Obviously a person who cannot exercise a little self control. I mean, 50 hours straight?? Don't he need to at least get up and eat??

And this better not become a major issue where governments all over the world start worrying about stupid stuff like limiting our gaming hours just because someone couldn't have a little self control.

Alchohol and cigarrettes kill way more people then videogames, 1 death from online gaming, boom, big issue.

If a crazy man reads a fantasy book, becomes even more psychotic thinking he is someone else, takes up a knife and kills a random guy on the street, what they going to do??

Ban the knife? Ban the book? I say put it in newspapers, let the people know, and let them decide. This better not become a silly major issue.

Just like how GTA:SA was suddenly slapped with the label Adult Only.

As far as I know, people would have to download the 'hot coffee' patch in order to get that extra 'feature'. Again, its by choice. If the parents' kids ownself want to see that extra 'feature', do you really think slapping the Adult Only lable would help? Internet is so easy, they can get way the same or even better 'stuff' without going through the game.

I think we should rename online gaming to....

..."Population Control" OR "Survival of the Fittest".

Cause the stupid people are dying. I'm in support of this.

The "Hot Coffee" contant was not a download of data in the GTA: SA format, the code already existed for it when Rockstar put the game out, it just took people awhile to find it, and the AO rating was slapped on to stop future sells in public stores such as Best Buy and Wal-mart.

You could argue that just becuase it's in the game doesn't mean you have to see it, but that holds about as much water are reading Play Boy for the articles.

You don't read the articles in playboy?

They seem just as good as the Articles in Stuff/Maxim to me...

Yes, that's true the code was already in the game. However, from reviews and comments I've heard, it's not so easy to 'unlock' the hot coffee. It takes quite a big deal of trouble unless you know the whole procedure and how to get it.

But then again, despite the trouble, if teens still want to get it, then the usage of internet should also be slapped adults only. I mean, its so much easier to search the internet for real stuff, why go through all the trouble of watching an animated one? And since its the teen choice to get the hot coffee, it should be not much different from making the choice to search adult rated content on the internet.

ok GTA aside, players should always keep in mind not to take things overboard. Playing 50 hours straight is only going to lessen efficiency, take a break, eat, get some sleep, then continue playing, you live longer, you play better =)

While the internet is a inter-connected "web" of sites they are each different and have there only rules that they must follow that seperate them.

I can go from Yahoo mail to MMORPG.com but that doesn't mean Yahoo mail is connected with MMORPG.com

It's like saying just becuase a PS2 has a game that is rated AO and a PS2 can play PS2 games, all PS2 games should be rated AO.

But on the flip side going form one area of GTA: SA to another, your still playing GTA, the area isn't the same but it's still the same game.

Even though it's hard to get to, doesn't mean it isn't there.

One sentense spoken out of turn can ruin your professional life, so one scene can force the ESRB to change a game's rating.

Just a few spin-off quote I made up.

"Friends don't let friends drive drunk" turns to "Friends don't let friends play WoW"

"Lost another loan to Ditech" turns into "Lost another player to Warcraft"

I'm not saying WoW is a bad game..it's just funny to me that this time they actually mention what game he was addicted to.

Guns dont kill people. People kill people..... Yah but the gun helps.

Samething there. The game didnt kill him he killed himself. But the game helped.

The man named Lee, the baby of the couple, and another one that was discussed a few weeks ago.

I am not meaning to say it's happening left and right, but I guess it came across that way.

So it's not one, it's three. "So many" certainly would declare more than three.

It's isolated instances and we're not talking about a simple case of compulsive gaming. It's quite clear that there were other underlying psychological reasons for such a behaviour (social pressure, low self esteem or depression). We should also take into account the cultural and social elements of the Korean and Chinese culture, who tend to be conservative societies and therefore the social pressure is quite higher than in western civilizations.

Games can indeed be addictive, as they offer bursts of excitement (when you advance a level, gain items, etc.) in a short period of time, as dopamine levels increase while playing a video game. Still, this cannot be the only reason as it would fail to explain the different tastes in gaming (others prefer FPS, others strategic games, etc.), the variety of time spent among gamers (some tend to play casually and only for a few hours a day), or why others who have tried computer gaming didn't enjoy it as an activity.

The title of the thread is wrong, I think. It should read "Another Korean dies because of lack of self restraint".

You know, in Greece where I live there was a scandal some years ago concerning illegal electronic slot machines. Some people threw their savings away, families were ruined, officials were blamed... in the end a totally unreasonable law was voted banning all kinds of electronic games in public places. By the time it was lifted many Internet Cafes had closed for good, and coin-ops and pinballs have vanished irrevocably. Was anyone saved? Hardly... the slots just went more undercover and outside major cities cops were much easier to buy off. Only the gaming community was hurt in the end...

There are many ways with which people can throw their money or their lives away. No law can save you from that. It could (and should) protect from things such as drugs and widespread use of weapons, but a game? Rather we should take a close look at our society and see why it has reached the point where people prefer an imaginary world over the real one. It is not that hard to see.

"Earth Free from yet another dumbass" would've been a good title... or "Average Earth IQ Raised"

The guy did not want to die. And I bet if he had known he would never of done that. But if it was a wierd why to commit suicide then I guess you can say that yeah.... ::::06::

The thing that shocked me was the part of the family that "forgot" there baby and it died! They should be put through horrific pain for something that fucking stupid! Like shedding there skin with a cheese slicer.....

"In May, a 4-month-old girl left alone at home in Inchon died of suffocation while her parents were playing at an Internet cafe.

"We were thinking of playing for just an hour or two and returning home as usual, but the game took longer that day" — that's how a policeman was quoted in newspapers paraphrasing the parents. The couple were charged with involuntary manslaughter, police said."
    ...

    sad...

But why this happens is IMO the fact that the games bring ppl from different parts of the world together. And timezones are messing ppl up. I bet most of the ppl just keep thinking "just this then I quit", but then theres a group doing a raid on a boss u want to kill etc. It never stops and you the player feel that you have to keep on going.

The idea that China has with the 5 hour timer on an account is a good one actually, and the only "good" one to solve this problem.

Dammit I am so sick of people making these issues into civil problems when they are plainly medical problems. There needs to be no laws passed, no workshops on how best to punish, nothing. Both manufacturer, seller, and user all do so willingly. The fact that some get addicted and some don't is no reason to outlaw or control these substances. It is up to the choices of accountable individuals, in an age where information on anything is freely available, to make these choices.

If the user becomes violent or victimizes others due to the use, then it becomes a civil/criminal problem. No extra laws are passed. They are the same for the crime whether or not the person was using. Equal time for equal crime. But until then, addiction is a medical problem. Let's start treating it as such.

Now, was I talking about drug-use or MMORPG playing? Does it matter?

A time limit or complete restriction fails to stop an addiction, primarily because it doesn't bother dealing with the reasons of compulsive gaming. As with alcohol restrictions and gambling restrictions in the past, it would only lead into forms of a black market or, in our case, most likely into people buying multiple accounts, therefore contributing more to the problem, as the addiction becomes financially bothersome. It's like waiting that a drug addict would suddenly stop his drug habit because heroin prices are too high. Instead, he'll try to figure ways of paying for it, even illegal ones, like theft or other criminal activities.

If you want to deal with compulsive gaming, you'll have to understand the underlying reasons and find an effective way to deal with them. Lack of social skills, low self esteem, depression, social pressure are the most common reasons for compulsive gaming. That's not to say that there's not a somatic effect (as I described in a previous post), but an addiction does not occur without psychological reasons.

Imagine what would happen if they got their hands on a GOOD game?

    Korea would cease to exist..

If they only carpet bombed with donkey kongs instead of napalm during the korean war the world might have looked differently.

This just goes to show that some people just dont know when to stop. I agree with the "Get some self restraint!" people.

I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.
