First of all, great idea, great game, great setting, great artstyle, great overall gameplay for every-now-and-then. And its quite addicting to be honest! If you only focus on the grafics on the screens here you will fail - because this game is a very fun experience. But can be quite rage-infusing. If you do not like unfairness in games, stay away from it.
I just quit it, after 1,5months of playing - out of sheer frustration.
Okay it wasnt really frustration, more that this client you get to play this game in is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo[...] super instable, that 99,9% of all deaths are happened due to LAG.
Yes, flash games and LAG. Very bad netcode.
The more particles are on the screen, the worse the situation. Now imagine this: You get into a zone which is very popular in this game to farm certain "stat increasing potions" where tons of mobs rush at you, shooting laser-beams, while your group your playing in shoots laser beams - combine all particle effects for a super-lag fest. And on TOP OF THAT, there is an ability from a class called Necromancer which sucks of life from ebemies and yields it to friendly players. While it does that it creates trillions of small particle effects which creates even MORE lag. Thats why the class is called "Lagromancer" in this game. And theres another thing to add that, while playing overseas and on a very crowded time at the evening, you can add rubberbanding. And on top of that there seems to be an issue I have noticed quite at the end of playing it, that some flash-thingy seems to overflow and you get the issues stated above, except the fps-lag, even earlier with less particles going on. I'm no expert in programming...
Imagine you have all top-tier gear (which are super expensive and hard to aquire), learned how to dodge projectiles properly, are even an OP-priest who is like godmode and then die... of a lag.
Pathetic isnt it? Yes it is.
But hey! No stress, no worries, no anger GW2 is almost there! Yayyyy!
You listed the graphics as a pro ? the year is 2012 no need to retro graphics...
It stops be being able to really enjoy this game... I guess i just like modern games with up to date graphics..
Other than that the game aint too bad its pretty basic over the top shooter type game ok for a quick blast now adn than but you cant really play it for any extended amount of time without getting bored..
This game should not be rated as high as 8... maybe a 6.. but i guess we all like different things.
9 for asthetics? This looks like an NES, even if it was going for irony its bad.
9 for longevity? Killing off your character and forcing you have to restart from scratch does not increase longevity. I can CHOOSE to restart a character on anyother game I want, that doesn't mean its actually fun to do.
7 for innovation? Because in an 8bit, 2D game the attacks go where you point them? I have a collection of Atari games that will BLOW YOUR MIND if you think thats innovative.
8 for social? Because it has chat and guilds? Why not just hand every game a 10 if thats your criteria for social interaction?
Are you out of your minds? I am asking that 100% seriously.
The reviews on this site just keep getting more and more laughable.
Aesthetics 9/10 - Are you insane? Even if you think the retro style is cool, there is no way this should get a 9. That is better than you gave Star Trek Online! Do you really think they are even in the same league?
It's perfectily warranted score lol. I thought we left the idea of representative art way back in the late 19th century lol.
Art-direction wise, RotMG wipes the floor with STO just like Picasso wiped the floor with the vast majority of figurative hack artists of his day.
The theme of the game is perfectly conveyed by its art style. It's like saying that Tetris's would be better if done in DX11 with a gazillion of polygons in hyper-realistic style (lol). No, it wouldn't.
Seriously? RotMG doesn't have art direction beyond "Hey, 8-bit graphics are fun!" STO, on the other hand, is internally consistent, true to the source material, and takes creative liberties where appropriate.
It's clear Wild Shadow didn't even buy into the art direction fully. They have high-res fonts all over the place, and a thin outline against the sprites. If you're going to go 8-bit, go all-in. See, for example, Mega Man 9, which would be modern-retro art direction done right.
Picasso was a technically masterful painter. He didn't paint what he did because he couldn't match others at their own game, he did it because he wanted to explore art in new ways. Pixelart graphics need to stop being given a pass like they were in this review.

Lol this game is kinda fun but to be honest its pretty crap in so many ways its not funny.
As soon as I played this it reminded me of Tibia, Obviously less content and more care free, but thats what's good about it!
8 overall? Really?
