I'd say sub WoW. It is the top MMO for a reason and you may be one of the people who finds it to be their favorite. While it isn't my favorite I have played all of the expansions to Level Cap and have raided/PvPed all of them.
And McDonald's is one top selling restaurants for a reason too. Doesn't make it the best food or even food that you should even eat.
Both WoW and McDonalds are top for the same reason. You get in, get what you need and get out.
I wouldn't call it food, however, Rift is a subcategory of WoW... sadly. It's worse than WoW food, if it could be called that.
I play MMOs for 10 years now and I tried bunch of them. I could find something good in every single mmo i have played except in RIFT. Its the worst piece of crap I have ever played. Plastic, soulless and frigid. It is like the developers did not invest the love in it. Its like a nice looking apple without a taste. The worst lore ever ( Farmville has a better lore). Quests are bad. World is plastic and unimaginative prison.

McDonalds is on top coz its cheap and fast. Playing WoW is not cheap coz it one of the few games that still have a subscription model + cost of every expansion.
Currently on the line about Resubing to RIFT with all the new things they have added, but at the same time I've never played WoW before and I was thinking about buying the game (now that all of the Expansions are $60) and playing it for the first time.
What do you guys think?
don't go to Wow if you like to pvp while you level.
rift is far superior in that dept.
wow has let their sub-max level pvp balance go for too many years and its one of the worste games for that now.
pve though it can't be beat if you're into that sort of thing.

Its kind of funny, but it seems that RIft really attracted the post wow crowd and the pre wow crowd hated it......It jsut felt like they took pieces of about 4 MMOs and pasted and copied the entire game....People that think Rifts are unique and not in any other MMO obviously never played Warhammer (which is where many of the RIft devs came from btw)......
For someone that isn't burnt out on wow or gear grind themeparks then i'd say wow is the best mmo you can play, burnt out on both though but it was a good 4 or so years, can't deny that.
WoW is a far superior game and is much more enjoyable while leveling. The quests are much better, and the world, although cartoonish, is much more lively and engaging.
Go with WoW.
LMAO
Your kidding right?
RIft blows away Wow in every way. Its no contest. I just resubbed to RIFT and the devs have been hard at work. The game is AMAZING now. You have to check it out.
Many people are coming back due to Conquest, and the server im on, Wolfsbane is very very active. I cant believe how much has gone on since I left.
Wow? Give me a break. Its nothing more then a cartoon with 12 year olds playing these days. People are leaving it in droves, everyone is sick to death of it.
Rift has a more mature player base as well. You dont hear the LRNHOWTOPLAYNOOBSLOLROFLCOPTER hurp durp crap as well.
Rift or WoW?
Puhlease...>RIFT all the way........
Rift is a poor man's WoW. How anyone can argue this is beyond me. I've played both games, and WoW is FAR SUPERIOR. The only thing Rift has over WoW is graphics and the soul system, which, ironically, lends the game to be far less balanced than WoW in PvP. And the questing in WoW is so much better than Rift it isn't even funny. Since they redid the old world quests for Cata, it was a lot more enjoyable. Leveling in Rift is a chore.
WoW has:
More content in both PvE and PvP
A larger population of people to play with
Better questing
Multiple leveling options due to zone overlap
FAR, FAR superior combat
Better Lore
Better endgame
Better armor models
Better gear itemization/customization
A massive world compared to the claustrophic Rift world
Seriously, Rift is better in every way, huh? LMAO.
Seriously
WoW?
Perhaps five years ago kiddo. Now, its beyond lame. Its like playing a cartoon game with 12 year olds.
Enjoy playing with emo teens? Play WOW. Enjoy listening to kids talking to each other in chat? Play WoW....
WoW at this point is nothing more then a game for children............Like big fuzzy panda bears and cute little bitty gnomes? Like cartoons?
Play WOW.............
Rift graphics, gameplay, players, updates, are all superior.........pvp and pve? RIFT.......hands down.......
simple as that..........
Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and they all stink.

Like Rift isent the same way. If WoW is McDonalds then Rift is Arby's. I call Rift arby"s because they ARE a fastfood chain but with a limited menu most of which youll never try lol.
It really depends. Wows graphics are outdated but the gameplay and everything is completely developed along with a vibrant community. Rift from what I have read has made some great strides as of late. I personally enjoy rift but that is just a personal preference. Combat is similiar but Rift is a bit faster paced than WoW.
Go with WoW. There is nothing in Rift that you wont find in WoW. And you will have people to play with. I have been to the Rift forums, the servers that use to be populated and everyone was moving to seem to be having issues nowadays.
I stopped playing Rift because there was a boss in a dungeon that was a carbon copy of a WoW raid boss.
Id give wow a shot. Its the standard for comparisons alot of the time. Don't get too involved though its one of those games that can vacuum your time if you let it.
Kinda hard choice imo. I stopped playing Rift just because I had no time, and now I'm thinking of either playing Rift again or Wow(summer vacation). I downloaded WoW's trial and I like the brighter colors - MUCH brighter/more colorful than Rift. Rift seems like a darker game.
For people saying "Rift hands down because of 3faction pvp", have you thought about the fact that the op may not mainly be interested in pvp?
You may want to at least give WoW a try as you've never played it before. Leveling in cata seems pretty fun and if you're interested in things other than powerleveling, you may enjoy the lore of the quests/instances, etc. Also, honestly I enjoy the fact that there are random races of golins, orcs, dwarves, night elves, etc in WoW, rather than races that look VERY similar in Rift..
Really it's up to you, yeah Wow is older, but that doesn't necessarily mean the game sucks.
Don't be lured by the 3 faction PvP, in part because of what I'm about to say about Rift's combat and in part because it isn't what you think it is (it's not DaoC, the factions are separate from the normal factions, it doesn't really matter, it's just a PvP zone with 3 factions, not an open world RvR experience).
Whatever else, if you value the combat of a game, go with WoW. Seriously. Whilst it's not as good as it once was (I miss my Unholy DK tank dearly) WoW's combat is amazing comared to Rift. In Rift, every calling (archetype) uses the same resource spread across eight souls (talent tress/classes), so nothing really feels unique, it's all the same tiresome reiteration of build up a resource then spend it (clerics only spend). In Rift, you'll end up making macros that contain 5-10 abilities because they're all so goddamn generic it really doesn't matter what you press, and you have way too many abilities that do the same thing.
If you've only played Rift, WoW is a real treat combat-wise, and you'll realise how abysmal Rift is.
RIFT was a *crushing* disappointment; a shallow, loveless, generic MMO the likes of which hasn't been seen in a P2P format since, well, forever.
rift is better then wow so stick with rift, and in both pvp rift is also better then wow so I still don't see a reason for wow even exist but everyone to his own
Ok all aspects about the actual game can be argued about either way due to peoples preferences, but do you want 1 fact to go with RIFT over WOW.
Trions development team, they are continualy actively improving RIFT, adding fresh content at a staggering rate (mentoring, 3 faction pvp in next patch anyone?) Not a single person can argue that Trion has set the bar way above what any other company delivers. And they Listen to the players - we get what we ask for.....
WOW is just a cashcow for blizzard, they have little care for the game anymore, they release expansions just using the some rehashed content and models use for the last 6 years. Expect nothing dynamically new...
And my personal opinion on this, I cant see how anybody would choose a stagnant archaic game over a new one that is constantly changing and bringing fresh ideas to the genre...
(@ whoever posted about the population of WOW being a reason to go with it, seriously!!! does it matter that thre are 8 million....can you group with them all at once.... no, as long as there is enough to be able to experience all content with a resonable ammount of time, sub numbers mean nothing)

OP,I feel sorry for you.If I only had these 2 'games' to choose from I would never play an MMO again.

If you don't play WoW is because you don't want to. The game is free for the first 20 levels. You can't go wrong.

I played wow for six years and rift for one year. That said I've enjoyed my rift experience more and would not go back to wow.

Eagerly awaiting: World of Darkness, ArcheAge.
