If you didn't intend to give that implication, elaborate how you think "Felicia being successful" is the "real reason" for hating her.

Simply because people like to tear down celebrities, even minor ones. There is a whole industry built on it... called reality TV. The majority of people out there unfortunately love to see people fail or tearing them down if they are successful. This is not necessarily jealousy, however that can be a cause of it.

Please point out one rational argument on why Felicia Day is detrimental to female gamers. I have heard a lot of venom towards her, but little substance. I have asked already in this thread to be pointed towards the evidence... none has been given. So I have answered your question... now answer mine... Why the hatred towards her... not just dislike or criticism, but out right hatred (as admitted in a previous post).

There simply is not a rational argument to be made, but instead of having a discussion on how to make female gaming better you are here attacking me for no good reason. Bravo.

I agree but what she did was pretty smart.  She wasn't getting anyway in Hollywood so she targeted a certain demographic of males with her very short episodic stuff and managed to be quite successful with it.  Thus, she's created a fanbase and she became indemand.

I give her credit for that.

Maybe it's the idea the media portrays when it comes to female gamers? Maybe it's the sex symbol ideal as a whole? Exploitation is an ugly thing.

Why does the idea of the female gamer have to be one of the exotic entity? When today female gamers are a common thing. I'd argue they always were. To make it worse this goes for males or females, the idea that a gamer can't be attractive, social or have a "life". For many I don't think it has much to do with tearing down celebrity, more so the idea of tearing down a pretense formed by the media and stereotypes.

I hate felicia Day and I think she is overrated. I sincerely believe the only reason why she is half as popular as she is, is because she is a "real" gamer. In any other area she would just be a moderately attractive women.

I have expressed strong negative opinions regarding different subjects in this thread, my main strong dislike (or "hate) is towards the non-teenagers who use expressions such as "OMG Felicia Day!" since they reinforce negative stereotypes which forces me to be very careful with how I use the words "gamer", "geek" and "nerd" in real life.

I want to use the word "gamer" as if it was "game connoisseur"  without having to deal with different stereotypes regarding manners, humor and social prowess.

As for "Felicia Day" herself: I know too little about what is considered to be "good" voice acting to be able to judge whether or not her inclusion significantely increases or decreases the overall quality. I can imagine that a good voice actor is able to quickly convey a feeling/setting in accordance with the director's vision. If that's the case, I would have to first know the director's intentions to be able to judge how good the voice acting was.

I can imagine that people who know more about Felica Day, have better grounds on which they can analyze her underlying motivations and from them judge if she is being dishonest or abusive in any way. Personally, I think artists of any form should have a lot of leeway when it comes to their art.

I do not particularely like any of the media productions in which I've seen her, but I do not automatically blame her for that, since I am under the impression that she is simply acting in those productions.

To reiterate: I have a minor dislike for the productions, which I've seen, in which Felicia Day appeared, but I do strongly dislike non-teenagers going "OMG Felicia Day!".

Wow women can be catty...   I don't get this hate?  What so wrong with her?

I don't know about anyone else but I like her because the Dr. Stranglove and The Guild webserises.   Does it hurt that she is a cute red?  No not really but it also doesn't hurt that she is a good voice actor as well, she did a great job in FO:NV.  Is so bad that the op is happy that he gets to hear her voice in GW then some crappy no one?

Also as for Hale, she is liked because she is a very good VO artist that has done alot of games and even some cartoons.

I dislike her because she is fake. She makes me and those like me look bad because she is pretending to be us and making us look bad. I am not being catty. See my second post. Also you would probably get a better voice from a "no one" she isn't that great of a voice actor, she was only used in both games because she is known from pretending to be a gamer and soliciting responses from those that believe her.

How is she pretending to be a gamer? She's played gamers her entire life, therefore she is a gamer.

I'm a gay male so I don't find her physically attractive, but I still love her, and not because she is a gamer, but because she created the best web-series and was in Buffy.

Jealous people like you need to crawl back under your rock. The OP was happy to have her in GW2, why spoil that for him?

    Go away. Thanks.

On what fact is this based? Second it's okay for you to express your "love" for her yet not okay for someone who feels the opposite to express themeselves?

This is starting to turn into an episode of leave Bittany alone if you ask me.

Honestly, I found it EXTREMELY distasteful that more than once people have mentioned her being insufficiently pretty.

I mean... seriously.  What the fuck?  In large part, this is a matter of taste, and I think it's incredibly unclassy to go up to somebody and tell them 'By the way, that girl you like?  Sort of not really pretty.  Sorry.  Actually, here's a picture of a prettier girl!'

I mean, other than the whole telling people they have bad taste, is that REALLY the image we want to send?  That in order to be a 'girl gamer', you need to be PRETTIER?  ... and also better at games?  (Witness the first picture of a 'prettier better gamer', earlier in this thread)

Some people find her pretty, some don't.  I don't understand why people need to make fun of her for not being pretty enough though.  (Or, alternatively, casting doubts upon people's taste for thinking she's pretty).

Ugh.  As if there aren't too many too pretty people who are famous for being too pretty already.  More average people, thank you.

The final season (sadly) of Eureka starts tonight on ScyFy channel. Felicia is in that series if anyone is interested.

I dunno about the hate... I certainly wouldn't make her drop group in the morning after an all-nighter.

    Oderint, dum metuant.

  • NaralNaral Member UncommonPosts: 748

Hell, I think she is hot because she *doesn't* look like the typical Hollywood trash that gets so much press.

Plus, I like red heads. I think her being a redhead has a lot to do with why so many either like or dislike her as passionately as they do, honestly.

  • ariboersmaariboersma Member Posts: 1,802

I just wanted to thank those that stood up for me. I want to say again that I have no jealousy for the woman.. I dont hate redheads either >.< I see her as a fake and someone exploiting my friends and I take offense to that. I do find it funny no one(other than Distopia for a different reason) bothered comment on my post that pretty much shows I do not have a jealousy for her. Basically I think there are better women out there that deserve the attention because they are better role models in the gaming community. I have also said before that it isn't JUST her... Pico(Curse) and Kaeyi(Youtube) are just as bad. The only possible thing I could be jealous of these women of is their health, hell but that probably makes me jealous of all of you! I could give a rat's ass about fame & fortune.. I have a simple and loved life and I think thats much better.

I will agree that I went a little overboard and the looks comments were out of hand and I appologize for them... I was trying to show that there are better looking gamer chicks out there that worth the adoration... but there is a point that I truely believe and want to point out again. Many of you fawning over her would not look twice at a woman like her in the real world.. that is a sad thing. I was trying to make this point.. not call her plain or ugly.. which I think is how I came across. I think she is given leeway on her looks because she claims to be a gamer and "one of us" when from what I have seen she just isn't. Does that explain my point better?

I really don't care whether you believe me or not but I truely am coming at this like an overprotective sister and not a jealous ex girlfriend. I guess you would have to know me better to truely believe that, but it's true. Anyways.. sorry for stirring up such a large hornets nest in your post itgrowls.. normally we are on the same side of things :)

I honestly think she's very pretty.  I always have and I haven't seen anything to make me feel otherwise.  I also think the woman who's picture you posted is not really attractive, perhaps mostly because she's painted up like a porn star.  That's all a matter of taste and opinion, isn't it?

Second, I don't know why you thik she's faking the gamer thing.  I've seen a video of her playing a game with her brother and she's obviously into it.  You can't fake that.

Finally, I just started at this site and after reading 4 or 5 threads I've come to the conclusion that people here will argue about ANYTHING, and do so with a level of dead seriousness and vitriol usually reserved for religion and politics.  I hope it was a mistaken first impression.

that is pretty accurate.. and the things we do argue about tend to be safer than religion and politics ;)

I think it is kinda sad with all the people jumping on her case simply because she is popular and a gamer. I dont really care that she is a woman or moderately attractive, as I am not attracted to women anyway. But the woman has talent, her shows that she writes / directs are entertaining and she is a decent actor. Personally I think she is quite funny, and obviously knows a thing or two about gaming, although she is obviously more casual than most of the people here.

But hey, its easy to be an armchair director. If you can do a better job of representing nerd culture then go ahead and amaze us already?

I was searching around on google, and I've only found one link that suggests she doesn't play games, and a lot that says she does. :x

I'm a little confused as to why she's supposed to be a bad role model.  I'm glad you backed off on the 'not pretty enough' thing, because that was probably the truly horrible thing you were doing, the rest I'm just not sure what you're talking about, and wish you'd explain yourself better, rather than just giving vague feelings.

Explain?  Maybe you'll convert people to your side!  Just saying 'I think she's fake' isn't really useful though. :/

This is why sex and video games should never mix. I mean think about what we're talking about right now. Whether you think she is pretty or not, doesn't matter. Its still objectification.

its the same problem with finding anything on google.. you find the most popular links and usually it doesn't even apply. I have no source because I cannot remember the links to things I have read( I did try) and most of it is feelings.. watching her.. seeing her in person, reading about her. Part of it is that I can relate better to her being a woman and "know" from that mixture of impression and fact that she is a fake.. and reading the thread I am not the only one.. so I am not crazy =P ok maybe a little bit ;) Bottom line I am a LOUSY debater and it shows here.. I tried to make my point, offered up a carrot(Faye Mata) so I would get less OMG YOUR JUST JEALOUS posts and still got them. This is me pretty much raising the white flag.. I can't offer anything else.

Honestly, this one impresses me less than felicia day does. Ive turned down better. That and i seriously have to question the idea that this girl is genuinely a gamer girl as opposed to a girl that simply plays games. Aside from the fact that this picture is obviously desperate pandering, i have trouble taking this girl seriously as a gamer when she shows such disrespect to all this stuff with the way she just has it strewn around. A real gamer would be appalled at the idea of treating thier games or game systems this way. Especially these older ones i see here. In this picture she is treating them all like crap.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with finding people attractive, you know. :|

... and imagine video games without an aspect of sex.  That'd cut out 95% of the already extremely tiny portion of female characters.  :(

Anyway, you'll notice I wasn't saying "Felicia Day is pretty, dammit!', I was just saying it's not really cool to go around putting somebody down by saying they're not pretty.

Honestly, it's a lot nicer to say 'That person is pretty' than 'that person is not pretty', and if you don't see the difference, or understand how you can say that WITHOUT it involving objectifying a person, I don't know what to tell you. :(

Also, is it okay to objectify Felicia Day for coming across as fairly smart and witty and for having a lot more money than me?

Because I totally find that hot in a woman. :|

Unfortunately, from my point of view, when you offered up the carrot, you totally screwed over your own position. :(

I don't think anybody is attracted to Felicia Day because they think she completely pwns in competitive video gaming, so that whole aspect was sort of pointless...  :)

Also, the fact it's based on 'feelings' makes it... well.  Let's just say less than scientific, haha.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with finding people attractive. I agree 100% But when it is tied into a commodity, like selling a video game, it is wrong. Just because it encapsulates 95% of the genre doesn't make it right. I try to ignore it and just enjoy games but sometimes it is too blatant and I have to pass.
