I have been playing FFXI for about a year now and its the 1st MMORPG i've ever played. Its also the only MMORPG I have played. But to help answer your question FFXI is definitely for players who are committed to the game. It is very rewarding if you spend a lot of your free time playing. I have heard a lot about WoW and that it is fun as hell. But there are a lot of complaints about how it is too easy to level. Leveling in FFXI is definitely a challenge. If you learn quickly, partying is very fun in the game and I love the subjob system. Once again, the game is awesome and rewarding if you remain committed.
Ok, i have to make a quick snap at that Deathmolor.....you are about the ONLY person who has ever said WoW graphics are better if a computer "can handle it". that statment is absurd. Reporters and Gamers from coast to coast have said and quote. "WoW seems ...aged..." "while offering fast combat and practically no learning-curve....the look of WoW seems a bit behind the times". And seeing as how i have a computer that allows me to use my comp. on a 36" TV, its pretty buffed as far as power. and WoW still looks like way too cartoony. It also has the lowest polygon count of any "current" MMORPS on the market. Thats just an indesputable fact. So it is more than obvious you are severly biased in your opinions against FFXI. Clearly with the way you propagandize you "colorful" opinions on WoW's capabilities while doing the oposite for the former. Now.....onto facts about the two. I have alot of experience between the two, and alot of experience with opinions and how others feel about the two games. And easily, they are both games that are worthy of your time, but for two COMPLETELY different reasons. As they offer complete 180's as far as even the most general gameplay mechanics. It is only natural that generally people will love/hate one or the other. They are the same genre, but two reverse games in content and personality.
*WoW*------I personally do not think this game should have gone as far as MMORPG. Most of the game can be done alone.(something that people HATE about FFXI) This game could have come off just as well as an action adventure game. There is no community here. Because of how easy and quick this game is, you dont really get the serious playing field. This game is simply a beat em up brawler. Nothing for you to have fun with. No cool otherworld fun. No real tradeskills, no real side-games. You lvl up quickly, and get through the game. thats it. All the characters look the same, not alot of choice for different clothing or armor. The classes and jobs are really limited. Only one body style for each gender. PvP gives a bit extra, but in the end, its tedious. A tack on not meant for any real gameplay. Its a great game to get you into the genre, no doubt. its an action-adventure that gives you minimal activity with a not-so-diverse community of immature gamers all looking to just kill something. Its a great game, but personally, just go buy Halo 2 and get online.....
*FFXI*------This game may be too big for its own good. And quite the opposite of WoW, most of this game cannot be done alone. not at all. but keep in mind, as much as WoW is hack n slash with no learning curve. FFXI is ALLLLLLL about community and interaction. Its ALLLLLL about the people playing. which is good and bad, because its never really about YOU. First off, the bad. The progression of the latter lvls becomes very ...very...difficult. deathmolor said slow not hard. wrong. this game offers a variety of challenge when it comes to fighting. Whether it be forming the right group, notorious monsters (which absolutely rock) and all kinds of quest specific monsters. The fighting and lvling in FFXI can take a very very long time latter in the game, but the purpose is to show you that the fighting isnt even 10% of the game. FFXI offers things of all kinds of crafting, selling, trading just like a real economy. From fishing, to cooking, to making your own....everything. either for yourself or trade. some people come into this game and dont lvl at all. The amount of conent in this game can only be compared to the world that subcribes to it. They have ALL sorts of fairs and special activities in and out of town. just like a fair in the real world. Square is always creating fun and exciting ways to keep this game fresh. Whether you want to fight, or fish. the cool thing is, it may be slow, but i dont think there is anything in this game you cant put all of your time into. Some people hate this. but it makes for a much more rewarding system of, do one thing, get what you wanted. a much more specific reawrd system. not, kill-get-item....but again, some people hate that. The the job classes are very diverse, you can unlock a multitude of jobs , after the already dozen you have. Now back to the bad.....there is such an immersion of content and game. The bad thing is, you will never be the first one to find or do anything, there were thousands of japanese players with multiple jobs all capped at 70 before the game hit american shores. and it seems a bit tedious. having just about everyone out there already beaten the game a hundred times....kinda takes away from the you in the game.not a good feeling in a fantasy game. but, some people thrive on that. your choice. the graphics, who needs to explian them, its Squaresoft..well, square-enix.....when have they ever let down.ok, i know this has been long. but its the only way to begin to descibe the content (and the still to come content) that is available. so..case and point. if you wanna pick up and play....go for WoW. it will never have and of the slow, agonizing game play that can often plague FFXI. but then again, thats all you will get....kill kill kill, no human interaction. just kill. some love, some hate. If you want a game thats more like an alternate life and not just a game. then get FFXI. there is so much to do, and even if you focus on one thing, it still takes time. the community effect here is tremendous. again, some love , some hate. and dont get confused, everything ive described about FFXI, isnt even CLOSE to what it has to offer. thats the difference between the two. It all just depends how you like to play. Some suggest getting both because of the variance between the two. But.....eh, id just pick up halo if i wanted to just beat the shit out of everything.

IMO the graphics of WoW are better then FFXI as well. Although the models lack a bit in detail, the atmoshpere easilly makes up for it. Also, I just looked up the reviews for both of the games on gamespot and ign and both of them gave wow a higher score for the graphics then FFXI. The fact that FFXI has a more 'realistic' look doesn't matter as this has nothing to do with graphics quality, just style. What I see as the problem with FFXI's graphics is that everything is so bland. The game lacks color and there is almost nothing interesting to see in the world.
Most of the game can be done alone.
That is not true. All of the leveling can be done solo, yes. But there is more to the game then that. The game offers content for both solo play and group throughout almost all the levels (Starting at about From 12-18 until the top lvl). This is a lot better imo then the obligatory partying in FFXI. Also, instances provide group gameplay that is imo a lot more fun then all the camping you do in FFXI.
This game could have come off just as well as an action adventure game. There is no community here. Because of how easy and quick this game is, you dont really get the serious playing field.
I guess this really depends on the server you're on. I'm on the horde side of skullcrusher, EU. The community here doesn't seem that much different then there was in FFXI. Also, seeing as there are at least 6 or 7 guilds on the horde side that are doing the 40-man dungeons (MC, Onyxia and a few are in BWL as well) you can't really say that there are no serious players either.
This game is simply a beat em up brawler. Nothing for you to have fun with. No cool otherworld fun. No real tradeskills, no real side-games.
What do you mean with otherworld fun?
You lvl up quickly, and get through the game. thats it. All the characters look the same, not alot of choice for different clothing or armor.
Lvl speed depends on your playstyle. It took me a bit over 20 days to get to 60 on one character. If you take away all the repetive subjob leveling and waiting for parties in FFXI (Which you don't see as much of in WoW), that should not be too hard either. And about the different clothing and armor: There seems to be a lot more of it in WoW then FFXI. It really is possible to make quite a unique looking character and have armor with decent stats. The only armor I see a lot of is end-game sets, but the same counts for FFXI AF.
The classes and jobs are really limited.
Every class in WoW has a unique design and gameplay. For example: A rogue is build around stealthing up to enemies, using strong openers and building combo points until they can hit a good finisher. Add in stuff like poisons and the energy bar instead of purely timers to limit how much abilities you can use and you have a class with a lot more depth to it then FFXI.
Or warrior: Three different stances with each a unique set of moves next to the general moves, building rage to be able to use the abilities, the importance of the different weapons and swapping between them. I've just tanked low lvl content in FFXI and WoW, but tanking well in WoW at that lvl required a lot more attention and skill then in FFXI, where I could easilly hold hate by using provoke every 30 secs and boost ever 15.
FFXI on the other hand has the more limited design. Pretty much all of the melee classes have only a few moves and weaponskills and participating in skillchains is the same for all of them. Maybe its different now, but when I was playing summoners rarely were able to use their summons and more often had to play like backup healers.
I have to go now, but I'll finish this post a bit later when I get back.
Thanks for all the info, guys. I've decided to get FF in 2 weeks. I was thinking that FF will "last longer" than WoW, and it seems that WoW has a bad community. Anywayz, thanks all!
I played FFXI for over a year---got it when it came out, and I'm a WOW fan now. FFXI was great, but it demands much from you. Lvling is the core of the game....and the great community also can turn on you if you are mis-lvld. You need to balance two jobs at once, and they must be in harmony. Most of the game you spend lvling, waiting for groups, and farming. FFXI is a great game, don't get me wrong, but WOW is better for me now. I can play it more casually and still have a great time. I made some great friends while on FFXI and have yet to establish that kind of community with WOW. But if you don't keep up your playing and lvling, your friends will pass you by. It happend to me with a few people I met.
The only other glaring drawback with FFXI is the economy. You need to far a lot----A LOT. Everything costs money....You spend a lot of money just adventuring. The only way not to go broke is to farm a lot. I've spent whole real life days just farming so I could sell the stuff for gil. The Economy has also been nearly destroyed by inflation. Many people it seems buy gil online, so they will pay obscene prices for things at the Auction Houses, which hurts those players who get their gil from farming.
FFXI is a diehard mmo. It exells at doing what mmo's do best.....drain your time, and drain your wallet. Don't get me wrong, I loved my time in V'anadiel....but I'm happier in WOW.
Wow is graphically superior, has more of a focus on questing and exploring than FFXI. I've been playing WOW for about 5 months and have 4 characters all around lvl 13....so unless you lvl as hardcore as you are forced to in FFXI, wow won't be over as fast as some say.
If you want a hardcore mmo which demands many hours out of your life....then FFXI is for you....but if you want a more relaxed mmo, which a bigger emphisis on questing instead of lvling, then WOW is more your type. I like both, but I like WOW more. I booted up FFXI a few days ago, and I just couldn't get back into it. Good luck Adventuring.
FFXi is not the greatest MMORPG, in fact...it's far from it. but WoW...i finished cancelling my account justa while ago(and no...I'm not kidding). This game was -SO- hyped that when i logged in i was expecting the greatest experience ive ever had with any MMO.what did i get?an MMORPG just as dull and boring as all the others and a server full of CS players calling each other noobs.bah..I'm getting tired of these new MMOs.even FFXi is starting to piss me off.
I voted for FFXI. I used to play FFXI. But, in all honesty, if you are just starting out... I'd start out with WoW.
This is for a few reasons. First, WoW is noob friendly in that it is indepth, but not as demanding (time-wise) as FFXI is. It's crazy the amount of time that FFXI requires. I'm sure you can sink alot of time into WoW, don't get me wrong. But, let me give you a brief example. I had a Lv. 75 Bard with max everything, tons of cash, great gear, great reputation, ...basicly I achieved all that anyone could ask for in a MMO. Out of the ~2 years or so I played it my playtime was at OVER 365 days (realtime)...that means that out of that 2 year period, I spent over 1 full year of that dedicated to playing FFXI!!!!
Secondly, FFXI is dying. Now, if you asked me this question 2 years ago? FFXI hands down. It was fresh, new with great people, great content, and great support. The economy was fresh and the sky was the limit. Now... you couldn't pay me to start out again in FFXI...that game's economy is shit. It's so bad that I deleted my "uber" character and walked away from the game without a second regret.
You will never find another person who loved FFXI as much as I did. But, I speak the truth. I'll leave it to you to make up your own mind.
__________
Arguing over the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you are still a retard.
you guys get try out all the fun games! and the people from malaysia just can't play them because y'all hav to pay monthly fees like us$ 13.00 per month and that's like RM 50 per month to just play it and dun forget the internet bills
well i like ff a lot i play all ff games on sony system since ff7 and i also like warcraft a lot to, just like blood and gore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(sigh) you ppl out there get to do things we can't do.
I play both and they are alot of fun each. If you are interested in pve and group work go with ffxi. If you want pvp and the ability to solo go with WoW.
IMHO I enjoy WoW more than ffxi b/c I enjoy soloing and killing other players, but both can get monatanous after awhile. I keep both accounts and swap up games every couple of months to keep it fresh.
I Definetly think that FFXI would be much better then WoW my reasons being that its seems WoW has become to big for its own good. In my local games shops it is always sold out and i would imagen that the economy would be terrible with the amount of players. Also FFXI is the latest installment of the best game series ever i have played every FF since 7 (except 10-2, but that isnt worthy of the FF title) so that is also my biast opinion hope i could help
Another point i want to make is that it seems WoW is being compared to quite alot of other MMORPG's and its almost a cocky statement (that they think they can take on the MMORPG world)
Green_horn the economy in Wow is actually amazingly good. Making money and getting items is relatively easy. It's one of the few things that WoW has on ffxi.
Hey gang my first post! Just joined and i like what I see already!!!
To compare both games would be like comparing reading a long Trilogy to a Grimms brothers short Fairy Tale story!!! As much fun as Wow was for me, I found it really boring after only a couple of months. There were almost no "educated rpg" people in the game worlds. It seemed to be completely run over by 12 to 14 year olds that had absolutley no care for the other person, but leveling and money. Then came the zerging and corpse camping and the constant abuse of toons asking for money right left and center. The community on several servers (yes i played on many of them!) was so immature, that it made me cancel my daughters account because i would not let her continuosly be abused by all those immature players. Saying that, the game is way too easy, absolutely no penalties (except for equipment deterioration) whatsoever if you die. A hardocre playing 10 year old could become a level 60 in less then a month without really trying! And of course, all that double xp when you did not play for a while. What gives? If you don't play, you don't earn??? Its as simple as that! If I want a simple RPG, then I'll play "Put Put goes to the Circus"".
On the other hand, FFXI is a real RPG persons Game! If you like to really earn your stripes? Then this is the game for you! Yea! It's really tuff to solo but what real good Fantasy novel has it's character do the whole quest or story alone? The whole purpose of MMROPGs is to play online with other people. The main reason I play these type of games is for the community, the interaction you get playing your toon with other characters, whether your the mage healing the warrior or the ranger pulling the mob...it's all based on teamwork. We all laugh when we all survive with 1 hitpoint left and we all cry and even laugh when we all get wiped out!! That the idea behind these games....to have fun in groups, guilds or whatever.
The community in FFXI is above all! I have never experienced a better community then in the world of Vanadiel. You simply ask for help with any topic and more times then once, you will get more then 1 reply. It's alll about people helping people and FFXI outshines them all in that field.
I don't play MMROPGs only to level, money, fame and equipement...I play to have fun, chat and exchange ideas with other players and if teaming up is the only way to do it in FFXI, then all the better for everyone! If you are looking for a truly immersive "Fantasy RPG" then FFXI is the game for you. Yea! There are many Japanese speaking players, but who cares, there is an auto-translater and all and all it works very well. Team up, do the quests but most of all ....... have fun playing with a real community who cares!!!
There is my 2 cents worth and hope to post quite often!!!
Its worse to actually think about doing something then actually doing it!!!
Ok first of all on the point of graphics. I actually indicated in my post what graphics WOW actually has. I can not make it any more clear. As for polygon count your flat out wrong the polygon count is so high the game when set to max resolution and all the effects i mentioned above gives even my Nvida 6800 256 megs of ram a run for its money. FFXI was designed to run on a console with 4 megs of video ram. Max resolution of the textures in FFXI 1024x1024 while wow uses 4096x4096 u need the power to run that if u dont graphics will have to be scaled and will not look that good.
As for reviews of the graphics.
GameSpot reviews rate FFXI graphics at 8 and WOW graphics is rated at 9.
So your wrong on the point of widely accepted that wow has poor graphics.
I found the FFXI Community to be the worst of all. I have never seen a bigger bunch of rude people in my life. The japanese players are completely racist rejecting american players out of hand. Players are overly critical of play style. There is only one way to play the game and thats it. No other way is acceptable. If you don't learn that way your rejected. WoW offers in the game design many ways to play the game effectively. FFXI there is only one way and better learn it or you will never level.

Getting FFXI in two days.... I read on another forum that they "reject" American players because they think they can't speak good enough english to communicate with you, and would rather talk to ppl they will understand. So technically, they're not being racist. And the translater isn't that good as well

To be honest, I can sympathize with that feeling, because I have it too. The auto-translator is handy, but it's terribly limited. On the other hand, I had a JP party leader just a couple of days ago who spoke very little English, and although I had misgivings at first, I in fact had a blast. She wanted my Red Mage to skillchain with her Samurai, which was an unusual set up, but we were able to coordinate and skillchain effectively. White Mage handled enfeebling and I was able to magic burst all my skillchains. She also chained with the thief in the party; samurai always rock at SCs.
In my own personal appinion, I go for the atmosphear in my MMORPGs and how many plays.
I say final fantasy as it feels realistic, no invisable walls either. I like to explore and enjoy the great view's of most places. WoW just has realy dull graphics, no sound effects of win's and sandy effects when the wind blows. Pluss it has alot of invisable walls like in GuildWars I realy cant stand the games for.

Good luck Adventuring.
i played FFXI and got bord as hell
i swiched to wow and im lovin it
FFXI you have to have a party to make it past lvl 10
WoW solo the whole way if you want

Arguing over the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you are still a retard.
i get what u guys mean but rember its only a game not the end of the world where all the
machins kill us its more u die so what feeling
Mwahahahahhahah
you guys get try out all the fun games!
and the people from malaysia just can't play them because y'all hav to pay monthly fees like us$ 13.00 per month and that's like RM 50 per month to just play it and dun forget the internet bills
well i like ff a lot
i play all ff games on sony system since ff7
and i also like warcraft a lot to, just like blood and gore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd defenitly go for FFXI.
Think the graphics are much better than WoW (too cartoony)
but i think everyone has to decide for themselves what to play
In my own personal appinion, I go for the atmosphear in my MMORPGs and how many plays.
I say final fantasy as it feels realistic, no invisable walls either. I like to explore and enjoy the great view's of most places. WoW just has realy dull graphics, no sound effects of win's and sandy effects when the wind blows. Pluss it has alot of invisable walls like in GuildWars I realy cant stand the games for.
realy sorry my browser messed up and double posted
