempt at copying this game. I could go on for quite awhile about WoW and where DAoC surpasses it. The PvP is fun, exciting, and requires leadership and tactics. Not just the pathetic zerg fest we see in WoW.
I could also go on about how much I love the game and why, but that'll get boring. Try downloading the trial and picking up Catacombs for 20 bucks. The only thing I can see someone getting discouraged at from a first impression is that it seems a little more slower pace than other MMO's (never heard this bother anyone but me.. and I admit it isn't even that bad. Just a few levels of slow running). No need to worry here.. as you level further building your character, and grouping with other classes you'll find there are many speed boosts and endurance improvements.
I find that most of the people that DON'T like this game have played it already for several years and have by now gotten sick of it, probably has to do with ToA which isn't even active on the Classic servers. This game deserves a good word of mouth, so I wanted to let people that are trying to decide on a game to how I feel. I hope this is helpful to you guys.

Wow, you made the game sound so fun lol.
A while ago i won DAOC and all of the expansions (including Catacombs) from a mega give away at this site, but not once have i played it...
I guess i will boot it up and try out my 30 days free.
Thanks for the info!
Glad to hear it
Read up on the realms, but I warn you, Hibernia is a little overpopulated and tends to have more of the WoW type community - if you know what I mean. (Only on Gareth, as far as I know). Come join the Mids, we have few fools and a great community.
All right will do
Ill install it and get my account setup tomorrow
If i can tear myself from EQ that is :P
Hehe mids are the zergers on Gareth, if you want a nonzerger realm go albion. I need more albs to kill.
p.s. Thanks mids for showing up at beno when we were trying to get our strength relic back from the albs yesterday. We realy enjoyed getting rolled by you guys.
I downloaded the trial about 18 days ago. My toons name is Nytur on albion/lamorak. I am loving the PvP in this game, sometimes it can feel like your playing a movie.
Make sure you get cats to make the grind go by faster, i got my Infiltrator to 44 in no time.

PLEASE SOE MAKE A CLASSIC EQ SERVER. Shadow of luclin was a prick in EQs side. PoP Was a gun to the face.
Played this a year ago....got bored after 5 days or hardcore grind .... hmm il try it again i guess via trial :>
Battleaxe, with the Catacombs expansion this game isn't a grind AT ALL. Even without it I find leveling isn't too bad, but if you plan on staying past the trial just buy Catacombs or forget it. On my fourth day into the trail I was in the store grabbing the last copy of Cata.. :O
I suggest you try the trial and see what you think. **To anyone who doesn't have catacombs (mainly those of you trying the trail) be sure to download the 2 graphics update as they are a HUGE improvement!
The trial comes with original DAoC and Shrouded Isles.. so you don't need to buy the game at the store except catacombs.
**Btw, if anyone plays on Midgard/Gareth, whisper Trotts. That's me **
I tried this gama again recently, and over the past two weeks my respect fo it has grown.
1. Minimal grind. Grouped or solo it just as easy to hit the level cap as in WoW.
2. Best PvP on the market.
3. Good community.
4. Caters to both casual and hardcore players.
If you like your game harcore, go to one of the regulat servers and you will be required to engange in an enourmous mind numbing grindfest and numerous raids just to be competetive in the high end RvR.
If that sound like torture to you, hit one of the "classisc" servers where casual and hardcore players are on more of an even field, and skill means as much as RL spare time.
If not being able to gank your realmates bothers you, head to the open PvP server and gank to your heart's content.
If PvP offends you, head to the co-op server and you will never have to fight another human.
Both the PvE and the PvP experience are among the best on the market right now. This is twice the game it was a year ago. I have been very impressed in the last two weeks.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
I played it too and I loved it! My gf didn't like it because she thought the girls weren't hot enough, can you believe that! So then I had to quit and we went on to WoW. I since then have quit WoW and she still plays but I'm playing Horizons, EQ2 and SWG. But the second I get bored of any of those I am gonna come play DAoC also, I loved the personality the game had and I loved the RvR possiblities.
Only thing I wish is that they would release a copy that has all the expansions including catacombs, if they did I would say **** it and buy it TODAY
I think, not sure, but this might be the game and all of the expansions in one.

I just wish/hope they would offer versions on DVD as well. I hate loading a ton of CDs!
I'm waiting on my catacombs expansion to come and I will be coming back to DAOC in a day or two. I left shortly after TOA cause it was just a bad expansion.

I agree.,
It truly is the best Fantasy MMORPG. Reading all this positive feedback about it wants me to go back and start it all over again.
I guess I'm gonna.
Terpeh - 50 Mana Eld on Iseult
Also definitely am gonna kick it on the Classic Server.
See you all there.

Downloading the trial right now.
It keeps telling me the supplied cd key is in the wrong format, any one know what im doing wrong?
Is the CD Key in block capital letters?
(Great writeup OP )
I have debated about just going out and buying this game and Cata, then decided to wait on something coming in the future.
Then played some more EQ2, re-unsubscribed.. Went and loaded Horizons.. laughed.. Play some more WoW... re-unsubscribe.
And NOW I read this thread with all these people saying this is such a great game!!! ARGH!
*grins*
Seriously though, I am very tempted to try it, but am not too keen on having to download a huge trial... So...
I have played Horizons, Ryzom, EQ2, Guild Wars (ha.. hahahHAHA), and now WoW...
So taking that into consideration, someone sell DAoC to me.
WHY should I go out tomorrow and buy a copy?
(I am just... so.... boooored...)

Oh. My. God.
DAOC has a huge amount of content. You have 3 realms to explore. You have something like 42 different classes to try out. Easy solo play for most toons. Last you have the best PvP combat of any game. I have seen WoW and while there are some nice ideas involved, it is simply pathetic to what DAOC has.
1. You have more interactive combat.
2. You have level specifc battlegrounds which are small areas to kill other players from other realms in. You also get to take keep/towers.
3. You can also do RvR out in the frontiers. A huge area where you can lay siege to keeps. You can batter down the door, or destroy walls. You can reduce the inner keep to a point where it provices no protection. You can level towers into rubble.
4. If you just prefer to kill other players then they added a new zone that is usually very popular that you can find other players to kill.
5. The RvR reward system is so much better than WoW.
6. RvR actually matter for the game. You conquer keeps to control teritory. The area you control determines who controls a dungeon. This dungeon is very important for the next expansion. Last each side has relics to capture that provide extra benefits to the realm having them.
Ok, yupyup the RvR etc does indeed sound awesome!
(Yeah... WoW.. sit in a Battlegrounds queue for 3 hours, or if you flag, you've got a 90% chance of just getting obliterated by some tools 20 levels above you.. Oh the fun)
Ok, so what about getting money. Will it take me 3 months to catch up to those already playing, to be able to afford anything?
How do I get new gear. I want a nice new staff and a robe, or whatever I'd wear as a Priest type (as I always play), so how would I go about getting that?
Are there plenty of 'young' people about for me to be able to link up with and group with?
Can't think of anything else at the moment. Thanks in advance, and for the very informative post by Julian.

I'm sure you received an answer to this already, but since I experienced it 2 nights ago reinstalling the Platinum Version, I'll share my findings. The wrong format is due to not using the dashes. If you need to enter the cd key in a full bar (not one split with multiple sections) you need to use the dashes. Also, I found that when installing from the Platinum Box, I needed to cancel and quit after entering each cd key (3 since I bought cat's as a stand alone).
But to keep in the spirit of the post, I came back after 2 years of no DAoC and while I'm sorry about the ground textures, the overall graphics do look better. I still see the same choppy motion I did 2 years ago, and occasionally see the person riding their horse standing on the horse's back, rather than sitting. Barring that, I remember why I enjoyed the game, but had to start over with a new character as my old server is down to 280-ish ppl prime time. And that character was only level 45, so I don't get the /level benefits.
Mado
There are a set of quests from level 1-5 that give you good gear for your level and walk you through the mechanics of the game. There are drops that can be pretty good and quest items as well. If you have the catacombs expansion you can go into instances called private adventure wings where aurulite drops. You can then exchange those items for some really good gear. There is another dungeon called Darkness Falls where mobs drop seals. Those seals can be exchanged for ok items.
Then you can buy crafted gear. If you can buy crafted gear and then afford to have it spellcrafted it is in most cases the best equipment you can get. However, that can be expensive.
If you play on the new 'classic' servers there are no enough crafters/spellcrafters out so most people use drop loot. On the older servers you can afford the top equipment and spellcrafting of it shortly after getting to level 50. If you take the free levels offered the game gives you money. At level 50 if you are in a good spot you can make enough for everyting in a couple of weeks of farming as a worst case scenario.
Most people use drop equipment and/or hand downs for levels 1-40. You level so quickly very few people have the time, luck, and resources to buy equipment and have it spellcrafted for a level 30. I know a few people who did well with only droped loot until 50.
On the regular servers there are very few people below level 20. You will find some. After 20 it gets better, but your best chance for groups will be to get into a good guild. On the new servers there are a huge amount of people of all levels to group with.
While I do not play on the classic servers, to anyone doing the trial or just trying to get into the game I would suggest playing those first. Later on you can move to the regular servers. I think the regular servers have a much better community so I prefer to play there (not to mention staring over has 0% desirablity for me).
I may just pick it up.. has it improved any over shrouded isle because I remember playing from 1-15 and being bored so damn much.. And I hear bots/cheaters run rampant nowadays.. is it that bad or people just exaggerating?
