If I love roleplaying, which mmo ? This been asked before btw?

Hi there!
I must admit, seeming you people here know a lot about mmorpg's (doh!), I have hidden motives for joining this forum.. I was wondering;
Which mmorpg has best support for roleplaying ?

A few other things I would consider;
- Graphics does not matter much, the same with sound.
- Price does not matter much.
- Community is important, I don't like playing a whole hour without meeting anyone who atlestwants to interact However I would rather walk longer to meet someone interesting than meeting 20 people and none of them has anything other to say than "I am leet, you are loot!".
- Customizability (typo? anyway I mean being able to look as unique as possible) is also more important factor for me. For example houses and pets are nice additions.

Uhmm.. my medic.. *cough* playing history may be appropriate too? for you good online shamans to help me with my issue?

Played Ultima Online for 6 years with lots of vacations from it. I would still play it, but.. well..
Tried Horizons for 2 months (had too, the game has the same bithday as me! :) ) can't remember talking to anyone in-game, and serious lack of soul..
Played World of Warcraft, the minors and leet people are too much for me who want to roleplay, even on the roleplaying servers! Although I must admit I am at awe and love the world the game is in.

P.S. Didn't find a search function in the forums yet.. so I'm sorry if this has been asked 20 times before.. please give me a link then or something. In advance thank you!

FFXI is a great game.... you have to give it a chance at first though can be a little boring, umm pretty much everyone in that game speaks english or japanese most of the people i met were extremely kool, lots of nice people great community. The graphics are not to good but they are not tha bad either, easily with standable.

    LOTS OF GREAT EQUIPS!

    Check it out...

Thank you, I will try it out. Never was a huge FF fan, except for the first 5 games, kind of lost it at ff8 I think.

Lots of people will give different opinions about this... here's mine:

All games have people who are role playing. EQ2 has interesting RP elements (a whole /rp Mode!). WoW has RP servers, but often is a mix between RP and non-RP people. EVE has a mix of RP and non-RP. Ryzom I haven't been in lately cause I haven't played in like a year. FFXI I dunno, haven't played in a year.

Basicly all games will have RP and non-RP community. You're going to have to look threw and find 1 you fit in. I hear if you really don't care about graphics, EQ1 boasts the best current RP community still active. Most the l33t people bailed and all the RPers stuck around. I'm not sure, but I heard this... made sense, cause all the l33t people went to WoW and other high end games, leaving the older games for other people. The problem being that in order to truely enjoy EQ1, you have to go buy the full fledge package (Game+expansions)... don't let people fool you, it's actually still a popular game (I know several people still playing it).

I value all opinions! Thank you for yours! You seem to know your way around, I shall try to look up some everquest trial.. wish me luck :)
I got EQ2 and Eve online on download as I post now.

*edit: easily found trial at main site, and to my great amazement and surprise, the game even supports mac!!

In my opinion (also a hard care roleplayer) there is NO mmorpg currently out that fits the bill.  None are more than hack and slash games at the very best.  They do not support nor promote roleplay as you are likely to mean it at all.

If you truly want to roleplay, then play pen and paper roleplay games or (if you really want to be online) join a good roleplay oriented chat room (next best thing to pen and paper with local friends).  For good roleplay one needs people with good imaginations and the willingness to play roles - and a good GM.  In MMORPGs the computer is "supposed" to take the place of the GM, but to date no game has even come close to trying to do this.

    Good luck.

Hehe, I can't offer much help on this, I can just say World of Warcraft is not to great, I tried a rp server for a bit, and just wow, lol just wow ;( I won't even go there. My first month of play was on an RP server and I just hung that up and played the rest of my WoW career on a pvp server ;b

  • zharotzharot Member Posts: 15

Oh, I do play pen&paper games. It's just that I live in a small town on the coast of norway with too few people in it for a fully thriving community. The chatrooms are nice, but in my experience only one powerplayer can almost ruin a whole game. But your point is noted, appreciated and respected.
There is no right answer to my question as people have different views to what roleplay is. But I really appreciate all the help I get here :)

Yes, the WoW RP servers were PvE, with characters in god-mode. Which really doesn't encourage rp if you can't attack your natural enemies.. They promised us RP-PvP servers with no eta months ago, meanwhile I played PvP too.. almost reached end-lvl and well.. it simply got boring. Think I was 54 or something. Always loved blizzard, uptill this game..

Well actually they finally got around to making those :b, There coming out next patch to my knowledge :D

I was gonna try them out but I am burned out on the game, and it would be to hard for me to just start completly over on a new server :b.

Still browsing for a new game myself :D

That's so typical, when I despice the game, they get what I wanted. Guess they won't be even 50% roleplayers even.. hope I'm wrong.
This wasn't a easy question, but I am slightly relieved to hear that other's have some of the same urges as myself. Wish game creators would consider what mmorpg stands for sometime.. would it be so wrong as to call wow, daoc etc mmog's ?

I would Recommend Dark and Light, very RP friendly and the community is the best

Nah there will be a lot of roleplayers IMO on those servers, cuz they are releasing more normal and pvp servers at the same time.

PVP players that don't want to roleplay but want a fresh start will most likely roll on those new pvp servers, not the rp-pvp ones.

However, most of the RP ppl that have wanted the pvp-rp servers from day one, those will be the ppl you see on the rp-pvp servers.

And if those players have survive this long, one could hope that a lot of the ppl that were honeslty ruining the rp servers from what i saw early on won't be there anymore.

So in all seriousness I don't think the rp-pvp servers communities will be that bad at all, and I think will have a lot of decent rpers from the RP realms, like I said before ppl not interested in rp but want a fresh start will roll on the same time release pvp and normal servers :)

Just what I know :b, in case you still wanted to give wow rp-pvp servers a shot :O

I would have to agree with Joey, no true rpg games are out now, some people try to roleplay and as they do this you see other people do this... /shout Shut up noob, noone wants to hear gnomish... then ihave to do this /ignore and go back to playing a mmorpg solo because no one remembers what pen and paper was all about. But there are quite a few games out there that you can play that are not mmorpg that might hold you over till something comes along...but I will let other posters tell you about them cuz my kids are going insane or is it me who is going insane?image

This topic has appeared before, but is likely buried a few pages deep.

JoeyNipps is correct, there are no current MMORPGs that really support roleplaying.  A few have tried, but it is mainly players with the support of game mechanics that allows social roleplaying.  This support is sorely lacking.

The only recommendations I can make would be persistent worlds of Neverwinter Nights.  There are some highly rated so look around.  Generally, players create and run the "worlds" for other players to travel in and, as such, screen applicants with character biographies.

Second, would be Adellion, www.adellion.com that seems to have a game mechanic that will require roleplaying.

If you or any can find a MMORPG where the developers have solid rules for social roleplaying and player conduct, and players (community) that respects the game, please let me know.  I'm looking also.

I thought SWG was set up very well for role playing, but in any game it doesn't matter how well it is set up for RPing if no one RPs. I used to just hang out in the cantinas in SWG though, between solo trips of exploring planets looking for creatures to sample (BE) and babies to tame (CH). I still think about playing it again at times, but then I think about how bad the game part of it was and I don't. I may give it another spin one of these days to try out the new combat revamp to see if it helped game play in any way.

One tip on trying to find role players in any game you choose is to look for official or unofficial RP servers. They usually aren't full of hard core RPers, but they at least tend to keep out those who distract from the ability to RP.

I've stopped searching for RP-friendly games atm. I'm waiting for Darkfall Online ( www.darkfallonline.com ) and Pirates of the Burning Sea.

I'm trying to avoid games like Middle-Earth Online (Lord of the Rings online?) cause commercial games like these seems to attract a lot of leet-kids. image

City of Heroes has the best costumisation in your 4 costumes(outfits), if you see someone wearing a costume like you, you know that your imagination is the problem. image

City of Heroes has the best community I ever experience. Happy players make a good community, the many Issues are detrimental to the community, but it survive.

A shaman is what you usually play? Go for a defender or a controller then and pick whichever Primary and secondary fit you best as a support class. The bubbles maker are definitely the most wanted, maybe a tadbit boring, but you will get groups easily (they make shield to deflect attacks, great powers).

CoH however is only about hunting the mobs endlessly. With CoV soon it will add some PvP, nicely I hope. This suit me perfectly, but some peoples want other stuff then hunting. Leveling up is simple and efficient, quite reguliar in what you do, so stability and understanding...and simplicity. The game is set in a persistant world, but you are free to starts instanced mission or TFs(big missions) as often as you wish. The travel powers and system outmatch everything I see elsewhere, it is a GREAT way to travel around, I dont want to say anything, but you will see 4 alternatives to travel, and the simplest is flying better then a griphon in the direction YOU want, so I will let you discover the others 3.

Myself quit CoH a long long time ago, for the same reason I quit or didnt join most MMOs and stick to non-MMOs for now...cant stand a raid ending in a game. That's been said, they may remove that Hamidon or make it useless with new levels and never replace with a bad raid ending again. If all MMOs have a bad raiding ending, nothing force me to play in MMOs, I can play other games, when a nice MMO will not end in a fish tail raiding way, I will consider it.

The Saga of Ryzom has a fantastic community and Roleplay is extreamly common. You can go up to someone in character and often get an in character response. Its a great game too, loads of GM and nevrax run events, from RP to invasions, good combat system and lots of content coming up.

But the community and RP is a key section of the game and from what you've said in your first post you should love it.

Oh and best of all :) Noone uses leet :P

    I wanted to add something:

If graphics don't matter at all, go play a MUD. It's garunteed RP experience on lots of MUDs, cause to get into the game you have to submit character backstories.

UO on some open pvp private shards.

I thank the community here for such a swift reply! All of you are a credit to this forum. I only asked 12 hours ago and now I got weeks of testing to do. Currently trying EQ2 and EQ.
Muds would be the best, yes. Completely agree! I used to play muds before UO came out. If I come to believe I have found a game which supports RP to my extent, I shall post it here. Meanwhile thanks again guys!

P.S. If you know of a game that isn't listed here , I would still love to hear about it.

  • MokiiMokii Member Posts: 23

Yeah I was trying the EQII last night, I mean its probably a good game n all but the graphics turned me off (not saying there bad graphics just don't like the visual apperence of anything in the game so far :b)

Gonna try you FFXI!! If all fails spellborn looks like it has the cartoony style I like :D!!!

I might keep trying EQII a bit more though >< what server are you on ;b

  • zharotzharot Member Posts: 15

Yeah, the graphics are new and flashy, but they lack soul in my opinion. I tried the second RP server which was the only server with a medium population (last on list, don't remember name, was two words).
Met 2 roleplayers out of 10 there, but no leet kids yet. The emotes are very good, but no voice for the character you play.. and I loved the fact that if you enable role play mode, your name goes pink and it makes it a lot easier to roleplay.
But I seriously hope for their sake they make a new tutorial or something. Loved the ship part, but once I got on the Trial Island it wasn't fun anymore. I will play it a bit further though. I am named Zharot in game. I'll edit in the server name when the servers come back up.

  • CaesarsGhostCaesarsGhost Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 2,136

The heavily populated was probably "Antonous Bayle". That was the server I played on.

I personally prefer lower pop servers... The game isn't the Trial of the Isle, that's just the n00b area. :-D

I'd get on and play with you, but I'm currently engaged elsewhere. And I lost my EQ2 DVD.
