2) How do you know your father is snooping? Maybe he is simply using your PC for his own reasons, you know, keeping his PC clean in case Mom is checking on HIS pc. It could be your Dad that wants the privacy of your room to "browse" the internet.

Why not ask your Dad what is going on, you know say something like "Hey Dad, my PC files look different, have you been on my computer?" easy enough right At least then the ice is broken and he will either tell you that he is using it, is checking on you, or will hide the fact from you. In the case he says "No son, not me" You can then say....."Wow Dad, maybe someone from the internet is trying to hack me...I think I will start locking this PC up with login passwords and other file protection software." If he says that he is using your PC from time to time then you can simply say, "Oh, OK Dad, I think I will sit up our own logins so we do not get your stuff mixed up" Then you can set up the logins and either share your personal folders or not. If he says "Yes son I have been checking up on what you are doing." Then you can reply, "Dad, Im 18 (or almost 18) do you think that is necessary?" or something like that. At least it opens the door for more discussion.
All this talk about Hiding, lying, demanding, is disrespectful and does not show good character at your age. Sure at 14 it is the IMMATURE thing to do, but at 18 it is not. It is time to grow up and be a MATURE adult and simply talk to your father about it.

But never have I loved and appreciated my parents more than when they realise they gotta let go some times too, and leave me to my own mistakes. Even though it sometimes hurts me. Children are also going to grow up one day.
Oh, and if it sounded too demanding in my previous post that was my mistake. I didn't mean it that way. But if my parents were looking through my computer I'd feel awkward with it too, so if they were looking for something in particular they should tell me about it.

a usb drive does sound the best route to go if you have files worth hiding for $50+ dollars (i'm sure there are cheaper ones now though). Other than skillful file placement (in some random program file no one ever uses perhaps) there's little I can think of. Just save up for when you can move out!

Your best bet is to talk to your parents imo. Ask if its okay if you have a password, etc.. The worst thing you could do is start some shady practices because if they ever catch on to anything, it'll just hurt their trust in you that much more(it already seems they don't trust you that much to begin with too) and they'll have even more reason to suspect things.

It lets you create a file anywhere on your computer and it uses that file as another drive (like C:). You choose what to call the file and the size of it.

Since you can name it anything that you want it's pretty difficult for someone browsing your computer to come across it and think, "Oh, what's in here?". The worse that can happen is the file can be deleted but I doubt that your dad goes through deleting random files on your computer.
Especially if you give it a name that sounds like it's a system file.
I've used TrueCrypt to create a "partition" onto which I've installed a P2P application. Anything that's downloaded goes straight into the encrypted drive and it basically doesn't exist until I tell TrueCrypt to enable (aka mount) the drive.
Paranoid? Maybe. Or maybe I'm a nerd. Or both. /shrug
I'm glad I don't have this problem anymore... my dad gave up on searching through my computer, simply because i was good at hiding stuff and covering my tracks.
If you've got files to hide, simply dump them deep in your system32 folder... unless he REALLY knows what hes doing, most people area afraid to touch system folders, in fear that they might screw something up. Or you can log off of windows... if he does not know your password then your safe... unless your running pro and you did not change the default admin password. 1. Use Internet Options to delete internet history.
2. Either purchase a USB Keychain drive or format a disk to backup your sotre your "private" files and carry or hide the disk so that your father does not have access to these files.
3. Use a third party program as described by other posters.
4. Assasinate your parents.
5. Choose to give up your computer privacy.
6. Take and hide the power cord to your PC when it is off and your away.
7. Run all programs out of DOS mode... lol.
8. Move out and get a job.
9. Blame your "private" files on your sister.
10. Get rid of and no longer associate with these private files.
11. Make a "Gigantic Folder Grid" as I like to call it and if your father is not smart enough to read the folder size of each of the thousands of folders you put into this one folder followed by other thousands of folder within each folder... To find the folder that hides your "private files" which will be easily accessed by you because you know the appropriate folder name.
12. Mess around with something "private" of your dads such as his wallet or something and tell him you where just watching out for him... (Caution: This may result in serios to extreme ass beating!)
Well, that's pretty much it because I'm bored of typing... I suggest Solutions #4 and #7.
