So do you punish the drug, the company, or the user?
and in the end what effect will it really have?
Each individual needs to take responsibly for his or her own actions, and only if those actions invade on the well being of another should the governement laws apply.
The man that played for 50 hours straight has already been punished for his choice, he is dead, it is sad, but he choose to do this, the game did not force him into a 50 hour event; nor did the cafe tie him to the chair.
As for the couple that left there baby alone while they went to a internet cafe, they should suffer the consequences of there actions. They both need to have counts of reckless endangerment and possibly murder, if not at least man slaughter.
Every needs to take some personal responsibly in what they do, and if the government wants to help people fine, but focing a government ban will do nothing but make the problem worse.

Does this self-help place have a website? It would be funny if it did... It would be like giving a crack addict a crack pipe with support group's name on it....

That would be funny... if I find it I'll post it. Might just be an advertisement for 1 of the local "For 20 Year Olds" papers.

Its really amazing to me. Our society has really gone downhill. Drugs like cocaine and meth have literally killed millions but they arent really being stopped. Heck no one is really trying. Alcohol has killed literally millions and yet again no one is trying to stop that. Smoking is the same situation.
Yet a few people die because they have no self control and "OMG ITS THE END OF THE WORLD!!!" I just love hypocrites.
And yes I think the parents of the 4 month should be tossed in a prison. They should never have gone to cafe without the child. Or at all. Once you have a child your life needs to be about that child.
And anyone who cant control themselves should be playing to begin with.

And Parents don't buy there kids drugs and alcohol and watch them use and drink it, but they do buy them Video games, and often watch them play it. So you have all the soccor moms thinking that Video games are going to kill there little children.

Not funny to me. I have a 4 month old baby. And my life is my child's. Yes I still play games but I would never ever even contemplate leaving her alone for more then a minute. There is always someone watching her. My wife, me, or the family. If my wife is watching our baby and needs to take a bath, cook food, or whatever then I have no problem shutting off the computer and going to watch my baby. I cant even begin to fathom just how addicted you have to be to even consider leaving a child alone for even an hour.
But its been happening like this for years. Not too long ago stories of parents leaving their kids alone to go to a crack house or to go drinking and coming home to a dead child were commonplace.
Should the companies be held responsible? Yes in alot of it they should. Cigerette companies know exactly what chemicals and in what amounts to add to make their product very addictive. Its the same with MMO companies. They know what to do to make the games addictive as heck. To make sure people keep paying to play. So yes in some regards the companies need to be held responsible. BUT
MMO games and all games in general are meant to escape reality for a short time. Not to replace it completely. So I think people need to learn control first and foremost. I never play more then 4 hours at a stretch. I think the longest I played was 8 hours in one day and that was because I off work two days.
The other guy even forgot to eat. I cant understand this either. I have played some pretty intense games and been really deep into the game. But I have never forgotten to eat.
Also my own personal experiance with someone addicted also comes from a korean player. This was in Lineage 2. A very young girl (I assume since she said) from korea. She asked me in very broken english if I had adena. I said yes and she asked if I had yahoo or MSN. I said yes. Then she told me she would play on webcam for 30 minutes for me if I gave her 5k adena after. That is just sick. I reported her and hope she got banned. But here is a person willing to sacrifice their morality for a game. Man this is nuts.
I found some humor in the fact that people can't tell stuff like this from reality though. That's what's funny...
These people are so untouched with reality that something was bound to kill them. Might as well be a game...

Look at Baseball, Football, or any other professional sport that has a large dollar amount tied to it. Players are using drugs to pump themselves up so they can hit one more home run, or out run the other team's defensive line.
People are still people be that in the real world or a MMORPG.
If we see an easy way to get something, we do it.
Originally posted by CaesarsGhost I found some humor in the fact that people can't tell stuff like this from reality though. That's what's funny...These people are so untouched with reality that something was bound to kill them. Might as well be a game...
Korea is very untouched with reality, in a country soo small, there only escape is computers, and in that world they can run around, and see trees and a clear view of the sky.
I wonder if the man that died used food items in the game while forgetting to eat himself.... That is what happens when a false world that you have created is better than your real one, at least in the eyes of the beholder.
I know it might seem like a poor example but in the 1st Harry Potter movie when he finds that mirror and he does nothing but just sit and watch it, and Dumbledore has to come and move the mirror and warns Harry how people have wasted away before it.
"Certainly, more people drop dead while eating dinner or having sex than playing online games. But Lee's death this month gained widespread notoriety, bolstering creeping fears among South Koreans that they've become hooked on the Internet."
400 gazillion people in Korea and a couple die from being too stupid to eat.... and its "the nation is hooked on the internet."
I wish they would apply that logic to something like my sex life, I could do my usual 5 minute stint with the wife and it would be reported as... "Australian sex God services half the women in the Pacific Rim for hours at a time"

and "Lee collapsed and fell off his chair. He died a few hours later."
so he died laying on the floor as a result of his doing something he enjoyed for 50 hours.
And wouldn't you rather play 5 hours a day for 2 years than 50 hours straight and die?
IT all boils down to the old maxim.."Everything in Moderation." Practically anything in excess has a harmful influence on a person. And in some cases, fatal. The companies of MMORPGs shouldnt be held any more responsible than printing a warning label on the product. If people still use it then its THEIR responsibility. They decided to play, they lost control, they died, their fault. Its sad but no different than any other addict who couldn't control the influence their activity had on their lives. His parents thought they were responsible enough to start a family, they were wrong. And their child paid for it. Thats their responsibility. Should they face jail time or whatever? I don't know. I would think the guilt enough over slaying their own child just to play a game would be enough to scar them for life. But, I could be wrong.
In the end, the governments don't really need to step in any farther than to insist that the consumers be fully informed as to the negative possibilites from using a company's products to a reasonable level. And then its the consumer's responsibility as to how they let that product effect their lives. The movement toward the concept that someone else is responsible for "whatever happened to you" makes me sick in this country. I don't know if its getting like this in other countries. But our legal system is drowning in this bullsh*t. Step up and take some damn responsibility for your own life.

Really sad, I guess that is why china has that law ......
But you got to admire his dedication..... I mean really how much can you enjoy a game.
Witty saying to amuse you goes here.
No, people just need to learn some self control
It's sad that so many Koreans have died in Internet Cafes but hey, what can you really do?
and China doesn't want ideas of personal freedom and exploration in games, and since that appears mostly in MMORPGs they cut there time off.
Same reason for when they ban PvP for under 18, they don't want kids over throwing there government.
Sounds a little crazy, but so does Communism
