it is considered trolling/bad to post a comment like "this game sucks" without providing any reasons why you feel this way. I think this is a reasonable rule as this is a discussion forum and simple posting opinion without reason doesnt really allow for discussion.
why doesnt this rule apply to people who post "this game is awesome", "best gaem eva!111", "this game is great" without posting reasons as to why?
This is a forum, where we discuss stuff. Without saying why the game sucks or are awesome it is just waste of bandwidth since it doesn't really opens up anything for discussion.
Saying that a game sucks and listing the reason why you think it does is still fine as long as you don't copy and paste the same thing in every thread you post in.

Maybe because negative posts lead to flame wars, and positive ones only lead to flame wars if the other person has no self control. Who gets mad about someone saying a game is good? People with no self control.
Or you know, an agenda.
well if you havent realised the reason why have been/are stuck with such crappy mmorpgs for the past couple of years or so is because people keep overhyping things encouraging devs to continue releasing similar flaming pieces of turds because they no they will get make profit due to hype.
negative posts only tighten up devs and remind them to keep improving their game. postiive posts do the opposite. saying a crap game is good and spreading this is damaging to the industry. this is how we got a decade of wow clones.
So then by your logic, people hyping GW2's different approaches should be good for the genre. I agree.
So then by your logic, people hyping GW2's different approaches should be good for the genre. I agree.
I think it would be better for the genre if they waited until after the game is actually out, being different is not always good no matter how much the genre needs change.
I am a huge anet fan and think so far soo good but hyping a game you never even tried can backfire badly and lead to wrong information and false hope.
Hyping a game you played a bit that is different, that will tip people who never heard of it and increase sales in the long run. If the games trying different stuff like GW2, TSW, Class 4 and WoDO will grow and grow after launch it would finally signal to the investors that people are tired of the same old stuff but still want MMOs.
We really don´t need more WAR and AOCs, GW2 seems so far to be a great game but overhyping something is not the solution, let's wait until we are 100% sure and then force our MMO buddies to try it out instead.

true. i think the combat changes are good and the questing system and WvWvW are different to what we have been seeing recently.
but it is important to criticise poor descicions as well like RMT, meaningless crafting, typical themepark gameplay-nothing to do apart from killing things, fixed class system with little customisation, zones rather than seamless open world, players cannot affect world, no player economy.
i think you have been bitten by the gw2 bug and you cannot see that gw2 isnt really as innovative as it seems, it will play very similar to other mmorpgs out there.

1. It's not always what you say but how you say it. Being a rude jerk tends to get one more friction than being nice. Telling people what they like sucks is offensive because you're making a negative judgement call about others. Saying nice things isn't offensive. If you don't get that you're in for a whole world of pain and agony, not just here but in life as a whole.
2. It doesn't really matter what you think the rules should be. It doesn't matter what I think the rules should be. We don't make the rules. The site owners and administrators make the rules. That's how it is. Take it or leave it.
i dont understand why anyone should feel insulted if i say something a video game they like is bad. i criticised the video game, not them. they are probably suffering from a severe mental illness if they at "one" with a video game. doesnt seem like a normal healthy behaviour to me.

It will never cease to amaze me how overly invested so many mmo gamers get over titles that aren't even released. I am a fan of many great movies, but I wasn't one until I actually watched the films.

must be locked cause teh thread isnt working. is that your only example of this epidemic?
just have a look at game forums prior to the games release. i wouldnt be making this thread for no reaon. usually when someone says "this game is awesome" and nothing else, it is in reply to a video or article that is posted as the main topic of the thread. So that in fact becomes the reason, which sorta disproves the point you are making.

dude just have a look at this thread. Eir_s just posted something about gw2 being awesome without any reasoning on page 2. this thread isnt even about gw2.
I do not like this game BECAUSE - and then present some comparisons, even if it is just personal preference. The most important thing to remember is that you could be one of the mis-informed.
I'll use the secret world as an example. I do not like the dungeon aspect of the game, I do not feel they are doing their class system justice by using tank/heals/dps in dungeons while boasting a classless system.
I like this game because I think I will enjoy - again, present some points to discuss beyond 'Crafting is cool'. A valid reply could simply be - "I enjoy this crafting because - it gives me good items / it has an interesting material gathering system / it is a nice break from the breakneck speed of the game." Simply saying 'it is cool / lame' is a statement with zero substance.
I'll use the secret world again because it's very convenient XD. I love the fact that they are putting in puzzles which require actual research, thinking and puzzle solving. I've always felt that MMOs could tap into a very VERY rich world of tabletop / GM mechanics which could be worked into the genre. This idea is still new and probably needs a lot of work but I would like to see this kind of stuff in future MMOs, but damn it's exciting to see people shun the status quo.
Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

Good word of mouth = better cash flow from vendors seeking to advertise. Bad word of mouth = worse cash flow from vendors fleeing the hostile environment. It's lame but it's business.
so essentially the news, reviews, previews by staff on this site are completely worthless
Worthless? No. News is news, you can't put a positive spin on bad news, unless you just don't report it. A preview is what it is. As far as reviews, they are pretty worthless at 95% of magazines and websites. It's always been that way with games, as far as I can remember. Gaming websites/magazines make their money through advertising, it's pretty easy to imagine why they aren't going to bad mouth a game/developer/publisher that is either giving them money to advertise or may give them money in the future. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
There are plenty of places to get objective reviews around the web. Lots of gaming communities around that will give you the down low. However in the end a review is nothing more than an opinion. Your mileage may vary.
Eurogamer review about Darkfall single handedly almost destroyed Darkfall becouse it was reviewed by sandbox FFA hater who was to dumb even learn the simplest things ingame and just gave the game when he failed a 2/10 he played 25min. Many sites give reviews that can destroy small indie companys forever.
