If your debating TERA... read

raystantzraystantz Final Fantasy XI CorrespondentMember UncommonPosts: 1,237

I'm 30 years old. I have a 4 year old, and I'm married. I've been playing MMO's since UO and before with txt based muds. I've played EVERY AAA title to come out since that time. i'm not going to list them because you know what they are. I've played them all. The ones I spent the most time in, were FFXI, WoW, and EQ2. Everything else only lasted a few weeks/months before I was tired of it.. most of the time I was already ready to quit after the first day or two.

In comes TERA...

I've been looking for something different for a long time (over a year at least) and everything I've come across failed to deliver. My latest attempt SWTOR was just sad.. Nothing like what I was hoping it would be.

TERA met all my expectations in providing a fun immersive experience. I'm not going to write huge paragraphs about why its awesome I'll just cover the key points in a list for you to see quickly.

1. Graphics - 10/10 The graphics are gorgeous. The character models are super detailed, and the Mobs are all fairly unique looking. The Pegasus ride is the most epic flight I've seen in a game. The citys and towns are absolutely stunning.

2. The Combat - This is what sets it apart from the crowd. The combat never gets boring, because every fight is different  You cannot stand still or you will die. No more "rotations" or standing in one spot for hours.

3. The PVP - I've been waiting for this for a long time. The PVP combined with the combat system is some of the funnest pvp ever. I've been pvping all night with random strangers and its a ton of fun. There are no factions so you can really make friends or enemies in the game through PVP. I haven't ganked anybody, its all been even level PVP. My guild was rolling as a group picking off people, and before you know it we'd have a massive war going on between us and other guilds.. reminds me of L2 and shadowbane. There's no rewards for doing it, but its just fun.

4. The PVE - Big Ass Monsters are fun, and enhance the PVP.. the instance I did was pretty fun, and the quests (despite what some have said) is fun. I read the quests, and I usually don't find myself killing the same mob more than twice. Where in other games you get sent back to that same spot 4 or more times when you'd already just been killing that same thing. That and the fact that the quests progress you through the zones, so there's not a ton of running back and forth to the same guy 10x. The cool thing is, grinding is just as viable if you wanted to skip the quests and just grind or do the story quests and just grind. There are repeatable grinding quests you can do that give a crap ton of xp.

5. Leveling speed - Its about as balanced as any other AAA MMO.

6. Mounts - Instant cast!!!!!!! Seriously its such a small thing.. but such a good thing.Plus you get one at 11 so you get right into the meat of things quick.

7. Death Matches, GVG - These are two of the coolest features of the game, and something that brings alot of immersiveness to the game. If you don't know what these are.. look em up.

8. Massive zones - the zones in TERA are huge. Very impressive cities. I got lost in the first one several times, and still don't really know my way around.. this is a good thing!

There's alot more but thats the main stuff..

This game is great for people looking for something that plays like a themepark, but feels like a sandbox. I am totally hooked, and that says alot for me. I haven't played a game for 8 hrs straight in a very long time. I'm almost level 17 and I intend to be 30 before the beta is over with. Can't wait to get to end game. The game does need some additional content, but en masse seems excited about their product and have been snappy with responses to things so far. The only bugs I've encountered were chat bugs, which are minor compared to what I've seen in other beta's No graphics bugs or crashes for me.. but your mileage may vary. I'm in the guild Enigma on Basilisk Crag.. come play with us!

    It was pretty ok.

Glad you found a new passion, Ray.  I know from way back you were looking for something to hook you - sorry we never really got together in Darkfall.  If the wait for GW2 proves to be too much, I'll surely consider TERA.  Thanks for the post.

just curious, why did we need your age and marital status?

  • grimm6thgrimm6th Member Posts: 973

So...basically, you want something different and TERA satisfies that...ok.  Personally, I am less impressed by this game than a certain other game that everyone is going crazy.  I won't bother telling everyone what it is...they know what game I am talking about...well, they should at least.

My point is there are other games coming soon that promise to be unique, and TERA hasn't been on my list since I first tried it out (which was shortly after I first heard about it at a convention).

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

  • RivalenRivalen Member Posts: 503

But, does it have world pvp?

I'm obviously joking and i'm glad this game adds those elements.

I might try it out, but at this point the sub fee is keeping me away.

It's good that you found a game that you enjoy.

I've been playing Tera only since the beta started yesterday, so my in-game experience is rather limited. Having said that, I have different feelings about this product. I've been told that the game gets more "fun" after level 20, so some of my comments may in fact turn out to be incorrect based on limited knowledge of how this game progresses.

    1) Standard themepark leveling experience. Go to the people with the icon above their head, go to mobs, kill, return for reward. Repeat. In the starting zone I was sent three times to kill the same trees for three different quest givers. I did this kind of thing for so many years it's really hard to do now. I want a game that engages me when I first log in, not make me grind to get to the right level for the fun stuff. Again, fun is subjective, some folks like a standard quest system. I don't see how anyone could call this a sandbox.

    2) Graphics vs art style. The game is beautiful and it runs really really well on a mid end computer. The art style will not be for everyone. For example, the Elin just freak me out. My understanding is that there is a cultural context here and I accept that but don't like it. To me, the game looks a lot like Aion. Some folks will like this, others won't.

    3) Combat is described as "real action combat". It's true, you don't tab-target to anything. In order to DPS you have to aim a cursor like in an FPS. It doesn't seem to matter where you aim that cursor as long as it's at the mob you're attacking, or near the mob in the case of AOE. There doesn't appear to be a difference if you hit something in the head or the arm or the leg, I think localized damage would have been interesting. At any rate, I found that every attack just rooted me in place. So I would move, attack, move attack etc just like in, for example, WoW. If a mob got too close I would use my dodge ability to get out of the way. I did not find anything dynamic about this.

    4) Sub fee. I just couldn't see myself paying monthly for this game. You can farm for gold to buy in-game time via chronoscrolls, which I guess people can buy with real money and sell for gold.

IDK about the rest of the stuff, but I would encourage people to play the game before buying it to see if it's a good fit for them. I'm going to log a few more hours today and see what happens, but right now this game is a "pass".

    "Loading screens" are not "instances".
Your personal efforts to troll any game will not, in fact, impact the success or failure of said game.

I downloaded the beta last night. I played for an hour. To me, this is just another hack and slash theme park.  If you like that, you will like Tera.

I love how every review of a game has to come back to GW2...sounds like over compensating..image

Tera claims to be an action mmo yet im stuck in place whenever i perform a dodge maneuver or a skill with a long animation..not very action orientated if you ask me.

That's what I see from watching videos of Tera combat. I hope the game does well though, even though I don't plan to play it. I'm more of a sandbox mmo'er not themepark though.

Just a question, why does BAMs enchance PvP? Are there constant fighting for who gets to take out the BAMs?

  • SinakuSinaku Member UncommonPosts: 552

    I personally love Tera.
I think there are a few things you have to not hate in order to like Tera.
1.You can't hate Korean Games...just cause they are from Korea.
2.Goes with number 1, the Korean/Asian art style. I's beautiful but not for everyone.
3.A lot of people are loving the new combat system(I am included in this).
4.You can't hate a themepark quest system. If you don't like this then don't play.

Well for example my guild and I were about to take out a BAM we had been waiting to spawn. Out of no where right when the BAM spawned another guild appeared and tagged it. We all went outlaw and attacked them as they fought the BAM which turned into more of a GVG then it was a BAM fight.

I love how people viciously attack the game for it's simplistic questing when it's praised in WoW. Granted, I think the questing is the worst part of TERA, but there is so much more to do.

If you play TERA like it's WoW, its going to be just as boring as WoW.

If you get out in the world, PVP, do BAMs, do dungeons, etc... it will be way more fun than WoW ever was/will be.

TERA disappointed me, majorly.  It's devoid of polish and just feels like a generic Korean MMORPG with action combat and a higher development budget.

All these years waiting for it just for disappointment.

    Same for C9.

    Same for RaiderZ.

    Same for The Secret World.

Same for Diablo 3...though I already wasn't expecting a good game since the original creators left Blizzard years ago.

Out of all the action combat MMORPGs I've played, Heroes (Vindictus) has been the smoothest and most enjoyable experience, based on fun factor and controls.

Shame my idiot friend got me banned from it.  *sigh*

I hope Guild Wars 2 doesn't let me down, or that's a huge waste of $60 for more disappointment.

It bored me to tears in the last beta weekend but quite a few people i know are playing it at launch so thought i'd give it a second chance this weekend. Again, i was bored to tears.

I think i've just had my fill of Asian games tbh.

While Tera i agree is a good themepark for casual players i'm pretty curious about this.

Where does Tera feel like a sandbox?

My and martial status is important because it tells you what demographic I come from.

I'm not a teenager or whatever. I'm a mature adult with a paying job. My opinions are going to be different than a 13 year old whose parents are paying for the game..

You have to take those things into account.

As of now I have no plans of playing GW2. No world PVP is a game breaker for me.

I think the simple answer is.. its impossible to please everyone.

People are gonna find faults in EVERYTHING. Some people have legitimate claims, others are just finding things just to be "that guy".

I personally don't care. I enjoy the game and its the first game I've actually enjoyed in a long time.

I don't care if its the 2nd coming of wow, because I really wish those types of players would dissappear from MMO's anyway... we might as well be playing HALO or COD with the way some of them act.

Doesn't matter who you are at all. Nobody cares, and besides not all teenagers get their "mommy" to pay for them. Some of us have jobs too you know.

As for me, after playing the beta of this game, it's absolutely atrocious.

The game adds absolutely NOTHING new at all to the genre of MMOs, it's the same old thing with only ONE new feature - The combat.

Sure it requires you to move around and use "skill," but in all honesty, you'll be doing the same thing as before - kill 10 of these mobs then return to the quest giver, get a party quest and type LFG in chat then go do the instance/boss whatever, it's the same thing we've all seen before and it get's boring fast.

Good for you that you enjoy the game, the rest of us won't be playing it so have fun paying $15 a month for a game that will be dead and lonesome.

    lemme guess GW2?

And it certainly does matter what demographic you play in. a 13 year old's opinion is not the same as a 17 year olds or a 30 year olds.. or a 50 year olds.. thats the whole reason they have demographics.

I'm not sure exactly what your looking for, but if you think a game is going to completely reinvent the genre into something completely new.. your going to be waiting a while.. even WoW didn't do that. GW2 is going to be more of the same as well, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

TBH this game plainly sucks, its nothing mroe than Aion with locked mouse poitner combat and the same asianc huge cats and fluffy monters with no story or interestign feature at all.

Gaming world will lose nothing at all when this get sued and closed.

I award it the MOST UNINSPIRING MMO of the yeear.

    Yawnfest game.

GW2 is overhyped just as much as this game, and probably won't be any good either. What am I looking for? Perhaps the perfect sandbox MMO, with combat similar to games like Dark Souls with that challenge. Mostly the reason why I stay away from MMOs, as I'm sure everyone here does as well.

As for opinions, age doesn't matter at all. You can be 8 years old and form an opinon, and still stick with that opinion for your whole life. Maybe you're just someone who's gone through a bunch of emotional phases throughout your life bringing you to that logic, while others like myself tend to form a valid opinion based on fact and statistics and stick with it, simply because it makes the most sense.
