As long as people want to pay them to provide the expanded/ongoing/monthly content they're going to keep the current business model.  It doesn't mean that they plan to go F2P in 5 years if the game is still widly successful.

even he knows it will go f2p, we should not close our eyes to the obvious.

Im pretty sure it wont take 5 years to go f2p. As a matter of fact their cash shop is a direct result of knowing they will be f2p at some point. How things are going in the industry and the more competition they get the faster that will be.

Uh yeah, while I think they should wait for a free trial I wouldn't wait that long.

    Lol

They will definitely go f2p at some point and probably in less than five years but it won't be any time remotely soon.

I can pretty much guarantee it will be F2P before this year is up. This is FunCom remember. I am sure most of this content they are releasing was done before releasing the game. If not, and they can keep pumping it out, then maybe. I just don't have much faith in FunCom due to past releases. We'll see though.

cmon freedom, do you really expect this game to last long as a p2p game? I know you and others like the game but its pretty easy to see how the market is changing, just look at the recent post at massively:

    http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/07/12/report-global-mmo-spending-to-top-12-billion-in-2012/

I love GW2 but I know that if it were p2p it would go f2p in a jiffy, cause there arent enough people willing to pay for subs anymore with the vast amount of cheaper options. Sure fans like you and me are willing, but we are only a handfull and cant sustain the amount of money needed for a game like TSW to keep putting out top quality content.

It makes sense what they did though, they use subs for a while so they can get some cash first hand and then take advantage of the influx they will get from f2p. Pretty smart move, but I don't see how this game or Tor or Tera or Rift for that matter can stay p2p for long.

I already answered you before in my earlier post. is Rift F2P yet? No. Why? Most likely because, i don't know, it updates frequently and keeps the subers happy.

TSW having a cash shop and a LTS can be an indicator that it will tunr F2P. I get it, trust me. However, like i said before, have you ever considered that maybe they have the CS to not have to go F2P in the first place?

P2P goes F2P to get a cash shop, but if it's already there, the only benefit is getting more players. Howver, if the core playerbase is big enough, happy paying a sub and wasting on the cs, while getting updates (again, this is if they deliver of course) and FC is getting money, why would they ever even switch to F2P?

The CS is probably a security mesure, yes, but, that doesn't mean they'll ever have to use. get it?

if you are on the fence, you probably should try to get a buddy key.  Waiting on it to become F2P could end up in something like waiting for the last Duke Nukem to go live.

There's nothing to disagree or agree about Kuppa. You can't state your opinion as fact. Like i said, TSW's model can be an indication of going F2P in 1 year or simply that it's designed from the start to remain P2P.

I don't have a crystal ball, so i don't know. In the ned, what i do think we can agree on is that, if P2P is working for Funcom with the Cash Shop, why would they change? If the game is profitable, with a cs already in place, going F2P is actually a huge risk. IMHO, as long as P2P is working and making money, it will stay that way. If not, switch. Simple.

Which wil happen? Well, we can't jump ahead in time, so we play the waiting game image

Ragnar actually said this was the case.  The whole changing the world and having NPCs die and stories evolve with new content every month can only be done with a sub model.

I doubt it. Unless as you said they fail to manage the game properly or don't do regular updates. I don't have a lot of faith in FC either but so far outside the chat channel debacle and some bugged quests they've done a fairly good job here.

...and for once they don't have a clusterfuck of issues they have to work at to remedy before actually adding more meat to the game.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

What a load of rubbish; The game is great in comparrison to what is currently being released. For the price of a night out youl get months of great gameplay.

He wasn't really presenting his opinion as fact. He used the fact that the majority of gamers DO NOT play P2P games. Nor do the majority of MMO gamers. His opinion is that FC made the CS as an extra resource that can be implemented to a greater extent for F2P, and, truthfully, the fact that they are adding 2 more malls ASAP (they are some of the new features that Ragnar said they wanted to add in the August update), shows that Kuppa's opinion here is VALID. Your opinion is valid, too, but your accusation toward Kuppa is inappropriate, because he keeps just arguing his opinion and back up his opinion, using facts to back up said opinion.

EDIT: My personal opinion of that interview is that Ragnar was covering up his true perspective at times, like when he said that there were no other business models that would work for TSW other than P2P (which is very close-minded, seeing that he knows FC made more money on AoC after it went F2P that when it started, and other games with constant updates are F2P). But again, this is just an opinion backed up by a actually comment he made. :P

  • GargolaGargola Member Posts: 356

They are not adding 2 more malls, they are adidng ingame venues for modification, a barber shop and a "plastic surgery" clinic first and then a tatoo parlor later on.

All of them based on ingame currency, not real world money, as Ragnar stated.  And first use is free.

Okay. 2 more areas to spend money on cosmetics. none of the three are really "malls" according to definition, because malls are more than 1 store (but all 3 can easily implement real money or in game currency at the flick of a switch, so thats where i was going with that :P )

IDK, heavy competition is just around the corner. Sure none of the competion has the same setting as TSW, but that means only folks who are in it for the niche will stay. All who are just in it for the ride will probably leave since competition is f2p.

Don't forget... although the "heavy competition" and we all know what you're talking about is not a F2P game. It's a B2P game. You will still need to put out $50-60 to try it. And pay for xpac's every year, or two a year. If TSW can keep the free content coming without spamming xpacs, they will do quite well in my opinion.

To think that all he means is GW2 is absurd. Not mentioning all the AA F2P and B2P MMOs coming out in the next 6 months (Knight Age, Firefall are just two, Firefall looking pretty innovative, but you never know). There is Neverwinter F2P....The Elder Scrolls online P2P....Defiance P2P....FF XIV 2.0 P2P...Lineage Eternal F2P (a HUGE lurker, imo, could be really great if done with Lineage and 2 in mind)....PS2 F2P...

All of these are slated for 6-9 months until release. TSW has VERY heavy competition coming up in many different titles. and there are fantasy and non-fantasy in there. IMO, PS2, Firefall, and Defiance are a bigger competition to TSW than GW2 is.

I was talking more about GW2 and PS2. But I know people like to guess without knowing image

Why GW2?  You said F2P, it isn't, so why claim that it is?

Falling through the world is terribly common in this game for example and it's neither a cheap game to buy nor subscribe to.

There will be a free trial soon i'd imagine, most modern mmo's offer them a couple of months after release. Personally i'd wait till then as it'll give them a chance to fix a lot of the minor problems and we'll know more about their content promise by then as well.

Wait what?  I have never heard of anyone falling through the world.  Ever.  That would definately be something people would post about on the forums if it was occuring.

There already is a free trial.  All users have a buddy pass they can use to give a friend 24 hours of play time.

The thing about waiting though is that, based on Dev posts, you will miss out on content since the world will be constantly changing and evolving.

Falling thru the world?  in live?... really?   I guess you live in a different reality than the people actually playing the game.

Waiting to see how their content talk goes do is a valid reason for people wary of buying right now, but if "falling through the world" is something people are concerned about they doen't need to wait that gets fixed, cause i haven't even seen a post about that since early access.

It's not terribly common - have never seen that once nor heard of it in retail - I'm sure it happens - but it's rare - not common.

Lol...lot of complaints one could say about the game. Combat animations, bugged quests, chat channels screwed up, etc.

Amusingly though falling through the world isn't one of them because it isn't happening. Although far as quests go seems most of Solomon is fixed. Egypt on the other hand especially in the second zone has a bunch of bugged quests some which were unfortunately caused by 1.1.

Anyways, I would as I stated earlier also suggest those on the fence wait for a free trial. You know there will be one soon anyways.
