I don't know about making this an MMO, part of the appeal for me was the total freedom single player allowed me.  I guess we'll see, just don't pull a bioware.

Nevermind the fact it's rumored to use same engine as SWTOR.

    ehm... ZeniMax Online Studios

    Zenimax OWNS Bethesda

Zenimax Online Studios and Bethesda are both different studios for same company.

Zenimax Online Studios are led by former DAoC producer and his team...why they decided to form new studio for it rather than have Bethesda do it, I dunno.

I only played morrowind, so my views could be outdated...

But one thing that comes to mind about story and character development is "ranks", "politics" and "empire". So how would they implement these things in a MMORPG?

Here is just my guess on how it can be done: each NPC aims high, so every official want to become prime minister and every other group have such kind of ambition among themselves as well. To realize those ambitions they need help (from players) in getting skills, favors, connetions and in removing competitors or bosses (one way or another). So players are getting quests and those quests change things one way or another - it can change prices or balance between powers or bring promotion to NPCs. So you can grind your skills and apply them in changing the world. And at some point empire can even be broken into pieces, when noble houses get too much authority and autonomy, while Imperial Court getting too corrupt.

I've loved Elder Scrolls from way back in the Daggerfall days.. but I don't have high hopes for an MMO based in this setting. Tons of heroes all over the place? Wouldn't be Elder Scrolls anymore... it's the loneliness and intimate/personal affect on the world that makes them so good.

This could ruin a well established RPG giant. I hope I'm wrong though, I really do.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

And people though SWTOR and GW2 hype was bad. I'd like to say that I won't hype the shit out of it but... c'mon Elder Scrolls with 3 faction PvP!!!

Its not being made by a third party.. Zenimax Online Studios is a subsidiary of ZeniMax Media group, Besthesda Softworks is a subsidiary of the same company.

Interesting comment "without the shoddy help of a third-party add-on". It was only the third party addons that made the Bethesda games even remotely playable. More bug infested releases I have yet to see from any company, even MS were never that bad.

How will be possible run TES in the hero engine? I dont see how this will have fights like DAOC whit the hero engine......

    Well,

I have no idea if TESO will be any good....one thing I can say for certain...I would have LOVED to be a fly on the wall in the corner office in EA/Bioware when they read the anouncement about this.... with everything else they have to worry about, including GW2 launch... I can see it now..

I was excited until I saw "Zenimax Online Studios is making the game"...then I took an arrow to the knee.

    Bethesda = quality games

Zenimax = an almost 5 year old company that hasnt made any games

This was a mistake on the part of Bethesda

SWTOR hype was bad, and we just survived it lately,

GW2 hype is even worse and we dont now yet, if we will survive this hype unscathed.

But ESO will become worst case. i am frightened to death ....

While it is Elder Scrolls and all the genre doesn't need another fantasy-themed game. I can forsee this going the way of WAR40K.

    Umm...

Party 1, parent company Zenimax media

    Party 2, Bethesda...

    Party 3, Zenimax Studios

A subsidiary is not part of other subsidiaries..Bethesda is located in Rockville Maryland. Zenimax studios is located in IRELAND. The only tie between them is who owns them, what it basically means is that someone in a company got an idea to make an online game and they forced Bethesda to hand over rights to allow it to happen...which is why they are not making it themselves, they didnt think it was a good idea. Need I remind you of Fallout Online, Bethesda went to COURT to maintain control over it.

Hard to comment on something as nebulous as this game currently is.  Hopefully the design team looks at what works and what does not in the current genre.

Just because a different studio is making it doesnt mean it will be bad.  I think its great news that the head of Zenimax studio is a developer from DAOC.  I think it bodes well that the only information about the game they've released so far is the 3 faction system, too.  And that Zenimax has been a studio for 5 years without making any games?  Hell they've probably been working on this game.  We may really see it in 2013.

The very first MMO ever made (Ultima Online) was a spin off of Ultima.

On my checklist of things I want from this game is a modding tool hat will allow people to make client side modifications that won't effect the overall balanceo f the game.  Being able to make a mod using a tool instead of having to use coding (ala Blizzard) would be amazing.

This has fail written all over it, I don't see this working out in any way shape or form.  The game was built to be a single player game, putting it into an online world just isn't going to work.  Will have to see what direction they plan on taking it and see where it goes from there.

Just looks like a clever way of taking the blame away from bethesda is they mess up to me.. unlike whats happened/happening to Bioware.

Yeah and we saw how well they did on FF14. That company destroyed their reputation thanks to trying to cash in. Bioware completely destroyed their reputation also.

But none of the traditional solo RPGS have sold so many copys as Skyrim and zenimax is a LONGTERM partner with Bethesda and by far one BEST compare to EA/bioware or Square/enix.

Yeah, but here's the elephant in the room that no ones wants to talk about:  Bethesday releases buggy games.

With a single player game, which has a huge and creative modding community to pick up the slack, a messy release is tolerable.  With MMOs, it's not -- at least not the level of the problems that Beth games are prone to seeing at release.  Not to mention, Beth hasn't been exactly quick off the blocks to make fixes to Skyrim, nor were they particularly forthcoming in even acknowledging them.  That kind of thing won't fly very far with the MMO community, where people most often end up paying a subscription fee while they wait for bug fixes to be made.

Frankly, I would have preferred another SP or better, a multiplayer game from them instead of an MMO.  They don't seem like a company well-suited to the medium.

This is true of Bethesda, however I have no issue with them still using an able community to fix the issues and endorse the mods. If more MMO companies would open the doors to this concept, we might find games like SWTOR more enjoyable for us as individuals.

Mods do not bother me and bug fixes are welcomed by me. I don't care if the developer or the community gets it done, I am just happy that it gets done.

Imagine your favorite MMOs having the fixes created by the community and obviously approved by the developer. This would be the definition of getting @#$% done. Open the doors, fix my MMOs instead of leaving broken content in the game for ages. Nothing turns me off of a game quicker than broken quests and random buggy stuff that remains in the game for months or even years.

Yes Skyrim has bugs and faults but I can always save my game fully aware of what could and does happen. MMOs do not allow this of course so if the community contributes to the fixes then I say go for it. Happy days ahead for me at least.

this is the biggest news in MMO gaming ever. Haters can go pound sand this game will wipe the floor. You have your themeparks now lets move the genre forward.

Few issues I see them facing.

    1. Bugs. TES games tend to have tons of bugs, but we put up with them because we get so much single player goodness.  In an MMO, it just won't fly, hell people raise hell if their ability is 2% less effective than someone elses.

    2. Combat in Elder Scrolls game. I can't remember the last time someone said, "man the combat is so good!" It's pretty bad. It's hack'n'slash with a pause screen to switch skills. Ugh. So far down the food chain these days it's not even funny. People love these games for open-ended questing and lore.

    3. Competition. Very few companies make sweeping single player epics these days. So they're near the top (if not the top to some) of the pile. TITAN might be announced any time, and we know that blizzard has the experience, resources, knowledge, fanbase, and polish to bring the next great MMO to life. Who knows the scope they will reach, but I'm betting it'll be an amalgamation of every good idea over the last decade (kinda like WoW was).

Sure if you ignore the fact that Bethesda revoked the rights to make Fallout Online away from the company make it to make sure they didnt wreck the series...even taking them to court to do it...and then nixing the game.

Yeah, be sure to forget about that.

Bethesda had no choice, the parent company gave the rights to another part of the company, Bethesda cant do a thing about it.

    Corporatism at its finest.
