I played Runescape for years. Literally. Since the 3rd month it was out. It wasn't my first MMO, but it was one of my first. For such a graphically simple game, I loved it. And I still love the game. It's the community I hate. I havn't played for almost a year because of the amount of assholes on RS (though trust me, it got bad long before that). Members or not, I couldn't sustain a conversation with anyone in that game, nor have any real fun. I'd try to organize stuff, but people simply didn't care. Runescape turned into another Counter-Strike for me: great game played by a bunch of losers.
Anyway, I've tried most of the MMOs (Anarchy Online, City of Heroes, Dark Age of Camelot, Guild Wars, Everquest, Knight Online, World of Warcraft, The Matrix Online, Planetside, Ragnarok, RYL, Shadowbane, Star Wars Galaxies, Ultima Online, the list goes on) and very few of them appealed to me (Runescape was one of the few). It really is too bad it got flooded by morons, it was an incredible game in the beginning...
btw, I figured after mentioning all those games I should mention what I really liked and what I really didn't based on both the gameplay and at least my encounters with the people playing: Impressive games: Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, Planetside Horrible games: Everquest, The Matrix Online, Anarchy Online (please don't start bashing me Everquest fanboys, you're just gonna reinforce the reason I hate the game farther into my brain)
I've had very sporadic exposure to RS since it was in beta. To it's credit, everything that makes a MMORPG are here. It's like UO with really crappy 3D graphics. I takes more than bad graphics to make me stay away from the game though.
The main reasons I think people hate it are:
1) It's ugly. Most people get bored just looking at it. I'm not one of those people since I still play Nethack and Zork from time to time. Some people are just that shallow though.
2) It's free (mostly). There are some people that think price = quality. It doesn't. But that fact doesn't stop shallow fucknuts from thinking that way.
3) Large numbers of people already hate it. If 20 people told you a game sucked, would you play it? In the case of RS, several thousands of people bear witness to the suction every time the game is mentioned. It was a rare day in Gamestop that I met someone who actually admitted, live and in public, that he actually PAID $5 a month to play RuneScape's "exclusive" content. I don't think that gentleman will be making that same mistake again anytime soon.
4) And most importantly!! The community is filled to bursting with little kids playing it on the schools library computer. It's bad enough that they act like punks, but they just don't get it. The game is chock full of crafting and quests that don't require you kill anything at all and these little hellspawn are out killing anything that moves. They were actually killing cows that were totally non-aggressive and not fighting back!! WTF?!!
I have no doubt in my mind that people could really get to dig a graphical MUD that they could play through their web browser or with Jumpstart. However, the game(s) are going to have to be run more like a MUD and administrated just as diligently. RuneScape is like a cut-rate online daycare center. The kids over run the place, ruin everything and there's no one there to watch them. I really don't like setting up velvet ropes, but access control can act as damage control when it comes to an online community.
Originally posted by runescapefan I know you all hate runescape but i have to speak for it again i wanna ask one question if you do or did play what lvl where you and when was the last time you played

I never understood why runescape had a player base. There are many other free games that have been around longer and are more exciting or story based.
/shrug
but MUDs and such have more to offer for no cost IMO

For me once you hit the grind stage, or end game plateu, and such community makes or breaks the game.
