Goodbye Massively indeed. With a job that requires periodic security checks, which include social networking, and with more and more employers seeking access to your social networking sites, inlcuding requiring you give them your passwords, I'll definitely refrain from ever posting there again.

Imagine having a ton of GW2 posts on your sites, and your job application in the hands of a WoW fanboy with an attitude? Yikes.

    Oderint, dum metuant.

I know that eventually, I'll be forced to create an account just to get any kind of information online.  But I'm not going to do that until it's absolutely necessary.  I'm in no hurry to have that particular UPC code tattooed on my forehead.

Hi. I'm here for the "Oblivious to Irony" meeting. Is this where I get my nametag?

I know you can make a fake facebook. but the "you don't ahve anything to hide" comment is pretty naive. I would NOT link my fb account to anything like a public forum. I don't want/need some creeper stalking my page, my wife's page. Looking at my pictures of my kids.

And yes I know that stuff is up there already, but unless someone knows what and who they are looking for they won't find me..

So yeah.. I would never link my fb account.

Please check out my channel. I do gaming reviews, gaming related reviews & lets plays. Thanks!

facebook and twitter = nothing but complaining.

"I wish this day was over."

"Rain on my weekend. Go figure."

"IDIOT checked in at Cincinnati, OH McDonalds."

MMORPG.com is mostly complaining, too. But at least I'm interested in what people say. I could give a **** about how "X" hatres their job.

So you haven't figured out you can create dummy emails, twitter pages and facebook accounts?

Welcome to the internet. I see you just joined.

    Yes I was being facetious

Heck, your mmorpg.com account has email. he could use that.

I don't know where you got the 'real name' crap from, as that's not remotely true. Just set yourself up a fake Twitter account and be done.

Personally, I dislike using a third-party service to log in anywhere, but I dislike false information a lot more.

Sites like io9.com use Facebook for auth, which I find nice, but then allow you to set a different screen name.  That's how it should be done, IMO.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

In fact, social media is actually 100% user created content, so it is only vacuous and those other things you say if you or the people you know make it so.

I recieve updates from my local political group on it, as well as the local charity that I run a monday night gaming club for. I also use it to interact with my local tabletop gaming group, as well as follow and discuss books, movies, comic, bands and live music, and art (all of which could be called 'vacuous' I guess, but to me are meaningful). It also allows me to have a closer contact with family and friends all over the world, who regularly post funny and insightful stuff, as well as news about their world. I use it to maintain contact with gaming buddies from games that I have stopped playing and organise what one we might play next. Me and my best mate co-mod a small FB group for UK online gamers to chat about game and related content.

So... like I say... it is what the user makes it.

If you are attacking it for being 'vacuous' and 'navel gazing' then you are really not talking about FB, you are talking about the people that make up your world, which is a pretty low and damning opinion of them tbh.

Again, FB is user created content.

You are not criticising the medium, you are criticising the people in your extended social circle.

You obviously, if this is your experience, know only whiners and complainers.

Lol Vesavius, at your "When you think social media sucks, your friends suck" reasoning.

    That's harsh, man :P

Very hard to think of an argument against that.

Still, you can't deny that there's a certain amount of narcism involved in many social media users.

Regarding FB, I personally found that it is annoying to artificially keep up some kind of relation with people who you wouldn't want to stay in contact with if they didn't happen to be on facebook too, but you really can't get it over your heart to simply ignore / unfriend them. Awkward moments.

EDIT: JUST REALIZE THIS IS MY 5000TH POST!

I CAN HAS SHUGAR LUMPZ PLS?

hehe no, I wouldnt deny that Pony, but every couple of months or so I steel my heart and have a cull.

The carnage is horrible. Blood on the walls.

Yep, I can't see any attraction in joining Faecesbook(tm) which is why I never bother with it.  The people on it are a fairly pitiable bunch for the most part.

Anyway, everyone uses "junk" email accounts to sign up to websites (which you never log in to actually check the mail), so what's to stop people just making a fake Facebook page or something?  Make a page under an alias (points awarded for comedy names like Hugh Janus) and who would know or even care?

    Okay.

I accepted the invite of one of my old High School buddies. It then spawned into about 250-300 other invites from fellow class / college mates.

haha that's what happened to me and the reason I left. But it wasn't old classmates, it was  relatives I didn't know I had. Suddenly I had 100+ cousins image Even harder to remove relatives from your friends list I assure you even if you have never met them and never knew they existed.

Datamining websites inevitably link all your twitter, facebook, gmail, youtube, and miscellaneous forum/gamer tags. With a bnet account you will even been tied directly to your characters. You can sock puppet all you want, but the odds are against you.

I do this.  I have a couple of Twitter accounts (one legit, one gaming) and  Facebook page that's just for my wow hunter.  Since I refuse to give AOL access to my main twitter account - they have my gaming account and it works fine.  YMMV

Facebook is smart to try and imbed themselves into the internet as much as possible. They are everywhere now, and will be much harder to just abandon like other social networking sites.
