Cant decide if this game is TERAbad, or just TERAble
Wouldnt be so bad if they did a better job at questing and implementing westernization. Remove Popori, half naked metrosexual elves and 5 year old girls as player classes and put in gritty, masculine character types plus remove the cutsey art style and you may have gotten a wider audience. The combat is sort of fun but is too realistic and penalizes instead of promotes the gameplay. The greatest detractor for me was the player races and the mob art types. It just looks liek it was developed for 12 year olds and that is its main detractor.

" implementing westernization"
Define westernization. En Masse so far has gone above and beyond what any other publisher/co-developer of an Asian imported MMO has delivered. What else do people want? Even more hand holding? Yes and at the same time no. They can't win. They just can't.
" Remove Popori, half naked metrosexual elves and 5 year old girls as player classes and put in gritty, masculine character types plus remove the cutsey art style and you may have gotten a wider audience."
We'd end up with a game that's not TERA. Which is what the people who didn't like it want. If just by looking at any of the promo videos using the in-game graphics doesn't stir you and make you want to go to there (hehe Liz Lemon) then please, move along and try something else. There are plen-ty of spiffy looking titles out now and in the future.
"The combat is sort of fun but is too realistic and penalizes instead of promotes the gameplay. "
I'm not alone in this: I don't like games where characters can flail about during combat. The animations then look weird. Torso separate from legs and arms swinging wildly about a heavy weapon. *cringe*
Combat is hefty, meaty and reminds me of my favorite single player action games. I have to be on my toes and not squander a skill and think of my positioning for maximum skill usage.
Action games have several sub genres. TERA's is a take on this. Some will like it, others won't. I just don't like everyone suddenly jumping on the "OMG I'm rooooted" bandwagon.
"The greatest detractor for me was the player races and the mob art types."
So you picked up TERA blindly and just started playing? Its "player races and mob art types" are front and center everywhere one may look. Videos, pictures...the websites.
"It just looks liek it was developed for 12 year olds and that is its main detractor."
Weird game developed for 12 year olds where the rating for the West is ESRB: M (Blood; Suggestive Themes; Violence).
Wow all those people who call themselves PVPers when they want a reward for doing something they enjoy, How the hell are you a PKer if you want PVP to be just like PVE.. a grindfest..... Am glad people like that wont be ruining TERA for the rest of us. You can all go to GW2 and have all your Epic battleground battles, At least next time you talk about a game, get your information right so maybe people actually take you seriously.

It just looks liek it was developed for 12 year olds and that is its main detractor.
Did you think a lot before u typed that? First of all it's in America for age +17 and Europe age +12, and second for my guild for example we are about 70 people and most of us are over 20 years old. Probably more kids will play games F2P and B2P like your Humanity savior GW2.

If you can enjoy TERA, so be it... So far I've played beta yesterday... it's ... the mot boring game ever. Yes graphic are awesome but gameplay is utterly boring as hell. Hold LEft mouse button and wait... gg you lvl up, run to next mob, hold button, repeat. Tried multiple classes, same shit but caster you can cast 1-2spell by the time get to you. Anyway... IOf the early game experience is this boring, it doesnt promise to end game.
And as "humanity savior GW2" it has far better combat then TERA. No doubt about that

er, Bingo,
The problem is, and it is a problem, that the combat starts out really simple.
There is much more to the combat but unfortunatley it doesn't open up more until around the 20's. I realize that someone is going to say "a game should capture you from lvl 1" and I would agree but "it is what it is".
Heck, my lancer just got a shield bash skill in the late 20's.
The combat is much more visceral than holding down one button. It's just a shame that this is not shown from the "get go".
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
-pvp is meaningless (but I didnt actually try it, just going on the info)
Just a note, when you review something it should be based off what you see and play, not what you here. If it was off what you hear, a lot of recent flops would of been glorious successes (no, not mentioning what, we all know what it is). I'll just not say any more and leave you that note if you decide to review in the future...
That and you should include far more content instead of small bullet points that tell very little and seem a bit unorganized.

I don't know any MMORPG to be complicated by the first lvls if you know know tell me because as ALL games you will have very few skills to use at first lvls and it's Completely logical to be the same thing, go further and tell me then if it's the same. Every game you kill mobs what negative argument is that?. Is there any game in which you will not kill mobs often?. I don't see why GW2 combat(I haven't tested it yet through like MOST people) could be better than Tera because it's just a update of old WoW combat system.
And last I at least tried Tera more and I know all mmorpgs at beginning are repetive at combat so make more logical arguments and not just flame Tera.
Ginaz, since you are here commenting you should look around some other threads about TERAs PvP, lots of good info.
Not everyone believes PvP needs to have more incentive to engage in it other than to fight other people. When it's fun you don't need to be "paid" to do it. I will trade TERAs Deathmatch system for the three battlegrounds you get in SWTOR any day.
There has to be a reason to pvp other than just for the hell of it. Having fun is important but after awhile if theres no point to it, then it just becomes glorified dueling. I enjoyed playing as a Bounty Hunter in pre-nge swg because there was a consequence to my actions (loss of xp from the Jedi players I killed). The only in game reward/incentive I got were credits but it was still the most fun I've ever had in an MMO because of what was at stake (I also enjoyed fighting BHs playing my Jedi). After the nge was put in place, there were no consequences at all other than the minor inconvenience of the loss of time and buffs so it was pointless.
If you have any facts to refute the perception that there isn't much to pvp in this game, esp. for solo players, please feel free to present them. And if I wanted a deathmatch system, I'll play a FPS or World of Tanks.
<>
SWTOR is still going to have more people than Tera ever will in the US. Why? For a game thats supposed to be centred on pvp, it sure doesn't seem to have a whole lot of it and what it does have is pretty meaningless. Someone else summed this up fairly well:
No battlegrounds of any kind at launch at least for solo players
Some kind of grouped battleground available(10 man)
Battlegrounds may be in this summer
World PvP has no real objectives or purpose, just gank
Ah, I missed your actual point about SOLO PvP because you blanketed the entirety of PvP with it. The PvP in TERA has been lauded because of how open it is and how many types you can engage in. PvP is always on in TERA if you're on a PvP server. Other than not getting rewards (yet, because it's still CBT, more on that at the end) if you like PvP TERA would seem to be a good home for you.
If what your looking for is an additional dynamic to solo PvPing, like your SWG comparison, I don't thnk your going to find it. Other group PvP aspects such as GvG have a huge purpose if you care about your standing on the server. When you think about it there is no reason to call a whole system bad because it doesn't have that one thing you're looking for. I would argue that TERA has more ways to PvP than any other game I can thing of:
OWPvP
Outlaw PvP
Deathmatches
Guild vs. Guild
Duels
City "Circle"
I added Outlaw and City Cirlce because those would be different "roles" (e.g. criminal and gladiator respectively) and in an RPG there are those that like playing those roles. Battlegrounds will be added "late this summer" and most likely have a rating system. My own personal belief is that they will also have more dynamics than just a separate zone to battle, we shall see.
Lastly, EME has a big patch planned after CBT5 since the Open Beta patch will be the launch build more or less. All of the characters in Open Beta will be kept past launch. If you're unsure about TERA now be watching for that patch. You will still have a chance to play the four days of the Open Beta without committing.
