Ranged combat in The Secret World is going to be critical for success in controlling large mobs. We managed to catch up to Martin Bruusgaard to talk about ranged combat. Check it out!
MMORPG: You say there are hundreds of weapons in the game, what are your favorite ranged weapons?
Martin Bruusgaard: My favorite weapons are the ranged weapons from the 3rd age, which looks like.... Hmmm... Really badass. Trust me on this...

I want to like this game - I want the devs to be rewarded for trying something new in the MMO space. But, Funcom. Ugh. Massively.com put out a recent article on 10 worst MMO launches, and Funcom got 2 of 10 entries for AO and AoC.
I was there for the AoC launch and the disaster in front of you once you left Tortage Bay - I get the feeling from TSW forum posts here, it's the same thing - great opening, horrible after that. Can we now say 'typical Funcom' game?
In addition, I've watched the MMORPG hypemeter actually drop in the last days and it was pretty low to begin with.
Sigh. I really wanted to like this one, but Funcom is just there for the Day 1 dollars...
feh and you guys have to tell the masses about some skills working well with otehr weapons
I used assult rifle with pistols and it worked like a charm
What are the 3rd age wepons he is refering too?
What is the third age? Middleearth? LOTR in TSW?
Garrett, spellchecker please.
This seems all well and good but hopefully they'll be able to make guns sound like... erm... guns. I'm being serious here, sound design is important in a game and they need to work on their sound design as a whole.
Let's not forget how terrible of a launch WoW and, most recently, Diablo III had. Bad launches happen, and it's no reason to write off a game. Considering AoC and AO turned out to be very solid and fun games, it would be foolish to not give TSW a chance just because of "ew, Funcom."
I, for one, am going to skip the opening rush. Those are rarely worth the hassle. I'll give it a month to get the bugs out and then jump in. If you think a game is going to have a bad launch - don't play at launch.
Just ask the right questions! Argh! Why has nobody in the pseudo-internet-gaming-journalism-industry the balls to ask the important questions? Something like:
"A lot of beta-testers have complained about not enjoying combat in your game, especially ranged combat. Do you have something to tell them?"
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
They already did. The inner wheel abilities are more generic and simple to not scare off new players. The complex abilities, like pets, stuns, dodges, shields, etc, etc are in the outer wheel. The animations and sounds are being worked on and are said to have been greatly improved in the latest CB patch. Also, a double tap dodge has been added, apperantly.
Try to keep up with the info. This has been referenced many times.
I think they'd answer something like 'this has become a lot less a problem with the latest patches and we're still in the process of finetuning more, try and see for yourself next beta if it'll still be a problem for you'
No combat can't please everyone of course, but there have been (imo) some significant improvements.
? Imo TSW is now already better than AoC was right after launch. Also, when it comes to content there's far more consistency between early and later content than AoC had between Tortage content compared with post-Tortage content.
LANDMINES!
sweet explodey goodness
I agree. The idea that shooting a assault rifle at something gives me health back doesn't work for me, it breaks any sense of immersion as it just seems dumb, non-sensical.
Sounds like fanboi apologetics, been there done that I remember very well the Anarchy Online launch, before that train wreck the fanbois were all swearing left and right there was a new "miracle client" going to be the launch client that fixed all hurts... Needless to say there was no "miracle client".
Well said! Agree!
Like to know that myself, no idea what it's supposed to mean - the interviewer should have got some kind of info...
It probably seems non-sensical to you because you just didn't get the reason behind it. There is a very valid and reasoned lore behind why, you just have to actually pay attention and not WOW-Skip through quests, cutscences, lore discoveries and NPC dialogue.
The biggest problem I see with the game is actually going to be the players. People that are unwilling to adapt, don't pay attention, fail to be able to remember critical information and are generally unobservant or impatient I think will have major problems accepting the game. And unfortunately when a player's shortcommings are pointed out it will be the games fault not theirs.
It seems like alot of games that have issues in closed beta have that "miracle patch" that is coming at launch, and I havent played one yet that did....
I played the first beta weekend. Fun experience, but I'm highly concerned that Funcom hasn't shown off any higher level gameplay or content. Sure looks like another AOC launch debacle to me.
If you don't worry about it, it's not a problem.
WoW and Diablo 3 has had a worse launch than AoC and AO from all accounts. EQ2 launch in the EU wasn't that good neither was the EU launch of DAoC. In DAoC the company even gave the EU players free game time for servers closed for a few days.
As for the game its looking good. And I hope they have a smoother launch than AoC, which from what I remeber wasn't that bad. Took a week off work to play the game and was on for most of it without a lot of interuption. Just a pitty to many people rushed to the level cap and left the game to be fair.
I've seen too many bad launches as well as games that don't hold my interest for more than a couple of months... I think I will give this one at least 3 months before I buy to see how it launches and how they develop the game in it's inital stages. Maybe just wait fro the trial...
I dont understand the logic behind bundling the leach healing with assault rifles. It would go better with melee, fist weapons. And the hot healing from fist weapons would go better with ranged, assault rifles or pistols.
Alltogether; I was expecting bit more freedom when it comes to classes since this was supposed to be classless mmo. But to me it seems; Your weapon of choise = your class.
But my open beta char still managed to be melee dd/tank/healer so its still better that the wow clones around. But it left me hoping for more.
The crucible cutscene clearly shows that Anima magic manifest using your weapon. They're not normal guns or sword or anything. The bullets are magical.
That's what you get for not paying attention. You complain about dumb, non-sensical stuff.
