He's not entirely correct. GW2 was already over-hyped even before TOR, or any 2011-2012 MMO has come out. A more accurate explanation would be because people have been burned by existing MMOs and GW2's offerings coincidentally clicked to what they're looking for. Of course let us not take for granted blind followers. So far ANet delivered on what they've promised. I've only become aware of this game last year and right from reading up on what it has to offer I already saw myself enjoying this. I already saw how different it will be from other themeparks. Now that I'm playing it I never felt short-changed.
I hope you can make sense of that because so far, out of all who tried explaining it you only listened to this one who basically agrees with you and has the same stance against GW2.
It will definitely be interesting to see how this game is perceived a month or more after release. Maybe you guys are all right and I'm the fool not seeing it (I'd rather that was the case because that's win/win for all).
I don't have expectations that the game will gather 10million "subscribers". You just can't rely on the current crop of MMO gamers to stick around for very long.
Nice thing about GW2 though, you don't have to stick around. You can go do something else and when you get bored of it you can come back to GW2 withoug feeling guilty for leaving in the first place!
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
I hated Diablo 3 yet apparntly millions of other people loved it and hyped it up. Each to their own. GW2 obviously delivers what a lot of players want in a game. If you arent one of them then sorry, just wait for a game that does suit you.
So GW2 defence crew has arrived and still they havent provided with the answer i was looking for.
Except this post and even your initial post are just rude. I question as to whether or not you are interested in why people are excited as opposed to just gaining attention and making a troll post.
Also, you don't understand innovation. Innovation doesn't necessarily mean "giving you something that you've never seen before".
It means introducing something that is new to the status quo of whatever subject you are talking about. For instance, early cars had a crank where you cranked the engine to start. Eventually a starter and key was added. Simple and small developement, not really ground breaking at all but a new addition that added to the functionaltiy.
GW2 expands upon traditional questing and expands upon the "public quest". It also makes it so that groups comprised of different classes can be successful without having to rely upon "healer/tank/Damage dealers".
These things are small. Like the key. But this slightly altered quest/event system frees up players from going to and from ! givers and allows them to make a decision as to whether or not they want to participate. In addition, if one actually finishes the event there are additional events/information that can grow from that initial public quest.
The idea is to make each event/quest a more organic happening and integrate it into the world in a way that is more seamless. That makes sense with the world.
Additionally, the idea that players can don different weapons that unlock specifric skills to that weapon, regardless of class, allows many players a chance at expanding their character.
And that's pretty much it. Bits of innovation here and there that make the gameplay more palatable to some.
No reason to go insulting people by calling them fanboys just because you dont' get it.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Yeah I don't really get the hype either. Sometimes I think I've played a different game to the one people praise so much on this site.
I went to my old room mates place to go retry the BW, he had LOTR online on instead ............He got a refund and told me he just didn't like the feel.
I think it's the arcadey feel that puts me off. Oh well, I hope a lot of people enjoy it.
on the topic of some people not understanding the GW2 hype, if you don't truly understand what is wrong with most mmorpg's these days it's not a wonder you don't understand why so many people are hyped about the game.
it surprises me, that he didn't like the feel of GW2 but, he plays something that most concider a flop game
quirky combat mechanics, battle sound is terrible and slow, but hey to each his own I guess.
GW2 is waaaaaaay overhyped. Now don't get me wrong, I preordered and I have to prevent myself from overplaying BWE3 because I want to wait for release. I LOVE THIS GAME, but holy flying batman is it overhyped.
It's a great game, but I can see why people wouldn't like it (and please point to a game where everyone on this site will have the same consensus on). There is a lot of varied and interesting MMOs in the pipeworks, so I think everyone should calm their crotches and look forward to whatever. Since GW2 is attracting so many trolls, its sometimes difficult to tell between someone who doesn't like the game and a schmuck. I don't know where I was going with this.
Where is this game overhyped? Here on this website maybe, but honestly I have not seen anything else. Of course now that it has a release date there are adds all over the internet, but nothing else. I have seen no television advertisements, its not on the news, radio, and Letterman has said nary a word about its existense. If it was truly overhyped it would have been on The Big Bang Theory by now!
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

yea if I had not turned many of my friends onto the game they probably would of never heard about it.. month before swtor came out I saw billboards, tv commercials, every gaming site had full page advertisments it was everywhere.. so only place I see it talked up a lot is here and its all by people who have played the game.. so not sure how you can call that hype at all.
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
Yes I have played the Gw2 beta for several times now over the past months, and yes I find it a solid game, cred for devs but what I don't understand where all these hype coming from, mostly from GW2 fanboys.
Sure the game is not what you expect from a MMO there is no quest hub A+B+C ect, but the points is either if you klick a ! npc or run into a area you still get a quest to kill shit, its basicly the same thing, true its fun to run around and suddenly a event open up and players come to gether to fight off whatever it is, its still not something innovating its still the same thing that looking up a ! and do the quest.
I will not say much more than that but I will buy the game and see what's offer later when you can get to more max level.
becouse when npc tell you that a village is under attack its actualy under attacks, not like in any other games where you just go and kill mobs on the field
and there are other types of "quests" some are rly funny
I find it funny how some people say the game isn't industry changing when it's doing the single biggest change to the industry there is, dropping the holy trinity. Not to mention, it works, and very well. If removing the single biggest mechanic that's commonplace across nearly every MMORPG in existence isn't industry changing, literally nothing can be "industry changing" to you guys... Not to mention the fact that SKILL is now the primary focus of the game, instead of gear. Please, I dare anyone, to actually point out a game where SKILL is truly more important than gear (an mmorpg..).
^This should have been anew topic This has disrail stamped on it!
I suppose I could have started another topic but a lot of people, a lot, have said it's "Not the second coming, Not a game changer, etc" in this topic, a lot.

People with their overexaggarated excitement and comments about the game made people in the dark think it was something to behold. Its a good solid game which will be successful, but its not anything fans led me to expect..
This topic and the responses it generates should explain to you about the hype surrounding GW2. People are talking about it. You, the op, came into the GW2 forum and started talking about it. In a couple hours this has generated 10 pages worth of people talking about it. Hype on this forum isn't solely based on people loving or hating the game that is GW2. In this case, I am inclined to believe that it is simply about the amount of activity that surrounds this game. People who hate the game are trying it. People who love the game are getting others to try it. WOW brought MMO's mainstream (In my opinion). For all that it is and love it or hate it, people know WOW. Guild Wars 2 is becoming known to people. Love it or Hate it, people are talking about it. That is what is generating the hype about it. It might die down after some people try it and don't like it. But only time will tell. For me, Its the MMO i will be playing.

Yes of course, the OP had absolutly nothing to do with it.
Yes I have played the Gw2 beta for several times now over the past months, and yes I find it a solid game, cred for devs but what I don't understand where all these hype coming from, mostly from GW2 fanboys.

I will not say much more than that but I will buy the game and see what's offer later when you can get to more max level.
I think a lot of the hype is due to the fact that the game is the first game that releasing in a solid state for many years. Rift and Tera was not in bad states or anything but neither of them had close to the polish GW2 have.
That GW2 also mixes oldtime exploration with some new ideas doesn´t hurt, and that it is the first MMO in a while releasing without a raidbased endgame. Not to mention 3 factions PvP.
It is not really that some things are exceptional but the game is good and solid all around while all other games releasing after Wow have had many downsides.
I have so far enjoyed it more than any other MMO the last 10 years, partly because I missed exploration games but also because it doesn´t have any annoying bad points. Of course bad things might appear later but so far so good.
Meh, I don't see it either. The only thing it really does different is getting rid of the trinity. However, as expected, it just turned the game into a massive zerg fest :
It feels entirely too arcade for my taste, but oh well I'll keep forcing myself to play it this weekend to hopefully get to some of the more interesting content.

I think someone forgot The Secret World when it comes to polished newly released games.
Also, Tera wasn't a new release when we got it, so that shouldn't really be included in that list, considering it had been out for 2 years beforehand?
Rift is an exception, from an unknown company comes the most polished MMO ever at release (Including GW2 in the state it is in beta.)
But no, the hype does not come from polish, it never has. It comes from the things GW2 promises to have, which are somewhat different to what we've been getting in other MMO's.
Hundreds of thousands, or millions, of people bought Age of Conan, Anarchy Online, World of Warcraft (Vanilla,) Warhammer and The Old Republic, none of which where at a high standard for polish.
My point is, GW2 might be a very polished MMO, but that's not where the hype comes from.

I however disagree with RIFT, in my opinion it was a lot less polished at the release day than GW2. Trion did however put an amazing work into fixing it up fast but that is another story.
As for Wow it actually weren´t that hyped at launch, it took 6 months after launch before that happened but by late 2004 standards it was really polished.
Polish is not what gets a game hyped but it is really important to keep the hype surviving the first few days in beta.
As for AoC, Tortage was actually pretty polished up and that was all we were allowed to see before launch.
TORs hype was really more due to the fact that Bioware have many fans and that EA put millions into commercials before launch.
WAR is a bit of a mystery, even if the lack of polish really wasn't it´s problem. It´s problem was the fact that Mythic cut out half the game 6 weeks before launch including the entire endgame and patched in some crap about keeps. It actually kept the hype goint until people hit T4 and noticed that.
But as I said, polish is not the only reason but it helps a lot. Not all polished games will be great but all great games must be relatively polished. If you for an example say different about Wow then you didn't play EQ2 at launch a month earlier.
