Hype and fanboyism makes me lose interest in GW2

makiimakii Member Posts: 280

I loved GW1, but back in the day i also didnt knew anything about the game. When i played and discovered things i got that wonderful feeling like when a little boy gets his most desired toy on birthday.

But GW2 is different, i know alot about the game, followed every news and and red every article. Nothing compared to GW1, where i discovered everything on my own.

I made once a bad experience with Final Fantasy 8. I loved FF7 and thought FF8 is going to be even better, but it wasnt. Ive red there many reviews and articles too and somehow when i played it, i had that bad feeling i cant describe anymore. I jsut hated FF8 in the end.

Im feeling like its going to be the same with GW2. To much information has been leaked out, to many vids were showing. To much hype was genereted.

Im not quite sure if im going to buy GW2. It doesnt really matter what a great game it is, once you got that bad feeling, its hard to loosen.

ive seen so many vids and it feels like ive played it already trough, without touching it myself. Its like ive played it to the endgame, without playing it to the endgame. Its like ive seen the ending movie, without seeing the ending movie.

Anyone got similiar feelings?

Why dont you base your opinion on the facts the game presents to you?

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Nope. Not with me. Pre-purchased it and not feeling bad any second of my life.

Maybe with GW1 it was different, because back in the days when GW1 was about to come out there was not so much reviewers, journalists, websites that do that and all that stuff. I could be wrong, but I think that's why. If there would be a lot of that stuff at that time - I think you would have the same feeling.

Limiting yourself to not watch videos/read info is pretty easy. I don't mind, so I don't do it.

No, because we've seen only very small amount of content, maybe like 2%. We've seen 2 pvp maps, WvW, 3 newbie zones, 1 dungeon, a few mid level zones. Gw2 is much bigger than you think. We've seen what type of content you will encounter but not the content itself.

Ye i kind of agree, just back up and don't read anymore untill you can actually play it by your own. Don't watch too much video too. You will probably forget this all once you play the game anyway since nothing can really catch direct experience.

imo your title is abit missleading in comparison with what you wrote....but agree so far that if I log into a MMO today and is presented with a quest the second I log in, then personally im already in a "urgh" sort of mood.....depending abit on how it is presented.

but imo its your own fault if you loose intrest over watching video´s, especially when you already know it have this effect on you...better to be uninformed and excited, than informed and then never get to really play the games....unless ofc you d rather find yourself a new hobby...knitting is supposed to be the new and hot thing to do...or maybe that was just last year? ;)

Sorry to hear OP, for me it's the exact opposite.

I know enough of a game to buy it, and know I'm gonna have such a good time for a while, and I continue to watch TotalBiscuit, the Yogcast, TapRepeatedly etc for more information cause I don't even for a second think I will manage to see everything in the game :)

We have brought the hype IMHO on ourselves. At one point at the end of last year I felt quite annoyed with myself and everyone for hyping the game, and reading every possible thing into all the statements arenanet made. Arenanet would sneeze, and someone would find a way to read into it that the game was coming out on such and such a date, or a new profession would be revealed. I got sick of it, though once I got over it I realised the game is STILL a kick ass game, and you would be a fool to ignore it.

To the OP... you watch all the vids then slate it saying there are to many vids to watch... are you serious ? you are just pissed that you cant play it me feels...

Ask yourself if you'd still have played the game without having read forums where "hype" is present.  That's what I ask myself when I'm playing games.  I don't let anyone's opinions or chatter affect my decisions.  For instance, I never would have bought TOR regardless of what was said here because I'm not a Star Wars fan, and I didn't like TERA after I played it because to me, it  doesn't have what I want in a game.  If you base your opinions off of forums, you will always be bitter and waiting for the next MMO to flame.

    This

The fact is, there are a few people who will refuse to see any flaws, faults or shortcomings what so ever in GW2. They'll say that no game is perfect and that every game has bugs and flaws, but they haven't actually acknowleged any because they don't want to see them.

Anyway, those people have a false expectation on the game. The irony is, those who have a realistic view on GW2 will end up enjoying it more than those who are expeting the MMO revolution.

I've been looking forward to a Dual Pistol wielding character since my Advie in AO. I am going to have a blast in GW2.

The game is highly anticipated, so there's going to be a lot of videos, previews and editorials created for it. I don't understand how this could detract one from wanting the game - information is simply being supplied. If the information objectively diminishes your interest in the game, then that's fine. But to let buzz ruin it for you is a tad silly; just don't make the game to be some messianic new product and it will be enjoyable.

Didnt we just have a thread like this one?

    um, NO.  Because

    A. I like what I see, and when I like what I see, I wanna see more...........see?

    B. I like what I like, and everyone else is free to like it, or not like it, and it has no bearing on me liking it.

I really don't know what we can do for you here, or, what anyone can do.  I was under the impression the "hype and fanboyism", had made you lose interest.  Then, when I was reading your post, I got the impression that you had just seen way too much content.  So, I'm not sure of the reason you lost interest, but, either way, the only thing you'll get here is more "hype and fanboyism", and more discussion about content.  So, really, posting here, seems like a lose lose proposition for you.  Unless of course you'd like to join in with the chorus of detractors.  We've got plenty of those.

why would you even care about the hype and faboys? if you like it, just wait for the game to come out and stop reading the forums.

Though if it was your favorite mmo you would be posting good things about the game like it is going out of style. Face it, it is going to be a damn good mmo! :)

If hype and fanboism puts you off the game,  why are you watching those vidoes and read those interviews ?

  • DistopiaDistopia Member EpicPosts: 21,183

Most of what you seem to be saying lies in your own actions, when it comes down to it, you either choose to watch all of these videos and read all information or you don't. I know what you're saying though, personally I've only read enough to know what the game is about. I've watched a few videos but not very many, the only reason I have watched any of them was to inform myself on a certain discussion taking place (usually linked in said discussion). I really don't go out of my way to find them.

Part of what makes MMO's great is learning about it as you play, discovering things you didn't know about etc. Being an information hound can definitely ruin that.

Yeah, it comes down to self regulations. I feel you.  I got to a point where I realized that I wasn't doing the other things i do in my freetime, instead i was watching the umpteenth video.   After realizig this I began devling into another hobby until i felt like doing some more GW2 stalking.

Thats the aftereffect. Maybe something like a burn out.

Let me phrase it this way: You cant eat fish every day.

I know that GW2 looks good, im not denying anything of that. Maybe im just overfed with information, that i dont feel the need to play it anymore. Because, it doesnt matter what new things it may bring, the game mechanic of Gw2 was introduced a dozen times and now it doesnt matter anymore in wich way the present the upper lvl content since it seems to work with the same formula over and over.

It feels like that Battlestar Galactica episode 33. Where ever 33 minutes we keep reliving the same experience over and over.

You know what, I am so sick of this untruth!  I honestly don't know ANYONE, that has this unrealistic view of the game.  When someone disputes falsehoods made on this board about the game, it's inferred that that automatically constitutes fanboism and an unrealistic perfectionist messianic view of the game!  WTH?  I guess no ones "facts" are to be challenged?  Everyone should just sit by and let any misinformation stand?  I honestly try to stay out of it, it's not fun.  I have issues with this game.  I'm an old man, set in my ways, I honestly don't know if I can adapt to the new chaotic playstyle.  Why should I voice that when there are plenty of people denouncing the game on a constant basis?  The fact is, I don't have to voice my misgivings, because we are INUNDATED with the stuff.  And again I say, if there wasn't so much trolling and manure spreading on this board, those of us who are excited about the game, would indeed be discussing A. The actual game as we know it, and B. OUR misgivings, concerns, disiikes etc.  Instead of popping into the latest "boohoo, fanboyism is ruining it for me" thread.

Hype, ok, hype, whatever you wanna say about it.  The fact is, if it didn't look SO DAMN GOOD, there wouldn't be this "hype"!  And I don't mean just graphically!  For those of us who are excited about it, it may be one thing, it may be many things that are getting us excited.  Like ANYTHING ELSE IN LIFE, you weigh the negatives with the positives, and you make a decision!  Those of us who are hyped, those of us who are "fanboys", have decided that YES, THERE ARE NEGATIVES, WE KNOW IT'S NOT PERFECT!  But for US, the positives outweigh the negatives, and for many of us, it's by a large margin!  Therefore we are all in!  So what!  It's the same way in any aspect of life.  You're getting married, you're getting a new house, you're getting a new Vette, whatever it is.  How many of you have had your betrothed say, um, I'm backing out, you're WAY too excited about our wedding?  It is freaking natural to be excited about something you have evidence of being good.  "er, yeah, well,  "Uber Meatshield Skankbots of the Realm was suppose to be all that too, and look what happened".  I don't care!  Go cry on the UMSR boards!

And here's a thread you can start, ready?  "Dude!  Some old fanboy in the GW2 forums just compared that game to getting married!"  (First follow up)  What a hype tool, lol  Who's he married to, Roseanne Bahr  lolz

As a response to your thread title, I was simply going to suggest that rather than allowing others to drastically influence your own opinion of the game, you ignore the nonsense spouted by the extremists on either side (fanboys and haters) and come to your own conclusions via observation of actual information about the game.  However, it turns out your thread title is misleading, as the content of your original post has almost nothing to do with the traditional "hype" and "fanboy" talk.  Instead, it's about how you have indulged yourself in actual information about the game to the point of virtual saturation; and now you feel burnt out before you even played the game.

To your thread title, I cannot relate--for I am the forger of my own opinion, and I consider myself capable of discerning outlandish remarks and discarding them.  To the content of your post, however, I can relate.  I even had similar experiences with FF7 and FF8, though I hadn't immersed myself with a wealth of information about FF8 prior to playing it, like I have with GW2.  I simply think FF8 was a far inferior game in many regards.  I suspect you would have reached the same conclusions even if you hadn't read up on FF8 as much as you say you did.  To provide a contrasting scenario, I did read up a ton on FF9 prior to its release, became insanely excited for it, and it went on to become one of my favorite games of all time--if not my favorite game of all time.

I do feel like I am already absurdly familiar with GW2 and the land of Tyria before I've even played the game; and, as a result, I fear that there may not be as much to explore and discover on my own as I would like.  But the only way I can possibly know how true that is will be to play the game and see.  Even if some of that initial wonder and luster is not present, if the game is incredible, I'm sure I will have an incredible time playing it.

And I wouldn't want to miss out on that.
