A game is a WoW clone when its a bland copy of the concepts of WoW, including copying the bad stuff, like RvR, soulbound everything, racial limits for classes, instancing all dungeons, endgame is raiding and nothing else, and so on.
the term "clone" gets tossed around loosely here. a true clone is 100%. people say...if it plays like it, its a clone, if it looks like it, its a clone. if its easy, its a wow clone.
the most blatent clone i've seen lately is torchlight. it looks like wow and plays like diablo
in reality tho, people that dont like a game will call it a clone. people that like it will say "it has similarities"
For these newbs it only needs user interface that looks the same and its a clone. So id say thats like 10% or less. I mean its ridiculous, all game i have shown to my friends who play/played wow goes "oh they copied the ui from wow" and then its a clone. Such a trolls or retards... dunno but lol.
But for me all 100% because then it would be real clone. And then there would be law issues and shit.
Only "clone" is the whole genre itself. Because nowdays it is so easy to implement stuff into the games... Some new mmorpg invents something really cool and innovative and then every other game borrows it and changes abit and its theirs.
the best way to kill a troll is to FLAME ON! ...or with acid...
Could you pass me the website again where they give the percuentual values of different aspects? I'm a little lost in my calculating, can't seem to remember if those dwarfy beards was supposed to add 0.01 or 0.001 haHA! A matter not to be ignored, as you and I both know it is far to important to just let sail by or just carelessly add one or the other, this is what made SWG get cancelled afterall, the value of dwarfly beards. So i was thinking about the wellknown fact of LOTRO's deep Sixty's and the lol atrocious mistake we seem to have made on the area of monster play, you see we should have played it, and not just say like HA they saw faction vs faction warfare and simply add the usual 10,7 NO its apperantly a outside Experience ( like that time in the field by the campfire when Mark brought those stamps and we ... ) so i would in that certain case definitly go for a slight reduction argumented by originality ( -4,9 usual) which some people actually did but they forgot to remove the 10,7 so i think its fair to say lotro has to be calculated again; as for the dwarfy beards question i'm ending on 53.59 or 53.599, which you know as marketingspecialist is a big Whoop Whoop in the publiceye due to brain activity suggesting a cheaper count by the larger number thus the only logical conclussion to make is that Turbine has been cheating.
I don't compare every single MMO to WoW. That's just silly. Sure some may be similar, but WoW is similar to those that came before it, so this tired arguement is invalid.
They are all MMOs, people! There is bound to be a similar baseline feature set.

I've printed out this post so that I can Hi5 it in real life.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
It is of course subjective and my opinion depends on me not liking those features at all. And since a good game not having those features is very important from my POV it is close to 100%. If I have to endure those features the rest of the game will not make much difference. I will not enjoy it.
There's not a set percentage just a few things have to be at least nearly identical for me to call something a wow clone and that is the quest based leveling system and the endgame gear treadmill in raids after that, this is the essence of world of warcraft and if this essence is the same within another game regardless if it has action combat or voiced over quests it will still feel like a clone to me.
Keep in mind that there are tons of third person hotbar based RPGs I wouldn't consider a WoW clone, but in that article for TESO I saw the words "Classes, Instaces, and Heroics" Sorry but that's a WoW clone. They aren't even stealing good features from MMOs, they actually think people want heroics.
Currently playing - FF14ARR Previous games - SWG, World of Warcraft, ShadowBane, Warhammer, Age of Conan, Darkfall, Planetside Asheron's Call, Everquest, Everquest 2, Too many.
Wow is also famous for its engaging 3 sided large scale world pvp, huge open raids for everyone to pile on, open dungeons & interesting and meaningful crafting

im sorry but wow is a clone itself :S
wow clone:
- tab target combat
- fast levelling
- easy
- lfg, lots of fast travel
- fixed single class system
- quest hubs--world split up into level appropriate zones
- quest based levelling: gear, coin and exp rewards
- mundane repetitve kill x of y quests
- bound items: no player economy
- crafted items weaker than loot items, crafting ussually afterthought
- instance focussed: raids, dungeons, battlegrounds; open world largely unused
- gear grind through numerous tiers-- purchase with tokens/rep earnt in instanced pvp/pve
- 2 faction

I was just going to post something similar but you beat me to it!
1. Quest based leveling.
2. Quest hubs
3. On rails design.
4. Instances. PvE and PvP.
1+2+3+4 = WoW clone!

Well, for those of us who say that (I don't know about all), if you'd accept what we mean by the term "WoW clone", you'd understand what we mean.
Then you wouldn't be saying we don't know our a** from our elbows, and you wouldn't be confusing your own a** with your mouth out of which you speak.
Once upon a time....
Depends who you talk to.

Only thing that makes a WOW clone is being to easy with quest Hubs and to many instances. And don't forget end game is all about gear grinding.
Even Vanilla WOW isn't a WOW clone...Go figure?
In the eyes of thousands, if the game has graphics; it's a wow clone.
Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
Playing - PS2, AoW, GW2
In a recent poll of online gamers 99.999% of Trolls agreed that if it is an MMO it is a WoW Clone.
For me it would be the art style, the easy play/quest system and the 2 faction thing. Oh and the lame thing they call pvp, the FPS style stuff.
