It's a strange question for an MMORPG forum, most, if not all, around here play MMORPGs, but you might have friends or family members that actually hate them for one reason or another. So what reasons people give for NOT playing MMORPGs?

I hear it all but compared to a night down the pub playing an mmo is cheaper ^^
But the difference is I won't stop going out to the pub But yeah for me it was never the sub. 9 quid a month is nothing.
My reasons for not playing them is that I am kinda sick of RPGs in general. I am kinda sick of the whole leveling thing and gearing up your character. This has also killed a lot of other RPGs for me.
They are also very time consuming. I can no longer spent so much time playing a game. I often play between 5-10 hours a week which is not enough for an MMO.
They are pointless and they leave this feeling of crap in my mouth. They are way tooo grindy. There too many time sinks to keep you subbed that it sucks all the fun out of the game.
Once I've plaed several now they all look identical to me.
Lack of story.
Lack of meaningful character customisation.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
Most people I know that won't play them do it because they associate them with the worst kind of nerds possible.
In a sense, they are kinda right, but they are the kind of dudes that drink mountain dew and yell, and like to wrestle and swear it's not gay.

I know a couple of people, including my boyfriend, who won't play because it's not a productive use of time. That's not specific to MMO games, though. They won't play any video games. And, according to them, nobody else should either, because there are better things they could be doing.
I don't feel the need to be productive all the time. Sometimes I like to have fun. Sometimes I like to zone out for a while... But some people have to fill every single second with something meaningful. (I do get the whole mortality argument, but, seriously, you're going to die no matter what, so why not be happy? Heh.)
Time commitment.
I had to give up my favorite MMOs for about a year after my child was born because I couldn't go afk for extended periods of time in a FFA loot game at the drop of a hat.
In the past I've had to seriously cut back because of work as well.
The above is my personal opinion. Anyone displaying a view contrary to my opinion is obviously WRONG and should STHU. (neener neener)

Not everyone is rolling in the $$$$.
To each there own right?
My reasons: I tend to smoke to much while playing.
Other peoples reasons: Its addictive, too violent and sometime s flat out not cool.
Funny thing is, sitting around with people at the bar drinking or resturant eating or at home watching TV really dosent sell me that the 'other life' is really better. That said, motorcycling, intense cycling, water skiing and sky diving kind of perks my intrest

he was saying that other people tell him that one of the problems of gaming is that its costly.
its not costly by any stretch of the imagination.

I haven't played any MMOs in a while now; I guess it is because the moment-to-moment gameplay is not as fun (compared to non-MMO games), so overall the amount of fun I have is fairly low compared to the time investment I would have to put in.
I haven't really played an MMO for a while (if you don't count my one weekend playing TSW beta to test it out).
My reason is that the game needs to be extraordinarily well-done (by my own tastes of course) for me to want to play it, as it requires a significant time investment. If it's "sort of Okay" than I won't play it. This narrows down the field quite a bit, and means years between MMOs that I play. A single-player game that is "Okay" usually is enough for me (i.e. Diablo 3), mainly because the investment of time and energy is rather minimal compared to an MMO.
The pay-off is that when I do find that awesome MMO, I enjoy it immensely. By far my favorite genre of video-gaming, I'm just extremely picky.

Why play mmo's when there are tons of games on services like Steam at the fraction of price with better game play. Multiplayer games come in all forms not just mmo's.
1. If you are a former MMORPG player that think all new games are bad.
2. Quest hubs on rails design.
3. Quest based leveling.
4. Hand holding.
5. Instances.
6. Dumbed down mechanics and character building intended for mainstream consumers.
7. F2P...(If you are a hardcore P2P supporter)
8. Lobby game design with no open virtual world.
9. Graphics are to childish and silly.
10. Mobs, npc:s, the story or/and the world is boring, to childish and silly or just mainstream because not wanting to offend anyone.
100% right
But those are not reasons to not play mmorpgs, but to not play themeparks
we dont have any SB to play atm, since all are poor quality games
But after archeage and the mmorpg games developed adter him,you will be able to spend just 1 hour a day
-fighting for the objective you just want, not necessarly questing, instancing for lvl or gear
-again,no lvl or class, usualy skill based system has a fast char progression, leaving the diference in power to players smatness or skills
-Many choices has game objective, that culd be: dedication to your guild wars, your personal pvp vendetas, follow the lore quests of the game, your own housing like farm, shop, comerce char build etc...exploration (since SB game maps tends to be huge and singlw server)
By the way,one of the things in entropia universe i most love was TP running, where i charge ppl to lead em to find TPs and to find my own still not "covered" areas, find new ore or mobs to know they loot rate etc

OH look a guy praising a game they haven't actually played for an extended amount of time and probably wont play till late 2013 at the earliest.
I would say stagnance. It's like I've been playing the same game for 10 years or more and the only thing that changes are the names of skills and the graphics.
The community is ok on average, I think SC2 might have the worst community in general.
I've been playing MMOs since 1999 (and MUDs since about 1992), and my tastes have become very defined at this point. We learn what we do and don't like as we go along, and the industry has largely shifted in directions I don't like. That's not anybody's fault, and I certainly don't have an "I'm right and they're wrong!" attitude about it, but my interest in MMOs has completely faded as a result. I still visit this site to see if something more in my preference bracket is available, but it's been a fruitless pursuit for the past several years.
For some of the specific reasons I don't play MMOs anymore:
I have to admit that there are one or two people I have looked at and said "you have a demanding career, a large family and productive hobbies ... you do not want to be playing these games."
$50 for client and $180 for a years subscription is quite expensive for one video game.
Even if you get a thousand hours of gameplay out of it, it's still only one game.

23 cents an hour for entertainment? That's a fantastic deal in my opinion.
Personally it's playing other games with better ROI on Fun vs. Time Investment.
