That doesn't really matter. In the end people who spend real money will be the winners.
There will be an easy way of getting both huge amount of gems and gold by using real money. If you don't spend real money you will be far behind the people who do spend real money no matter what you do.
This is worse than pay per month, glad I was never really into this game from the start.

I did feel like I was "winning" while wearing the pirate outfit, especially because it had abilities for the weapon's bar like summoning a parrot.
Is this what people mean when they say GW2 is P2W?

I agree it's absurd to call any of the items Pay to Win, but the Mystic Chest (though it should be noted that keys DO drop in game) provide clear bonuses such as Regeneration for 10 minutes and -10% damage reduction. These are also PvE only bonuses as they don't work in Conquest or WvWvW. Boosts are also clear advantages, though again it's absurd to even want said advantages in a game where progression rate isn't specifically hindered and you'll have plenty of karma, no need to level due to scaling down in areas, and lots of other reasons not to buy boosts.
Yes, you can buy gems with gold, but you can also buy gold with gems. That's one of the main gripes I have with the cash shop. Gold actually is valuable in this game. Using it as an agruement to support the cash shop isn't a good idea when the same agruement can be used AGAINST the cash shop.
You can actually get everything from the cash shop with in-game gold. Fact
Fact. You can buy Gems with in-game gold.
How hard is this to understand?
Cant wait to sell noobs my gems! You know market will be controlled by a few peoples who put real money in it.
GEMS ARE NOT TRADEABLE TO OTHER PLAYERS
Well you might want to chech up on that.
u can buy gems with gold but u cant get URS gems and sell directly to a player setting UR OWN price on it.
From what you wrote I thought you meant there is no way to sell to others, didn't know you only meant you can't sell directly .
Yup, i said that cause many people think gems will make the game p2w so they can buy tons of gems and be freaking rich but the thing is that the more people buy gems the less its value in gold will be.
I really hate p2w games and gw2 isnt like that so sometimes i get carried away when people say things like "market will be controlled by a few peoples who put real money in it."
i just hope people understand that and give gw2 a try

I really like the idea of being able to buy cash shop currency with in game currency. However, from everything people have been saying, I don't see how this is going to work out in GW2 in practice. People have been saying that one of the reasons it can't be considered pay to win is because in-game gold doesn't get you much if any advantage for those interested in selling gems for gold. This is a double-edged sword for those interested in buying gems for gold though. If there's not much if afny advantage to having large sums of gold, where is the incentive to even buy gems to sell for gold? If it isn't worthwhile enough, then people will be less inclinded to buy gems to sell for gold and then the price of gems will inflate and it will cost more gold to buy the gems. On the other hand if they make gold give an advantage in game then you are entering pay 2 win territory and people will need the gold themselves and have less to spend on gems, which will deflate the value of gems. As it stands right now from the people posting on the forums it doesn't seem like gold does enough that would warrant someone buying gems to sell them for gold.

People like cosmetics more than you think. Many cosmetics will be available for gold on the auction house through crafting.
You can't buy everything with gems. Actually, looking at the gem store so far, you can buy very little of what appears in game.
Edit: Really, people spend gold on auction houses all the time to get things that do not give them an advantage. Not everyone is thinking, "what will give me an advantage?" Sometimes people are thinking, "I want a fluffy pet that I can slap around with emotes."

How about this fact.
All the Gem's that are for sale for gold are supplied by other people hoping to trade their real money for Gold so Anet and NCSoft could care less where you buy your Gems because someone somewhere paid real money for them. In fact if there is a broker transaction fee (I don't know for sure) than it's even better for Anet because it diminishes the value of the Gem's as they get a cut of the transaction.
Gold will matter in GW2 just like it has in every other MMO ever released and people will be willing to trade real world money for it via the Gem trade.
Some people don't have a issue with all this and thats fine but don't trivalize those that do.
So am I allowed to sell gold for dollars myself? Am I allowed to buy gems with gold I farmed and then sell those for real world cash at a cheaper price than Anet? Or will I get a ban because Anet wants to be the only one who can sell an in game currency for real world money? Gems are a currency, because they have value. Anyone notice the transmutation stones weren't anywhere BUT the shop anymore? Bag slots, bank space slots, perfect salvages and even the costumes in the shop have value.
Fact. Buying an in game currency with real world money was cheating in almost every MMORPG and Online game before this.
Fact. Arenanet has become the RMT themselves.
Fact. Cheating via buying in game currency has not been removed by the gem system.

Fact: You have more gold than me. Aweosme. what are you going to do with it? Get better gear? Oh wait this isn't wow. The difference in power between tiers of gear is FAR less exponential than in most MMOs.
Fact: You can buy plans for siege gear with gold...wait gotta have the supply too.
No, I'm not belittling the fact you think RMT is wrong.
RMT was considerd wrong for two reasons
1) People that used it were often able to use their heaps of gold to sit like lords over everyone else due to having the best gear, etc.
2) Some feel that being able to fasttrack your way to piled of gold with rl money cheapens the achievement of everyone that "earned" said gold in game the old fashioned way.
My comment for point 1) is that the benefits of mountains of gold just are not that high as in other MMOs. It's not going to be as unfair. And regarding point 2)...well only so much I can say to that. If you feel other people's actions cheapen your own achievement, that's your choice. Now, I'm with you, I intend to earn my gold in game. If I use gems for ANYTHING (and I will probably buy them with gold FYI), it will be bag/character slots. But I don't feel it harms my enjoyment of the game.

So, does supply not magically exit when you buy gems? What about everyone else you're running with? You know how siege weapons get built? The roaming group you're with puts their supply in. Everyone I saw in WvW always ran to the supply pile at a fort before heading out and simply puts it into the siege building.
Commander position costs substantial amounts of gold accounting to Anet. Gold can buy you the ability to have your own party channel, map marker, radar icon, and icon so you can actually get people organized in WvW.
How much do crests, acessories, sigils, runes, and jewels cost?
I believe legalized rmt harms my and other people's enjoyment if you look to the realm of prestige. Using guild wars 1 as a model, what I found fun was getting the 15k platnium sets, and FOW armours, as many players did because they were rare due to their cost.

My point re: supply was that you could ahve enough gold to get 12972384324 seige golem plans, but it was worthless if your realm/team mates didn't help obtain supply effectively. And from what I saw maintaining sufficient supply was a bigger bottleneck than having plans.
I can accept your point re: prestige. Although I don't believe any of the high end, cool looking things are gonna be purchasable for gold. More likly they will involve karma or other currencies (there's a bunch of cool-looking facion armor vendors in Lion's Arch, and they each require some special currency). So it may not impact that as much as you worry. We shall see. It's less of a concern to me, because I -know- I earned something cool when I got it. But that's just me.

Yes, the commander position cost 3 gold. I've seen a few that unlocked commander. Also, the book is a one time purchase. At lvl 19, if I did not splurge all my money on buying siege weapons. I could have been close to even buying the book myself. The people mainly with it were guild leaders or officers. Not that many people even need to unlock commander unless they want to lead. You guys are truly forgetting that money scales. Once you hit the higher lvls, 3 gold is a non issue. Hell by lvl 30 it will be a non issue given from my own personal experience.
Crests, accessories, etc. can be bought with karma.
Most of the prestige items come from actually playing. Karma, dungeon tokens, the looted tokens from dead players, etc. Gold mainly buys the plain weapons. All the vendors that sold the rare weapons and armor that I've seen have taken 1 of the 3 above. The plain weapons were always, always bought with gold. The only way you might get something special with gold would be a drop or crafted item off the tradepost

Damn Betakodo ...all this selling of gems is going to ruin your gold selling business ...this is the first game in 5 years I haven't been barraged with ingame gold selling ...How are the usual gold buyers going to flourish in this game without goldsellers?

If you think being able to sell gold for gems on the AH is going to get rid of gold sellers you should really look at examples of other F2P games that allow just this. It reduces gold sellers, but not removes them. They'll just have to severely undercut the market.

Then whats the point of selling gems if gold is worthless?
SO this circle comes all the way back around making it pointless to sell gems, therefore if you dont buy from $ shop your not getting gems.
