To their credit, Trion developers got many little technical details surprisingly right. And they have some good ideas (IAs for example). Still not enough to outweigh crucial mistakes: 1) Lore/setting is, quite frankly, garbage. 2) Outdated business model. Sub-based themeparks face extinction and it's been obvious for some time now. 3) Outdated quest system. 4) Class balancing changes look like if all numbers were decided by RNG. Every time. 5) AoEable trash greatly diminished the value of 5-man dungeons. 6) PvP maps are tiny and uninspired.

That reminds me a lot of the usual assumptive posts we get on here:
Why will GW2 be awesome:
'Cos, like, ANET totally are, like, one of us, they'd never let me down, like my father did, ALL MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'
I find it amusing they avoided the biggest argument against GW2 as well, sidesteped with the 'subscription', point, (an argument people hasven't used for years),but then that'd probably ruin this puff piece eh? :P
Speaking of avoiding, the biggest argument against GW2 is what, exactly?
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???

Seriously though, it seems like this article may have only been referring to things that will definitely be in the game. Since the things contained in That Which Must Not Be Named aren't finalized yet, it's kind of hard to support or refute the arguments about it. I'm just guessing at the reasoning behind the article not mentioning it though....

CS/pay2win most probably. However, we need to see what's in the CS before it could possibly be an argument against GW2. If ANet won't directly sell gear or buffs more powerful that those available in game, "pay2win" will be limited to the usual buying in-game currency with real money. You can do it in any sub-based game as well.

these are my pet peeves, not argument against because I'm going to buy bloody game:
Legal RMT. (CS is mostly fine)
PvP Isolated to one zone with predefined battleground, no open world PvP, no dueling.
No player confrontation in PvE zones, you are forced to accept anyone while 'questing'.
Gathering without excitement, personal instanced nodes.
Limited differentiation between same profession, traits are there just for argument sake(hope not).
...
It's too late to speculate about anything else, I need to see this in game while playing, every game has it's own spirit, maybe everything in GW2 will be fine and dandy, really hope for Anet to make this right.

I won't comment on the others but your #5 couldn't be more wrong.
For example through both trait and weapon choice alone you could easily play a Ranger as a more "typical" ranged damage dealer or be a close range melee brawler with a 2H sword.
In all honestly, you will probably be doing both due to ever changing combat conditions and a dynamic, fast pace/flow.

True, I hope I have it right too! All signs from previous beta coverage point to yes, so I'm optimistic.
They pretty much replaced the dual profession system with the weapon swapping + trait lines, hopefully it does create a similar amount of variety and differentiation.

There is no opposite factions in GW2 so open world PvP atm is impossible, mist is too organised/designed. Open world PvP for me is spontaneous player organized battles like Xroads, Astranaar and S.Shore-T.Mill, certainly not ganking. Win / fun is only reward.

There are no healers/tanks! I can’t play my favorite role!
The combat is too hard!
There’s no subscription! It’ll lose money, crash, burn and fail!
Great article over at ZAM discussing the five above mentioned arguements against GW2 and why they may not hold up under closer scrutiny. Definitely worth a read and further discussion.
1. I do like PvP (and I'm not very good at it). I do wish GW2 had open world PvP, but with the Dynamic Event systems, I don't think it was feasible and/or it was a design decision. GW1 had no "open world" per se, but it was heavily focused on instanced PvP. I wonder if such a Dynamic Event mechanic could work with open world PvP while holding onto the philosophy of cooperativeness with your servers' faction. (e.g., no ninjaing, tag-stealing mobs, etc.)
2. There is an endgame, it just isn't incessant raiding. I did love raiding, but the economy of time plays a factor when you're older - not to mention that the whole design of end-game as an excercise in repetetive Skinner Box machinations doesn't make sense. It doesn't feel like fun to the vast majority of people who are doing it (even if they don't want to admit it) because it isn't fun. It's a manufactured system that intentionally creates a psychological addiction.
3. Your favorite role was monochromatic.
4. No. It's just right. It's more challenging than anything you're playing right now MMO-wise.
5. Part 1 is true; and the exact opposite of Part 2 will be true.
In all seriousness, I'm really just trying to see how riled up I can get you folks to see if this is how its going to be in game. Everyone is getting way too bent out of shape over this stuff, just play the game if you want to or don't if you don't. No need to defend anything til your blue in the face. I'll probably play, but not on release.. already preordered TERA and I can't afford more than one game at a time.
So you admit that you were trolling? Interesting.
At any rate, I'm sure that Tera will meet your PvP needs. No, really, I'm sure it will.
Anyway, the Tera forums are over that way.

I might defend GW2 against unintelligent claims but like others I do have worries. None of them are the same as these though lol. Regardless a nice read. Thanks for the post.
So you are admitting the cash shop is not necessary to maintain the game, and the cash shop just exists because ArenaNET is greedy and wants more money, and anyone who buys something from the cash shop is just lining the investers' pockets?
Where'd I say greedy? They're allowing optional things, like costumes, bag slots, character slots, etc. The extra money goes into the game and the future growth (above box sales) as well as the company. Greedy is requiring you to buy the game and then requiring you to pay extra just to play it.
I would pay $5 for a pirate outfit given that I don't have to spend $15 on a sub fee which, in fact, does not guarantee me any new, innovative and regular content. The only exception to this might be Rift- they actually seems to be trying. Every other MMO is busy milking their sub base. My opinion, yes.

Well and play alongside others is worse than compete against dozens of players for a few fucking mobs trying to hit them first than anyone else...
1) Combat...While this may be revolutionary it sounds like combat is going to be a major pain in the @$$....WHile dodging/blocking/etc sound great on paper, I haven't played many games where those mechanics weren't a total pain.... In fact the games I have played that had them (usually single player games) I usually ended up disdaining them and just fighting the way we always have.
2) PVE--IT doesn't sound like the PVE is going to be very good in this game (like it was lame in GW1 also)...WHile PVP is the core of the game, it is still going to need some sort of fun PVE for most of us to stay entertained long term....The game proclaims there is no gear grind, but other than PVP what else is there to keep me interested for very long?
3)World v world RVR--Once again on paper, it sounds great...In practice, I'm not so sure.....I can see alot of lag issues with too many players and overall a sense of total chaos.
4) B2P--I'm leary of buy to play games.....They get their money right away.....Is there incentive for them to keep making the game better, or once they have our money will they just start working on the next expansion to get more money?
4. Can't see the names of enemy players/guilds in WvWvW (doesn't promote rivalries.
I totally agree with this. The most memorable moments I had in WoW was in Vanilla defending Astranaar from a large group of Horde. After my friends and I died repeatedly to a few level 60s (damn you Gnomecrusher!) while we were in our 40s, we remembered those guys and we hunted them down later on in the game. That type of fun cannot happen in GW2's anonomous naming convention for WvWvW.
One more to add: Hurry up and let us rebind the F-keys.

I agree (SS vs TM here), however given the random change of opposing server every 2 weeks it makes little difference for the time being. Maybe later when the best servers always fight one another then they could unblock that and have some personal rivalries.
1) CHAOS, doesn't feel like a MMORPG. (There's just too much of this in every aspect of the game)
Chaos is life, entropy rules all; static environments are boring and feel artificial. I give you points for coming up with an original criticism, even if I find it an odd one.
2) No endgame. (gear/character progression)
It's a game you play from the start to have fun primarily, with progression a secondary consideration. The entire game is end game.
3) Cash Shop ruining the balance for PvE and WvWvW
We don't have any information to support that notion. What we do know points toward a very limited impact, but we'll have to wait and see if this mole hill is even worthy of that moniker.
4) No feel of progression (You are constantly sidekicked and you've unlocked all skills in few hours of gameplay, only traits + getting elite skill open will give you some insight)
In PVE, you can't be side kicked up, only down. This ensures you never outlevel content. Rewards are based on your true level, rather than the scaled level. You most certainly do not unlock all your skills in a few hours. You may unlock your skill slots in a few hours, but it takes skill points to purchase skills for your healing, utility and elite slots. (You get skill points for leveling, but that alone will not allow you to unlock all the skills available for your profession. There are skill point challenges through out the world where you can earn the rest of the skill points to unlock all your skills. For some, this process will extend beyond the point where they have reached the level cap).
5) All classes feel very similar with a twist.
The differences are more than a "twist". They feel very different and mastering one profession will not make you masterful at all professions. Each has there own way of doing things. Everyone may have their own set of tools for handling the challenges the game has to offer, but the nature of those tools can be very different.
Bonus) Very limited single-player experience, playing off-hours is really bad. (most of the good events don't scale below 3-5).
That's just not true. Dynamic Events requiring more than one person are the exception, not the norm. Most scale for 1 to 10 players. The Personal Story mode also provides a complete solo RPG game with in the greater MMO environment. The game encourages cooperative play and eliminates the penalties that many games impose on cooperative efforts, but the game and most of it's content can be played solo from level 1 to 80, if that is how one desires to play the game.
Conclusion for me is that I'll be playing D3/Tera/TSW over this and if I for some reason get extremely bored (which is unlikely) I'll get GW2 from the bargain bin.
Bargain bin isn't very likely and you may find yourself kicking yourself for not just starting with the best value in MMORPG gaming, saving the others for when you want a reminder of what old paradigm games feel ike. (TSW may have some potential to break some of the status quo expectations, but that remains to be seen).
I feel sorry for people who think subscriptions do anything but put money in the publisher's pockets.
Box sales repays the publishers investment. Paying subscriptions you are just throwing money away.
Unless you are talking about Bioware/EA and you just sent a ton of money developing a game. You not only need a ton of box sales but very large subscription base just to turn a profit .
