They made the world very detailed even when you look far into the distance.
Also all the textures I've seen ingame are very very sharp (at max settings).
You can see and feel the love they've been giving to their game. The result is beautiful.
See it for yourself here in the short (2 min) video I made in the starting area of the humans (Queensdale):
-And some dare to say that swtor/warhammer got better graphics, yeah sure

Really?
Ive been hearing the engine is a resource hog for a game without top notch graphics...
Also comparing a games graphics to warhammer...which is old and Swtor (did they ever allow the use of high graphics settings?) isnt saying much.
For that amount of detail shown in the game, resources eaten is very well spent. It is indeed superb engine.
Thing is you CANNOT decrease your view distance + their engine is defintaly not optimized for handling of big amount of players.
Graphics are really nice, but they are artistically nice. Technically they are in a range between poor and medicore.
This game isn't even in the top 5 MMOs graphically.
1. Final Fantasy XIV
2. TERA
3. The Secret World
4. Age of Conan
5. Entropia Universe
6. Guild Wars 2... maybe...
You're right though, WAR had lousy graphics when it was released umpteen years ago, and SWTOR... well, let's not even talk about that.

If WoW was released today even in its' entirety it would be f2p in 3 months.
Why is it still such a big deal?
Disagree, it is definetly optimized for handling of big amount of players. 60+ players on screen and no problems.
There is not much what they can do to make ir more optimized, imho (from my experience writing engines).
Fair enough but I don't think a single one of those compares to it artistically or level of detail. You're talking about straight pixel graphics, there's much more to it then that that can make a game pretty.

Personally Guild Wars 2 trounces those 5 in terms of aesthetics IMO. The level of detail in the artwork is just outstanding. The game may not be the most technically impressive in terms of graphics, but aesthetically it is just beautiful. I think they have the best looking character models too (again IMO. FFXIV is also up there in terms of character models.
As for the engine, I'm definitely impressed with the sheer number of people and objects on screen with minimal slow down. WvW runs silky smooth, and events with 50+ people run silky smooth as well for the most part. Overall very impressive and shiny
60 players on screen isnt much in todays terms.
I know that in TSW their pvp handles 150vs150vs150 and given you need a pertty serious gaming rig to handle all that in decent detail...just watching my roomate play that game its impressive to say the least considering hes not laggin...though hes on a new computer with a gtx 670.
Ive seen some pretty crappy games try the mass pvp...hell even swtor tried and failed to handle ilum graphically on even high end and top of the line machines.
Stating GW2 can handle 60 players on screen and comparing its graphics to war and swtor then high fiving eachother over its awesomenss is hilarious however.
Scoobin it up on the daily.
Well, art style is always going to be subjective. I run into people all the time who still think WoW is as good as it gets graphically, simply because they enjoy the cartoon style.
Taking everything into account, you could bump up GW2 a couple of spots, but it's still going to be behind FFXIV and TERA for sure. FFXIV because of the ultra-hi-res detail. Case in point, I can't max FFXIV, even with SLI'd GTX 670s, without overclocking both of them and letting them run in the 80c range (which I don't like to do).
TERA's animations absolutely blow GW2 (and any other MMO really) out of the water. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a TERA fan anymore. I played it for about 3 months and got bored pretty quickly with the lack of content, but the game is breathtaking. FFXIV is unfinished, STILL, but I really am rather tired of seeing GW2 overhyped, even in areas in which it's clearly below other games.

I dont think you understand game engines.
WAR used gamebryo which is an older game system that was used in DAOC. It does handle lots of players on screen well but graphically it doesnt cater to all the bells and whistles. Odd side story..anyone else remember all those threads on how awesome WAR's graphics were when the game was still considerd the best game ever?
WOW uses and in house game engine, its a 24 bit game engine which explains why some of the character modles look the way they do. They have done an amazing job with textures making the ground look "modern" from what ive seen. The low-bit engine handles large crowds and low end machines with ease.
If im not mistaken AN is using their own GW type engine.
The funny thing is that if WAR is like wow with excessive detail...GW2 is like WAR with excessive detail. They are very similair.
GW2 runs on DX9 only right? Or are they catching up with their engine and expecting a delayed dx11 client?
From an artistic point of view, yes they did an excellent job. From a technical point a view, the graphics are mediocre at best. I still don't think the environment graphics are as good as the now 5 years old LOTRO, although the character graphics/animations are definitely better.
If anyone deserves props for optimizing an engine it's Funcom. They came a very long way from AoC (beatiful graphics but a performance hog) to now with TSW. It's a shame their engine will probably go to waste once they go bankrupt. So much potential.
You throw your personal opinions around like they are fact. In my opinion GW2 is one of the best looking games on the market. I'm running it with all settings maxed on my SLI 670's and it looks gorgeous. I can't stand the look of Tera. FFXIV is irrelavent until it releases. TSW is also beautiful.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
for how it looks including style the performance is just amazing if you ask me. 3 sided wvwvw battles (40-50 each side on screen) with all details on max including shadows on my i7 with a gtx 460 (msi talon) i have the game running smooth without having to adjust anything. thats how it should be done.
just look at TSW ... it may have a better engine technical wise but i for one found that game to lack the touch to make it look good. a sterile looking world & silly looking characters with a performance as crappy as AOC (ok ok not that bad, but still not good) if you are not running a super rig, which is fail for an mmo to start with :P noone cares if those 2% with a nasa comp can play without laag. in GW 2 all of our guild have been able to play wvwvw battles without any laag-> win
You have to be joking. *facepalm*
from a guy who obviously has not even played the game...The original poster I mean not the guy who replied.
WTF?
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
Ill dumb it down a notch.
Nice artwork...like interesting design of mobs and landscape ect.
Poor graphics on a technical side...dx9 which is pretty much LOL for a new game.
