What to expect in Nov 05
(This is not fact, but based on my observation so far)
DnL will be released.
DnL will have almost no advertising or hype (all hype so far has been generated by the community, and this will continue to be the case)
DnL will be downloadable only in the first few months (no store sales or marketing)
Some features will be available at release, some will be introduced at a latter date. The game will not be complete. (this is due to the scope of the game being so huge)
It is expected that only members of the current community will even attempt to play DnL at first.
It is expected that those who develop the player content and populate the game initially will be current fans of the game.
Fans of the game will be more interested in allowing and helping the game develop to maturity.
At a latter date (2006) the general gaming community will be introduced to DnL through advertising and store sales. But only at a time when most features are present and matured through the activity of early adopters
This is to allow a "soft" release, so as to allow the game time to develop all its ambitious features without having too many pressures put on it by the "general" gaming community and press.
This will be a small DnL community based release only.
PS: This is how I see things at this time... take it or leave it
Comments
This will also very much depend on the financial backup the developers have.
It might be a good idea t give the game some time to "grow" before starting a huge ad-campaign, but one the other hand I think the developers will need some cash income soon.
So will the game be a free download and no monthly charge while they get it up to speed ?
edit in regard to the previous post, I certainly hope that is not the case. I would think that game companies have learned that lesson by now. Horizons and Saga of Ryzom are still struggling, and Mourning did not last a month on the theory of shove it out the door whether it is ready or not, they will pay. It would be a shame to see DnL suffer the same fate.

As far as I have been able to understand the game will be cheap, far cheaper than in store (they will have to charge something or everyone looking for a freeby will be playing, not just the fans). As far as monthly sub goes, I would expect after 1 to 3 months to be paying a sub, DnL will need some basic income stream if it is to pay for maintance and development. When DnL is eventually open to the general public via stores expect normal retail prices.
Wait until next year if you what a near complete game... if you don't mind then jump right in and be the first to set things up... hope this helps
nice done, you may be true, but Dnl will most likely in nov have a normal retail price and a normal monthly fee cost. Just the way to get the game is only availble trought website. And perhaps something special or only for the current (forum) community
What to Expect in November 2006
After a resounding failure to attract any players, subscriptions for DnL sit at around and under 10k.
In an attempt to recoupe money's invested, the DnL license is sold to SOE so that they may hold the rights to single server and large world technology. More players leave in Droves.
Another big promise MMO goes down the tubes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Personaly, I don't feel there is any reason and or excuse for any MMO to be half heartidly released, why alienate the player base and community in the first place ? It just doesn't make any sense to me.
By far my favorite quote from the recent Devchat would be:
"The game will be released in November because our first objective will be fulfilled in November: a first version of Dark and Light that will allow the most faithful members of our community to be part of the legend of Ganareth, and to add their name to the background.
We always said that the final goal of DnL was to allow players to put a hand on the game, to have complete freedom, and to be part of the construction of Ganareth. This is what we will offer to you in November 2005.The game will be released in November because our first objective will be fulfilled in November: a first version of Dark and Light that will allow the most faithful members of our community to be part of the legend of Ganareth, and to add their name to the background.

That to me is scary, period. Do these people have any idea what the mmorpg community is like, have they not studied what happens to similar games and company's that do this to players ? I'm sorry but players just do not accept paying for half finished products and if anything all this does is set a presidence for what the community can expect from this game and it's development team in the future. Which is quite unfortunate.

lol 40% is a joke. more like 15% of the game will be released i bet
Oh my. Imagine that. 15% eh? So you really think that it is that many YEARS away from release huh? 4 years or so in production now and uhhh 15% done... hmm by your basis then it should be ready in about 24 more years or so just doing simple math.
I'll bet you anything that DnL releases long before the year 2030, and that it will be way more then 15% complete at launch time.

One of my co workers saw it at this years E3 that was 3 months ago. The guy running the demo could barely get it to run , the combat was not working, the graphics sucked even on the companies demo machine, it was buggy and basically just a empty world.
Dream on fanboys and girls this game will flop like a fish on land if they insist on launching in another 2 months.

Oh you are missing quite a few things here. For one thing I am not subscribed to any MMO at the moment, nor am I paying more than casual attention to any of the ones in development. Second of all this is a discussion forum which the last time I looked meant that people of differing opinions can say pretty much what they want as long as they stay within the forum guide lines.
So far I have only quoted what a co worker who was at E3 this year reported, I have one online friend who says he is in beta that has pretty much told me that it is in trouble also. I won't say much about that because I cannot say for sure that the guy is or is not in beta. then there have been several posts over the web similar to the one that started this thread. However there is also the fact that the game did not exactly impress a whole lot of other people at E3 this year. Add in that the game is now about 2 and a half months from release, how many previews have you read on the major game sites?
But yes I do trash the game quite a bit, however it is not out of spite. It is because I would love to see the Devs make a decision not release the game before it is ready. I was really hoping the game might be one which would be a EQ/WoW killer. I for one am tired of dumbed down MMORPGS and would really like to see one with some innovative ideas make it to publish. However every time one does it seems to be a premature release. Horizons and Saga of Ryzom both suffered this fate. Mourning was a joke, and now from all indicators it looks like DnL is determined to commit suicide by early release also.
So if you want to call me a troll then feel free, what I am hoping for is that there is that one in a million chance that maybe the devs will delay release until the game is ready. So if you do not like my posts then don't read them, because I plan on preaching my Don't release until it is ready sermon right up to release day.

i have heard from ppl that are in beta i wont name anything that yes it is buggy and stuff but thats whys it still in beta thats why its been pushed back and if its still buggy by november it will be pushed back again simple as that then i heard from others its a good game nothin special but good im not gonna name any1 dont want them in trouble but anyways i understand where your commin from now i want DnL to be the game of em all too and frankly i doubt it myself but still will try no matter what others tell me why cause i always believe do it yourself dont listen to others exp things for yourself can go a long way

Im kinda interested in trying this game lot things sound good if they can actually do them like hyped. Anyway is this game gonna be released for certain this november ?
Well What I am expecting is that the game will have alot of features already more than most other mmos out now, and this is a good thing I think it is a matter if they pull the basics off well is whether or not the game will be good at release.
so what I am saying is that if they pull of pvp good, crafting at least better that wow, questing at least as good as wow, travel at least as good as wow, or equal any thing else that wow pulled of well it will be a very fun longlasting game.
As long as you have your wish book out wish for , balanced classes, a variety of mobs, no lag, interesting areas to explore, good combat, a good balance between loot and crafted items.. mmm did I miss anything?
I miss DAoC
Well, you probaly are missing somthing, but as far as thinking of what they are going to succeed at this is my oppinion
They will succeed in these areas: PvP, Little to no lag (it seems most of the development process was spent on this) economy, PvE, interesting areas, environment graphics, item balance
They will be average in these areas: Making Crafting interesting, easy travel, variety of mobs, combat, Armor Graphics, loot balanced, character customization
They will be bad at these: class balancing(although will be fixed within a few weeks as with most mmos), character models, monster models.
This is just what it seems to me that they will succeed and fail at. Although I will be happy if they at least comply with this+fix it over the next few months after release I will be very happy and I am sure many of you ppl would be as well.
http://www.realmsofkrel.com
its coming back.. actually never left to begin with.. thats the only pvp mmo worth followin soon now they got the goods and investor to finish it properly.
N' supposadely everyone who pre ordered back than gets a free box set and guranteed into testing..
Ohhh my. {coughs} Give us a damn break already with this endless, mindless savage Mourning fanboy garbage already, will ya?
Seriously, you sound like a foaming at the mouth "Spice girls" fanboy ranting about how good they are, how they are coming back, and are the best that ever were.
Enough of this nonsense please? Especially on a DnL forum board... sheeesh. Now I know that Mourning is such a great game and all that they currently don't even have a forum board for you, but please spare us your non-stop fanboyism over a dead, hopeless mmo that likely won't ever make a wart on the butt of any part of DnL.
- Zaxx
how do you know the game is going to be released 40% done? you havent even played it..i recommend waiting to see what happens ... and when DnL cripples crappy games such as WoW and EQ2 we shall see which community laughs the last laugh
I don't know for a fact that it is 40% or 30 % or 99%. What I do know is that from what I have heard and read recently some of which came directly from the Devs that the game will be darn lucky to get 5k subscribers let alone 500k. I have also heard quite a few other things from a couple of beta testers that I won't reveal on here because I cannot confirm for a fact that these people are actually testers or not and also that the Devs still have almost 2 months to get these problems straightened out.
What I am going to do is hold onto my money until after the NDA is dropped and then make a decision on whether to purchase or not. You go right ahead and do whatever you want. to do. If you think the game is going to be great and fantastic then go on and send them your credit info on it's official release day, I will sit back and watch the boards and see what happens. I will either order the game or not, a week or a month after release and I am sure that the game is or is not worth my time and money.
I still chuckle every time someone mentions Mourning and I think of the fools who sent them money. So if you really think this game will succeed go for it, I have a friend who loves Saga of Ryzom and keeps predicting that any day everyone bored with WoW is going to discover what a great game SoR is. Every game has it's fanbois, I used to be one for this game. Now I am more of a casual observer.
I miss DAoC
Actually bud, your friend who likes Saga of Ryzom isn't that crazy. IMO Saga is a better game then is WoW.
It doesn't have near the populations, but regardless, it is very well produced and is an mmo oozing quality out of every seam. It is nothing at all like "Mourning" which oozed nothing but poop and bad coding out of every seam. And you're friend may not be so far off with his prediction. I have played SoR and WoW, and play neither currently due to real life and time constraints... but when countless players become bored of WoW after its super fast leveling, they may indeed look for something with just as pretty graphics and a deeper mmo to delve into. SoR is a beautiful game, and with its ultra-awesome looking upcoming expansion
"Ring of Ryzom" which let players own and build their own part of the world.... anything is possible.

What DnL does is something that not many game companies do, THEY'RE BEING HONEST, and because of that many here freak out and think the game will be release half complete.
DnL has been in development for years and I'm pretty sure it is fairly complete. Most MMORPGs today get released with many bugs and many features unimplemented but no one really admits that.
Only way to find out how complete the game really is is to play it in November 2005. I believe that the developers are smart enough to know what happens if the game is released with very little content.
