The real question is would I prefer a dev make a mmo world big for the sake of it or make every part of it useful. Trions dev philosophy of using every resource possible and pushing out content lines up with what I think a P2P mmo is.

How do you compete with hype? How do I convince someone in Jan 2011 that TOR will not be all that great or that GW2 sometime in 2012 will not be this great genre changing mmo? When someone says they are quiting because the ward drobe does not match and you see these same people on mmo champion or the WoW forums pissed about no new content am I supposed to show pity?

The game is still pretty damn stable. Take my word I played Aion for 14 months from launch date. If I saw it going down hill like that you would know. They did make mistakes with pvp balance and class changes, but to me that is in the past. Everyone knew balancing this game would be a complete nightmare. A few devs in a room cannot out think the mmorpg gaming community.

You don't think I laugh my ass off practically everyday at the WoW population pissed they are T plus 5 months on patch 4.3 with another 4 months to go and they are super pissed or super jealous a dev with way smaller resources is just kicking their devs ass? I love it. This crap is great and what I expected from NCSoft West when I threw my support behind them for months and got it thrown back at me with no results.

Trion has pretty much already proved that whatever GW2 does that you guys consider genre changing they will copy in less then 3 months. What will the excuse be then? They are a GW2 clone now. I predict without a doubt Trion already is working on WvW.

I still think its funny that people think that Trion has put out some amazing amount of content.  The overall amount of content pales in comparison to what was done with EQ1's Veil of Alaris, or what EQ2 has released over the past year, and it looks like even LOTRO is getting back on board with reasonable content release pace.

Yes, theyve released more content in the last year than WoW.  Congratulations!  But guess what?  Mists of Pandaria will change that.

The content release pace has alreadly slowed down SIGNIFICANTLY.  Ember Isle was a large patch, that was back in november.  February saw a patch that was mostly a gear rebalancing with very little new content put in.  So you have your first big patch in 5 months, thats adding the first raid in 10 months.  Its time to stop beating your chest over how fast they put content in, because its just not that fast when we know expansion is still a LONG time off.

If Trion's devs were truly kicking Bliazzard's ass they wouldnt be down to 16 servers from 58.  If the game and its updates were so great you wouldnt have to use the excuse of 'every game opens too many servers at launch' (while ignoring that WoW and LOTRO did not), because surely with the massive pushes they made to get people to try their game over the last 12 months they should be growing not shrinking.

The game, for most people, is not that good.  The world's (lack of) size and the game's lack of soul are too very large reasons.  And Rift is going the opposite direction.  Instead of adding new dungeons, they make master modes.  Instead of creating new content, they do IAs in existing zones.  Chronicles?  same places youve been before.  Its trying to pack 40 shoes into a shoebox instead of realizing that a shoebox should hold 2 shoes to seem natural.

And no, Trion doesnt get the excuse of being some small company and they are doing great with limited resources.  Their budget was bigger than Everquest 2 (20-25mill) and Aion (18 mill) COMBINED.  First MMO?  yes.  Low budget?  far from it.

I get that there are plenty of people that like Rift for what it is.  Thats fine, its good that there are games for various preferences out there.  But the chest beating about Trion being so spectacular with their content, and gloating how they are so much better than Blizzard, at this point is just silly, especially gven the end results.

And you asked how can you compete against hype?  That answer is:  with a quality product.

Save the money, levels 1-20 are about as interesting as the game gets.

Really last I saw people preeching Rifts death from a game called Star Wars. Remember all the people saying that TOR was the next WoW and all the conditions were there.

Just like TOR I see GW2 launching to a shit ton of hype and the game not even coming close to the stupid amount of hype it has generated. Get to end game in GW2 as a full progression pve guild and tell me WTF there is to do. If you find something let me know because I am still waiting.

If TOR taught me one thing is utterly pointless to argue with fanbois preeching a games death because you can hide behind the hype. After it releases and the reality sets in that the bar was set to high yet again I will be left laughing my ass off.

On the server thing. Have you bothered to look at a WoW server status lately? Yeah they have a lot of medium servers, but if you ever played WoW they are very generous with what they label medium trust me. WoW has more low pop servers then TOR + Aion + Rift combined.

I've started to play the game few days ago and I kinda like it... It's fun and fast to pick up, for now, so I probably will continue my adventure and see how it goes next. :)

It looks like it's a good game when I compare it to my previous mmorpgs which I've played but I'll see it when I play more than just a few days :D

    ...The REAL question is...

Has this person ever come back to this thread since they posted the above comment?

It really is a good game if you enjoy challenging raids.  I'm also a fan of Trion so i have faith they're in it for the long haul.  Now, i haven't played in 3 month but it has nothing to do with the game itself and more to do with myself and time constraints.

Also, Puremallace, ahhhh. I remember you from Aionsource going back a few years. I see not a lot has changed. You're consistent if anything i suppose.

Your WoW jealousy doesnt help your cause for Rift.  Just let it go.

Yes, but there is a big difference. between how WOW handles it's servers and Rift. Rift is very concerend with healthy server populations that's why all NA servers are well populated. Yeah, they shut down many but they keep the remining healthy. How many could WoW get rid of if they did what Trion did and allowed for open server transfers? I'd be willing to bet they could reduce their overall server count by half to two thirds if they wanted all the servers to be well populated. But what kind of message would that send? No we can't have that can we?

If you play on a PvP server, you definitely want to roll a rogue because permastealth is just stupidly powerful as both a defensive AND an offensive tool. For a PvE server cleric is probably the best choice because you can play any role.

Warrior is okay if you like melee. Mage is... well, not really gimped... but annoyingly gear-dependent. Also mage suffers from various design oversights (Pyro DPS heavily depends on being able to stand still, for example).

MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).
