Don't know what the deal is with all the hate. I liked her in The Guild and Eureka on Sci-Fi.

You talk about her mis-representing girl gamers? Perhaps in the 90s when they wered considered a rare species that would be a valid concern. However, in this day and age, that stereotype has already been broken. No one is treating her as a "gamer girl" as much as no one is treating you as a girl gamer. Nowadays, we are all gamers. If we were to actually step down on your level, we would judge you as the one mis-representing girl gamers for being stubborn on a subject ultimately no one really cares about - a.k.a. shallow. Retaining the same level of shallowness, you can take your two better women (no offense to those women) and play barbie dolls else where.

Things haven't changed. Women are treated as lesser people in games.. they are sexualized and many are encouraged to become the small group who get items handed to them because they send out naked pics and such. They are also not taken seriously because of their gender. Trust me it is still a valid concern. If you do not see that then I am glad.. but I do and I have seen it in every game I have played.

You're right. I personaly know 2 women who either used male avatars and/or pretended to be men because they just didn't want to deal with the crap that comes with being a girl in an online video game.

I will say this is one of the reasons I will never be one of those guys who plays a female character in an MMO, but really I think that sort of thing makes men look bad, not women.

As for women who want to give out nude pics of themselves, thats entirely their own choice. I really hate how some women think that because other women choose to live their lives differently than them, that they someone reflect badly on the gender as a whole.

If you ask me, its those types that are the sexist/oppressive ones because

    1) They try to undermine a woman's right of choice.

    2) They somehow see each woman's actions as a representation of the whole, disregarding that woman's individualism.

No one (at least in any first-world countries) forces you or any other woman to behave a certain way. Its true that some men are jerks, but a whole lot more really are not. Why are some men more forward than others? Its got a lot to do with gender roles.

When it comes to relationships, men have always been the hunters, the ones who put their pride on the line and bear all the embarrassment of rejection. Women, on the other hand, typically just make themselves presentable, stand out there and say "Here I am, come and get it!" while waiting for a suitable bite. The rejected men get thrown back, and thrown back, until you find one you like. If no man ever tried (no matter how badly he fails) the human race would likely dwindle away. Its the way societies have been for centuries, and it wont change unless women start doing more of the "hunting" themselves.

Anyway, its past midnight and I'm tired. I swear I had a direction with this when I first started typing, but its kind of turned into a huge rant.

Where's that pesky little post button? Ah there it...

What amazes me about the people tearing down Felicia is that not one of you have commented on the clearly sexist posts in this thread. Apparently Felicia doing her job (acting) is so abhorrent as to destroy the very fabric of female gaming, but those making sexist and messaganistic comments don't even warrent attention. What would you call the motivation given the evidence in this thread... Concern for female gamers does not truly seem to be one of them.

Now if people on here want we can truly talk about how to make female gaming better. Tearing down an actress which has never professed to represent female gaming is not productive and smacks of pettiness.

Comments which are sexist have already been counter-argued so many times that repeating the procedure again would be an act of beating a horse that has been dead for decades.

She actually wrote a web series based upon her personal experience.

People enjoyed the series and now she gets a lot of press among gamers.

----- And so she is a fake, how, exactly?

The entire show is a sarcastic remark on the stereotypes found in most mmos. You are suppose to laugh at her character in The Guild. Look at the other guild members - they are all very sad stereotypes of mmo gamers....so you don't find her character believable or insulting - what must you think of Vork?

She isn't championing the stereotype - she is poking fun at it

I'm sorry you guys don't like the stereotype girl gamer she is typecast as; I prefer to laugh at it as she intended.

    But fake?

And when your whole argument is 'she isn't pretty and she's a fake' ; you have to admit your not exactly showing a deep, thoughtful argument.

I agree with the jealousy assessment, this whole thread seems very adolescent to me.

One problem is that they keep reinforcing stereotypes. Much like comments such as "OMG Felicia Day" do.

How on Earth can you judge how "intelligent" a person is through that? I can definitely not see a clear difference between a person with 120 IQ and 130 IQ by just analyzing day-to-day talks and their articles even though I knew exactly what different IQ scores my friends had received.

You may find that she writes things that you find interesting, but that doesn't mean that you automatically can guess if her intelligence is average, above average or below average. I very much doubt that you know exactly how those different degrees of intelligence shine through in their articles.

If anything, she's creative and successful. These two signs, to me at least, point to some fashion of intelligent life.

Err, no, the word  "gamer" still has strong negative stereotypes associated with it. Much like the word "geek" has as well. For that we can partly thank all those "proud" "geeks" who keep reinforcing old stereotypes. What a normal person can say safely now is basically that they enjoyed to play this and that game on their leisure time.

National merit scholar, Valedictorian, accepted to Juilliard, full scholarship for violin to University of Austin... acting and performing from an early age. She writes with a pretty prodigious output, and it's about a subject to which we all relate. Plus she's got several Whedonverse folks in her circle, and that all adds up to fun enough for me. Don't care what she looks like, personally. I am curious, given her fairly public history (and geek cred dating back to Buffy) what evidence there is for the allegations of falsity and misrepresentation. Through her writing, acting, and voice over work alone she's justified her place in the world of gaming, as nebulous that is. There's a distinction to be made between the "pro gamer girls" that have been mentioned here, and someone who plays casually (and most mmos are pretty casual, as opposed to skill- based). I don't think anyone ever claimed Felicia had mad skills in the gaming world.

    BINGO!

The hate does not add up to the person. I don't think she has nor has anyone in this thread talked up her gaming ability. However the counter arguments have been (in no specific order)

    1) She is not good looking.

    2) She is not a good gamer.

    3) She gives a bad name to women gamers.

She is an actress who has gamed in the past. All this hate makes no sense. Not saying everyone has to like her or think she is good, but there is full blown hatred in this thread which no one has yet rationally explained why. All the characters male and female in The Guild are over the top... Satire is not the same as reality. Show me an interview or something tangible to back up this blind hatred being pushed in here. I have yet to see any which makes many of the comments in this thread irrational or biased for an underlying reason other than their point.

Also while it is tougher for girl gamers... many experiences expressed in the later part of this thread come down to being in a bad guild. Find a good guild with mature players and being in vent and in the game becomes much less hostile. If you choose to run with immature hyper horny males, you will have a bad experience. The past three guilds I have been in over the past 10 years (spanning every mmo back to Asheron's Call) have a strict policy when it comes to female gamers. I have had the opportunity of playing with scores of female gamers in that time. Approximately 20 - 30% were drama queens or actively sought out the attention of males. Some were quickly weeded out, one brought down an alliance, then the guild, and others were tolerated until they got bored and moved on. The majority however played drama free and largely harassment free. When an incident came up the males that caused the issue were warned then booted if they continued.

Gaming is what you make of it. If you choose to stay in a guild that tolerates harassment... expect to have a bad experience. Finding a good guild can be hard to do, but if you set rules and look for specific traits in the leadership one will come along. All three guilds that I have been in were very protective of our female members in and out of the game. A good gamer of either sex is hard to find and a good guild goes out of its way to keep them. At the end of the day Falicia Day does not cause you to get harassed.

Because it's about a guild who only know each other through their characters in-game, they are obviously playing a WoW-like game, it's funny and uses gamer in-jokes and typical mmorpg motifs, it's popular and it's been around for a quite a while. I thought it was well known amongst the mmo gamer community, so i'm surprised at how many on this thread have not heard of it. Go to YouTube and see what you think. Maybe start with the first series though.

I read a couple of posts here and i got to say that i cant put in my head how are people amazed at particular girl being a gamer...

I mean, come on. Even my ex-gf was a gamer, and followed games more hardcore than me. More than half of girls in my company are gamers. Maybe this is over a top a bit, but very few girl that i talked to, mentioned things like Farmville, Sims or anything similar on FB when me or her started topic about games (yet it has proven that they are low intelligence ones). You would be amazed how many girls are playing games hardcore.

Felicia is cute, have nice voice and all of that, and thats all. For me to decide if i want to be with her/mary her/spend a night with her/walk in park with her, i would need to meet her in personal, to see her attitude, to know her interests. Being cute is not everything for anyone with common sense. This being said, I can freely say that i even know a couple of local celebrities in person that seems to be duchebags on TV and all, but in reallity are nice people.

Considering being girl in-game: i am one of those guys that use Female characters in many games (lol @ my sig :D). Main reason is that i love Heroines in Roleplaying Games, Comic Books, Novels etc. However when i see some weirdo that automaticly think that female character = female irl, i use him as much as i can. It is their fault that they cant tell what is game and what is real life. Sad thing is that you cant get rid of girl-hunters in game once they start to bothering you. Somehow they are fanatically sure that they will gonna meet you in real life even when you live in Europe and He is living in South pole.

You said "The real reason for hate in this thread... because Felicia has managed to be successful. " which is a common way to express the sentiment that "People hate Felicia because they are jealous".

If you didn't intend to give that implication, elaborate how you think "Felicia being successful" is the "real reason" for hating her.
