Thankfully, I apparently wasn't alone in my feelings! In fact, TOR Lead Designer Daniel Erickson addressed this issue in last week's Community Q&A:
Players have expressed some dissatisfaction with endgame armor sets – can you comment on your plans for future endgame appearances?
Daniel Erickson: We have heard the community loud and clear when it comes to armor sets. What we’ve heard the players say is, “I don’t care how high level I get, I still want my core sets to look and feel like Star Wars and like my class - cooler but not crazy. Keep the crazy to optional gear.” I will warn that creating new armor is a part of our game with long lead times so it will take a set or so before players see a strong shift in direction but we’re already working on some stuff I love and I think players will too.
I'm pretty satisfied with this response. Sure, it'll take a little bit to see the fruit of BioWare's response to this feedback, but I'm glad to hear they were receptive to it and actually plan on moving on it!
Just so people don't be deceived creating a whole new character meshes and textures included requires roundly 5 to 10 days work effort for a modeler and texturer artist combined.
So unless they have only one artist they could have fixed all the new gear in time and get the sign off from LA too.
I actually wrote about the silly armor in one of my columns. Thankfully, I apparently wasn't alone in my feelings! In fact, TOR Lead Designer Daniel Erickson addressed this issue in last week's Community Q&A:

I wonder if anyone actually has said they like it, seems like universal condemnation, yet they have basically said, it's going in regardless and we have another set of clown outfits in the works and we are not changing those either.

Just so people don't be deceived, there's a lot more involved than some would you believe. BioWare also has a limited number of employees, and a long list of things to get done, so there are going to have to have priorities.
The new armor has to be designed and approved, a process that can take a lot of time when everyone is so busy. Then they can start modelling, and texturing, and trying out the models with all possible animations. Then more approval and possibly design processes. Then you have to modify it to match all of the different body types that it has to go on, including all possible sizes, and for both sexes. That process may require some design and approval as well.
Oh, then you have to do that again for each advanced class.
And you have to do it more than once, because people do not want just one new set of armor.
It sounds to me like there are just a lot of whiners here who are going to rag on BW no matter what they say. For how long have we been asking for a dev to say "We've heard your complaints, we agree with you, and we are going to fix it". And then.... they work on fixing it!
So the complainer go right to either a) there's no excuse for this to have been that way in the first place, damn them for not making it perfect the first time! or b) I want the change instantly! Damn these people for having human limitations! Damn them for having a priority list with a number of things they're working on, and damn them again for not having my personal pet issue on the very top of that list!

As opposed to someone who pre-judges someone's opinion?

5 to 10 days work is a silly assumption.
