I don't think the problem is me at all. My problem is that in a day, week, month, or year, wvwvw is going to look exactly the same as the first time I set foot in it. My actions have absolutely zero effect. It's static.
Take a game like Archeage. You build your own castle, defend your territory for resources, live inside your own house. There's incentive to fight for it. It's yours!
If some guild sacks your keep, its gone. The environment changes. The game changes with player actions. GW2 while fun, feels generic.
I have a suggestion for you then, Play Archeage and not GW2. You choose to post here saying you didn't like it, for..whatever reason people do that. However you did say it was opinion, you weren't claiming facts or numbers. Your opinion means nothing to us, and everything to you.
I'm not upset in the slightest that you don't like this game and I can't see a reason other people would be either. If you don't like it, don't play it. Don't have to waste your time telling perfect strangers about it either tho eh?
Rephrase "Your opinion means nothing to us" to "Your opinion means nothing to me", since after all, it is your opinion about his opinion.
yes yes, I'm done babbling in circles about who's opinion matters to whom, as..clearly..it doesn't matter. As for his opinion about being bored with the PVP, I can recognize the reason for his dissent, I just don't come to the same conclusion. I hope the OP finds a game that suits him, after all that's what we all want out of this Genre, and it has let us down lately..
This isn't meant as a troll post. I think the game is fun. And to be fair I haven't done much PvE content yet. But the PvP, while entertaining, is just becoming redundant without any purpose behind it. I guess there's competitive PvP tournaments to look forward to, but the maps are kind of bland. I'm not much of a fan of capture points. I can't see it holding my interest for long. I'd almost rather it just be a straight up arena. WvWvW is just meh. Everything is one big zerg. And yes, I read all about the strategies n such, but in reality it just feels zergy. Without any real incentive for me to be there. I have absolutely no attachment to any of my servers keeps n what not. It just feels kind of stale. Gameplay is cool n all, but I dunno how this game is going to hold my attention for longer than a month or so. It's a PvP game and PvP has no consequence whatsoever. I just wish there was more of a point to it all.
What game really offers maps that are very fun to run solo ALLL the time? I mean even in my favorite FPS's when I play alone I get bored after awhile and log out. When you are competing with a real group in tournaments, the action gets much more intense, and the maps take on new identities because of the macro decisions of teams. That is where the fun and replayability comes in. You have to actually be competing for or playing with friends to make it fun. Pubs are just fun to hop in for a little while to test builds and stuff, how innovative were the WoW arenas? They weren't at all, but because you could compete and had a ladder to climb it was actually fun with a team.
Are there any battlegrounds with a single central keep to fight over? or is it more like WAR where you have mutliple keeps to cap?
Unless there is some sort of world benifit to owning keeps, people (in general) will just cap and zerg to the next keep. While I'm sure there will be a few defended keeps, most won't bother. Seems like a single keep in a battleground will actually be defended, making sieges much more fun and exciting.
Looking forward to playing, so was curious about this.
edit. I see from responses there are some bonuses, so thats good I would still like to see a few BGs with single points to fight over, nothing like a several hour siege to get the blood pumping!
Yes there is a CK, and owning the keeps, supply camps, towers, all contribute to your overall points, and those points tally up and at the end of two weeks there is a winner. You then get PvE bonuses as well for your homeworld, also you move up on the ladder rankings thus there is server pride. There is plenty of reason to PvP. Also, this is beta, of course most servers will be zergy as hell, and the low ranking servers will probably be like that always, but the high ranking servers will have serious guilds with a lot of coordination.

Hold your horses. He is allowed an opinion. He stating wvwvw being static with no effect. I agree with this. There needs to be a reward at the end like an effect on the world. I still dont Get why wvwvw has to go on for weeks before getting a winner. Who can wait that long
I didn't say he wasn't allowed an opinion, nor that you're not. I just don't understand why people feel compelled to let perfect strangers in on their opinion, when those opinions aren't going to hold any bearing on their own opinion.
Basically I'm just saying forums are dumb.
I can respect his and your opinion and disagree with them (which I do) without having to fight tooth and nail about it, I just never could wrap my noodle around why people care to type it out. You make a call, cool...don't need to call the press or nothin' cuz aren't going to be many that care.

As for the paradox, hehe, more like being hipocritical..which it is. I was thinking about that myself. So, in conclusion, Bacon.
Well he brought up a point about wvwvw. I cant see you bringing up any pts regarding what he pointed out

Because I didn't. I don't personally feel I need to barrage you with my opinion on the matter. He doesn't like that it lasts 2 weeks, to him that's too long. Okay, he doesn't like it, I don't feel I need to argue with him about why I may and why he may not.
For your sake, I will say that I particularly enjoy the fact that the contests for WvWvW are long. The server wide bonuses for those matches are great little badges of server pride, and taking time to see the battles ebb and flow is rather enjoyable for me.
NOW my ultimate point here is, If you enjoy it, awesome. Hope to see you in the game, if you don't enjoy it, I'm sorry to hear that and I hope there's something out there for you that you will enjoy. I'm not here to get into a fight over opinions.
The problem is you, not the game. You are never going to enjoy WvW if all you do is join random zergs. You can't be too lazy about it, You have to put in the effort to find a good WvW focused guild that practices strategy and tactics. Again, you aren't going to get that in random zergs.
I agree with this, OP you need to find a team / guild which will make pvp 100% more interesting. Of course pvp / zones will become bland if your running about with random pugs. Theres no better feeling being part of a guild / team who know what they are doing beating superior numbers.
Or
Maybe you are just burned out a bit from mmo's and you are just looking at things negatively just now.
First off, sorry you're not feeling the game OP. Hope you find one that suits you.
Secondly, what exactly are you looking for? It sounds like you want a sandbox, of which this game never claimed to be. There is archeage coming out which has some of the features you are asking for.
As for WvW being 'static' having no change, and no incentive.. I'm sorry, but that is entirely you. As with any game, a certain portion of the enjoyment comes from the mentallity of the player. This game is no different, and I have yet to find any game that everyone likes indiscriminately. The map is constantly influx, very few keeps (even in beta) seem to stay captured forever. There are also things you can do (as a player) to upgrade a keep, and make it more defendable. This adds additional incentive, as it's your hard earned money being poored into a keep / siege weapon, and if you're smart, you won't want that to go to waste. In addition to this, there are very real bonus' that not only apply to PvP, but transfer over into PvE as well.
The mechanics are there, it's up to each player to decide if they want to use them or not. And it sounds as if you just don't want to. Playing on Maguuma I have seen a number of different scenarios in WvW. I have been that solo player in the zerg, trying to get a decent fight going when it just won't happen. I have been that player fighting w/ a decent guild, using tactics & strategy to capture key portions of the map. The difference is night and day.
Like I said, the game is there, as promised. I'm sorry it wasn't for you, and perhaps Archeage is what you are looking for. But to go into a capture-point heavy game, not liking capture points, and being upset that you are just capturing points, seems a bit silly. I'd say Planetside 2 would also be worth a try, but it's essentially the same thing, except on a larger scale, with FPS mechanics, and no PvE. I have a feeling you'd find a way to not like that as well.
I don't think the problem is me at all. My problem is that in a day, week, month, or year, wvwvw is going to look exactly the same as the first time I set foot in it. My actions have absolutely zero effect. It's static.

Believe it or not, there's lots of people who don't like Tetris.
I'm one of them.
I consider Puyo Puyo a far superior puzzle game. :x
I'm a pokemon puzzle person myself. To the OP, the game was designed to eliminate the gear progression grind in favor for gear appearance. They are trying to emphasize the journey not the destination so to speak. It's ok not to like the game as I doubt it is possible to make any product that will have 100% satisfaction. For me, I look forward to this game and PS2 right now. The best part is they each have no monthly fee!
Cheers!
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
Battlegrounds are just battlegrounds and some players love to do them over and over again. WvWvW will take some time until the majority of players have figured it out. Then it will be great and of course you should join a guild. Ok, you cannot build your own castle and it cannot be destroyed. But this kind of content creates additional problems. So far GW2 is the only MMO out there that has convincing pvp on a large scale with sieges, three factions and all the stuff we want.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
I don't mean to assume anything about anyone here, but I completely agree with the people saying it just sounds like it's not for you.
I'll give an example. I play a lot of of Team Fortress 2, and you could apply the same thing you said about GW2 to it and be completely right. There's no incentive to play. You're not going to get rewarded with a bunch of stuff in game for just playing it (the whole weapon drop system aside - you get what I'm saying).
So why do you play? You don't have any incentive to go play a few rounds. You don't have any attachment to your control points.
It's because you're having fun. Have we really all gotten so caught up in the Skinner Box formula that we can't comprehend an MMORPG that's just a game meant to be fun? Personally, I'd still do WvWvW even if you got absolutely nothing from it. Because I enjoy it.

See that is one of the main problems for me.
A MMO shouldn't be able to be compared to an arcade FPS. It's even worse when considering the scope for skill in an FPS is a lot broader than in GW. The two types of games give different feelings and I don't play MMOs for the quick funbeans FPSs give me.
I like long winded MMOs without instant gratification, with tasks others might see as monotonous. They give you the feeling of accomplishment.
Am I on my own on this, is fun just fun..?
I think I need to keep remembering that GW2 is not sub-based, meaning they don't really need any form of carrot on a stick at all.

If everything is a "zergfest" then you are doing it wrong; and there is a point to WvWvW PVP, did you notice the buffs?
I agree, the game is sorely in need of an RR system like DAOC had. Where you could gain new abilities and stats to improve your character through PvP. Buffs, achievments, cosmetic shit.? All that stuff is pretty fuckin lame.
I've said this before, it's a good game, but it's not going to keep my attention for any longer than a playthrough on one character. Well, I hope it will last that long for me anyway.

Thanks for the majority of the feedback. Really great community here. Whether people agree or not its nice to be able to discuss things without a flame war.
It's not that I dislike guild wars 2. It just feels so casual. It's hard for me to become invested. It's a lot of fun for a couple hours. Maybe my problem was I played allday.
I actually don't play any MMO's. Definitely not gear grinders. I knew what GW2 was when I bought it and feel they delivered on their promises.
The things I really like about the game are the class designs and combat. I enjoy weapon swapping quite a bit. I also hope future games copy the leveling process.
I don't think the problem is me at all. My problem is that in a day, week, month, or year, wvwvw is going to look exactly the same as the first time I set foot in it. My actions have absolutely zero effect. It's static.

Posting your opinion on an MMO on an MMO forum??? What madness is that???
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
The OP is a gear centric player, looking for some meaning to his time playing, like some shiney armor that he can /faceroll other players with.
And GW2 is simply not that game.
It doesn't have to be gear though. I'll wait with GW2 until release when I will most surely buy it, but what I am missing so far from reading/watching it IS meaning to the pvp.
To me meaning would be factions and lore making sense for the pvp, servers fighting against eachother just makes it bland to me. At least in DAoC you have your, very different from eachother, faction to fight for.
Even better in a game like Darkfall or Eve where you have player built and player/clan owned structures to fight for. Those things are important for immersion, that YOU and your clan and/or faction can change the world for real.
I've seen this 5 or 6 times since last night in three different post. If uou don't like Gw2, that means your tired of mmos?
That's because the vast majority of things people complain about in GW2 are also present in most other MMO's (and most of the complains arise from people not understanding the game).
For example:
"The dynamic events don't change the world" - Neither do the quests in any other current MMO (And DE's DO change the world, just not as obviously or radically as people think).
"Combat is 1234" - It's not, but even if it was so is the combat in most other MMO's.
"Exploration is too obvious" - Which is worse than the complete lack of exploration incentives in other games how?

/facepalm
We've know for about a year that WvWvW was going to be independent of the game world. If you are disappointed that's just your own unbased assumptions not matching reality.
Maybe u should /facepalm current publishers for not having the balls to make games with risks and consequences. Trying to make games where everyone wins all the time and eeryone is the hero is like being an overprotective parent and itskilling the genre.
Huh? What you just said has almost no relevance to my quote nor your own.
I called you out for complaining about something that was never advertised or even hinted. Complaining that WvWvW doesn't change the game world is like complaining that your car doesn't have a built in coffee brewer.
Yep. GW2 isn't competing against other MMO's for my attention. Because white frankly most other MMO's bore me too. It's competing against real life. It's fun for a bit but the lack of incentive and consequence makes it become rather repetitive.
Something simple like the winning server in WvWvW has exclusive access to a dungeon would do wonders for immersion imo.

-sorry for any grammar errors; lack of sleep.
Yes.
You can have longwinded MMO-gameplay; that doesn't make you want to claw your eyes out of sheer boredom every second.
Too many players have never known anything else, hence why, MMO == Grind to them.
If you like grinding, fine. Lots of people enjoy Diablo as well. Just stop saying that games that don't focus primarily on grinding, aren't MMOs.
I've seen this 5 or 6 times since last night in three different post. If uou don't like Gw2, that means your tired of mmos?
You not alone at all. This is why I left WoW.
Posting your opinion on an MMO on an MMO forum??? What madness is that???
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.
Huh? What you just said has almost no relevance to my quote nor your own.
I called you out for complaining about something that was never advertised or even hinted. Complaining that WvWvW doesn't change the game world is like complaining that your car doesn't have a built in coffee brewer.
Something simple like the winning server in WvWvW has exclusive access to a dungeon would do wonders for immersion imo.
