Does anyone play MMO's for any other reason than the chance to insult others?

Really, this is just killing online gaming all together.

It seems to me that the only enjoyment people find anymore is insulting other people.    That's disgusting and sad.

When did this happen?  I know that "people have always been [insert candy-coated negative label]" but it's just gotten so bad now that I find it UNAVOIDABLE as long as I'm at a computer.

Why is it that the only feedback from others is negative?  Why are people so quick to jump to the chance to insult or belittle others?

Why is it that when I'm reading a relevant thread or writing my own that it's more important for readers to respond with things like  "too long, didn't read"   or  "QQ MOAR NOOB"  or  "lolz you spelled it wrong.  stopped reading."   or  "L2P noobs!"  etc??

is this really the only atmosphere available now?     This is depressing and It's caused me to not even bother logging on to games anymore...

    It's because they're sheep.

The world is full of sheep.

    Don't be a sheep.

It does seem to be the pattern doesn't it? Not just in game land but in the real-life area as well.

Have we become so disconnected from each other?

Meh, this is life in general. I don't worry about a bunch of nerds that can talk big through a keyboard. Face to face is what counts...tis only a game.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

    You're probably right...

but still, it's not just the "i'm too A.D.D. to read" crowd... I'm also concerned about the 'average gamer' in general.   Many of my irl aquaintences as well as family members are gamers, and I'm slowly but surely losing the enjoyment of being in their company.

I hate listening to my nephew play his Xbox Live because of the way he talks to others... and then sometimes he'll take out his headphones and let the sound play through speakers and I can hear all the other players and they are even worse.

And on MMORPGs, it seems that same immature, rude, disgusting, ignorant crowd has completely pushed the decent non-sociopathic players out.      How did this happen, and why is it getting worse and not better?

Why are most of the people even on this site, reading this thread RIGHT NOW, ready to flame any and everyone the first chance they get?

    Why do people troll?

What is so enjoyable about pissing people off and making 1 less person available to enjoy entertainment with?

Why is it ok to be entertained by hurting others?

    Shouldn't that be illegal?

btw... i'm waiting for someone to prove my point by clicking on me and searching through all of my past posts over the years so they can find some response between me and someone else that may have had an arguement or heated discussion so they can cut and paste it or link it here in a reply...

all so they can call me a hypocrite, or something else equally meant to make them seem superior or smarter.

Proving my point that it's more important for too many people to be combative and insulting and belittling, rather than attempting to be friendly, helpful and informative.

Just a heads up, it's coming.

The only people I make fun of in video games are my friends.

Because honestly, what's the point to playing games with friends if you can't comment negatively on their fashion or playstyle or whatever?

I think its a lack of morals. Each generation of people are getting worse and thier children are becoming more feral.Don't get me wrong there are loads of great kids still out there but the majority of them were brought up properly and unfortunatly the few spoil it for the many.Hell, when I was a teenager I thought we were bad lol. When we  had fights it was fists now its 15 on one and knives bottles all sorts. There are places in the UK that police don't even go :(

I put it down also to political correctness, when I was a kid I respected my teacher, police, emergency services etcetera and would never of been even cheeky with them because they could slap me around the head lol.Now its suspension and compensation if you do way less than that.Prison guards calling prisoners 'sir'.Teachers can't even hug a child that hurts themselves or put a band aid on a cut without having someone there to witness it and fire engines/ambulances are bombarded with bricks when they try and do thier jobs.

Its disgusting,I feel your pain my friend :(

    Everything is backwords.

Its funny, with all this social media like facebook, twitter, etc we have become more and more disconnected.  Strange when you think of it.

The way I figure it, I see what I stare at.  To appreciate the good people (and there are many), I have to turn my back on the ones who are bothering me.

    Anonymity

Basically a bunch of weak pathetic people that hide behind a screen.

I'm sure the majority of these people would never say a hurtful thing to anyone in fear of retaliation.

    Welcome to the internet.

    Playing: Nothing

    Looking forward to: Nothing

People's conversations revolve around making impulsive, snide comments about anything and everything in an ever escalating war to see who's the 'most right'. It's a sign, among many others, that society is completely driven by narcissism and the unwilingness to be flexible in our perceptions. It has been this way for a long long time but it keeps getting worse due to both negative reinforcement from the various forms of media, and the fact that the internet has vastly expanded our capability to anonymously converse with each other by a factor of about a gajillion.

In other words, people think it's fun to be a jerk on the internet. Their threshold for entertainment is informed by their narrow perspective.

One way to deal with it is to find people that aren't insane and befriend them.

That's my take on it anyways. image

It's always fun to blame something intangible like "society".  That way nobody really takes the blame and nothing needs to be done about it.  It's the great cop out of our time.

Yes everything is backwards, instead of blaming a person for their actions we blame "society".

“There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.”

MMORPGs were not always about insulting people.  When I played everquest and FFXI insults were rare and people worked together.  Since WoW things have gone downhill.  I'm not saying people wouldn't get into fights before WoW, but since the WoW model was adopted the players became impossible to satisfy.  The games are ugly now.  The people talk and act ugly.  I can't believe people play the games still.  My roomate would play the new star wars MMO and the things he would say to people and people would say to him was disgusting.  One time they even got into a fight over who was better at insulting...... wtf

Aside from the anonymiity of the internet, in MMORPGs anyway, I feel the influx of people that would normally play consoles also leads to this type of behavior.

As far as forums go, they are kind of like the Special Olympics where we are all winners and we all get hugs, can't tell the truth or you get in hot water, so that leaves people with no place to talk their trash except in the games...

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

Ok well, I'm glad I'm not alone in this.

Any of you friendly people who aren't like the people I described playing anything that I might enjoy in terms of community?

I want to make FRIENDS in my games, not enemies.   I like to share experiences and adventures, and I like to help people.

I was an EVE advocate for a long time, simply because of what it offers 'on paper' -- but unfortunately, as great as it is, there are some bad aspects that trump the good for me.   For instance; If you're not in a megacorp or alliance, you aren't going to find friendly people as often as you find people who get their enjoyment out of grieving and tears.

I get my enjoyment out of adventure, customization, fine tuning, building, sharing, socializing, and making friends.

    Any suggestions?

PS:  As a side note, anyone who claims to love the 'tears' from others, i.e. those that would say such things as "keep the tears flowing, noobs" are the lowest form of human cancer in gaming, and are also responsible for promoting such an anti-social community.        I am ashamed to call myself a gamer these days.

There sadly does seem to be a downwards trend in games, I perscribe to the practice of "Do to other's as you would like to be done to".

If I see someone struggling I do stop and help or send a helpfull message in chat. I gave away some gear to a complete stranger in Rift the otherday and they were over the moon and very grateful. They also pointed out that no one does that anymore. I feel like a dying breed of gamer, it's all need need need these days. Must have the best gear before any one else even if it means treading on someone else's feelings.

Which sadly I do see spilling over into the real world, everyone seems to buy everything. Even if they can't afford it, slap it on credit mentality. Kids have more presents at chrismass than they know what to do with, my nephew and nices are usualy still opening presents at easter.

I do feel this is all adding to and compounding issues that people do not appreciate material propety as much anymore and spend less time interacting with people properly as they playing with the latest gadget.

I will stop before I start to rant on about what's wrong with the world, there is still a lot of good out there I'm certain.

I'm now also looking for a new gaming home as Trion seem to have made some terrible decisions with Rift lately, if anyone finds a nice game with great community let us know pls!

Blame, in a large part, the reliance and focus on PvP in these games over the years.

It really has helped attract the dregs of the internet to MMOs and created a culture of vain egocentric hostility.

Base your gameplay on grinding the other guy into the dirt in mostly solocentric environments and this is what you end up with.

    @ OP

    This is just a guess:

I think people that give these negative replies have self esteem issues.

Their own life isn't what they feel it should be. So, to feel better about themselves

they try to look "better" than others by writing something negative and seem witty.

This is only a guess, but I base it off people I know IRL. Each of the people I know IRL

that act this way, are unhappy with their own lives.

For what ever reason, being negative gives a few brief moments of joy.

It's not about fighting, it's about balance. It's not about enlightenment, it's about balance. It's not about balance.

Older/Niche/Low population games tend to have the best communities. Ryzom, Vanguard, FFXI/XIV, Wakfu, etc..

    Wouldn't recommend anything PvP-oriented.

    ;s1fu71:

I have no doubt that what you said is completely relevant, but I feel like there could be more to it somehow.   Just as you said, even based off IRL encounters and affiliates, acting like this is not the only trait linked to unhappiness, or happiness for that matter.

It seems to me that, by default, there is a commonality between the types of people I brought up in my OP, and the type on the other end of the string.   That commonality of course being the interest in video games, or at very least, the interest in that particular video game or genre.     So, I then start to feel like it's somehow being pulled into the 'sports' universe of entertainment, from it's original position of 'video games' -- considering there's this overly extreme competitve vibe that myself and apparently, other people are turned off by who never wanted to engage in 'sports' level of competition in the first place.

It's quite awkward, to say the least, playing in this environment as someone who isn't interested in that sort of mindset.

I think that maybe, like others have said as well, a hard to ignore example of this habitat is the current trends in the pvp approach?  More specifically, the rift between the "two opposing teams;  PVErs vs PVPers"

Not that I don't enjoy pvp in certain games.    I love pvp "when done [right]" but I don't feel that I should have to choose between either or.

    What do you think?
