General: EA Rumored for Sale

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

According to a news article at the New York Post, gaming giant Electronic Arts is quietly exploring sale options. With the rumors flying today, EA's stock has risen about 10%. EA is reportedly in early talks with KKR and Providence Equity Partners.

Providence is the owner of Bethesda.

Like its rivals, 30-year-old EA has been challenged by the changes roiling the traditional gaming business. Sales of hardware consoles and software have slumped along with the rise in popularity of mobile and casual games that users can play for free online. Consumers are also buying fewer $60 games.

I wouldn't mind EA getting dominated/devoured by another company, but I'm not sure if this is a reliable source. The New York Post is rather famous for it's sensationalism. And unsurprisingly, the Post doesn't bother telling us how it acquired this information.

Oh boy... The knives are going to be so very sharp in the SWTOR forums and related blogs on site.

If you guys think the suits at EA are bad now then just wait until they get bought by a pure investment group.

It will remove what little humanity that may still remain.

I disagree, I don't think it can much worse for them. I don't mean content either, I just mean I will not be buying any EA products.

We are in a low point for the video game industry right now. Soon, when the new consoles arrive I expect things to turn around.

A journalist never reveal his/her sources. But if reported without some facts that would look bad for the journalist.

    @ snapfusion

Well said, depending on who buys them it could get much worse.. the group that owns Bethesda seems less hostile, but if they take over Ea I know they'll cut some development house along with games.

Not nescessarily. Take a look at how Vivendi is trying to sell off Activision-Blizzard. Investors are worried about the gaming market in general it seems. Not to mention that dotcom companies like groupon and facebook are not looking good since they went public. The latter being a platform for what many were thinking to believe to be the next biggest thing on online gaming. And as in "many" I'm referring to investors.

Either way its the bad economy that is fueling most of these speculations and companies trying to brace/adapt to a ever changing gaming horizon.

Private equity firms are bad sign for 99% of companies. It means they don't have the money to continue.

This can not possibly be good for Swtor. On the other hand this is great for Funcom fans! It doesn't look like EA will be buying them or anything anytime soon. FC gets to stay the independent developer fighting against the man!

it is no wonder that people are buying less 60$ games with the quantity that EA are so very famous for. gamers today have become cautious, not cheep.  [mod edit]

The bad thing in this is that it shows how bad of a shape the market is in, and that leads to less investors and that in turn leads to more companies like Zynga and Popcap dominating the market.

This have been a good conversation

This would be okay I suppose if good company took them over. I would just feel bad about people losing their jobs in the process.
