Very interesting but I'm afraid it won't stick. D3 only had a temporary affect on WOW and so some of the same will occur here. also, MoP will probably bring it back well above the 50k.
Not surprised, it happens with every game, but evens out one way or the other. Games become boring, old and some times people want something new to play. It's called gaming.
Nothing will last forever, eventually at some point, mmorpg's will die off and another will take its place or people will quit playing due to boredom or they are burnt out altogether.
I could care less if World of Warcraft is dying or not. I'm not playing it anymore so it doesn't affect me.
Does it matter? It's the end of the expantion, 1 month till the new one comes out, and a new, hotly anticipated game/compeditor for time, just released. Of course its gonna tank. Once MoP comes out, it will shoot back up again, only to gradually fall off over the coming year, until the next exp comes out. It's not telling of either GW2 or WoW
We've only seen this, what, 3 times before? Granted, from now on, I think they will have fewer and fewer coming back, and more people quitting for good.
side note, Havent played WoW for a long time now, and dont plan to start up again.

That's the ting... They've alienated most of the original playerbase by now, and are desparately seeking to attract new (younger demographics). I don't know ANYONE from my classic/tbc times that still play.
Must be the 15th time this info has been posted, proves nothing.
a. it's WoW patch week 19GB patch (servers off line for 12 hours on Tuesday for US and 12 hours on Wednesday for EU)
b. 3 Weeks till MOP is released so lots aint going to bother raiding and taking this time for a break
c. People are checking out GW2 or other games
guild wars 2 is a 17GB download and the gameworld is greater, denser, and still relevant at 80
better graphics too... 90 hours of voice overs...
I wonder what Blizz put in its game files that made them swell up so much...
a fat panda that's gonna trash your room if you stop playing wow?
Tenthousand copy pasted gearitems for the years of mindless grind. On top of that even if they are ugly WoW item skins still take up much space on your harddrive Same goes for recycling models with reskinning of monster and objects.
Also think of the thousands of copy pasted quests asking you to gind small boars, big boars, etherboars, frostboars, drowning boars or pandaboars. Every dumb excuse to grind the boars waiting for their deaths five yards further away takes up space on your harddrive.
Quantitiy = quality. Well we knew that already from WoW...
GW2 is just the same repeat, kill, collect, escort or deliever to think otherwise is silly. Just nice you dont have to first find an NPC to kick it off so lets be serious GW2 is a fine game but it does nothing new just does it a little different.

Yeah because GW2 doesn't copy paste same skins; models, DE's right? what a lod of bull. Some people try too hard to bash WOW around here. Fact is that every MMO copy pastes its content.
It seems WoW was nearly unaffected by GW2 release (if you compare last Monday's numbers to that of previous week's Monday), but its own patch caused a huge drop.

the game started on tuesday
monday and before was inly preorder and pre-purchase start.
GW2 doesnt have a sub fee. People don't have to choose so people will play GW2 and any other game they want. The playing field is becoming more leveled. Beside Blizzard know that people will pay out of habit if not fun. So I'll take a wait and see attitude and keep playing the games I enjoy.
This is Xire we are talking about ppl a joke. It only works if you have xfire so it is not a "official" chart so who cares. I mean realy lets get off this WoW is going down hill kicks.
Ive acualy notice a LOT of people comming back to WoW after 5.0 I personaly can care less what Xfire says they do not regulate my game.

how can anyone say that?
it is mindboggling.
"it only works if you have xfire so it's not an official chart"??????
do you honestly realize what you are saying?
you're utterly missing the point and you do not even understand, in any way, shape or form, what xfire does or what these numbers mean...
have you read the thread? no I guess.
it is simply baffling how people do not grasp simple statistics

Statistics are frequently wrong, misquoted, misused, overinflated, underinflated, barbaqued, mowed over, etc.
Statistics have also been used and misused in the last few decades to make some pretty aweful decisions about a wide variety of things.
X-Fire is a voluntary program that a Player has to opt in for and download and install. Not everyone does, and I believe most don't. Quoting X-Fire is like a U.S. Presidential Politician promising purple rainbows in an election year.
No. I will not use X-Fires statistics to tell me much of anything other than an extremely vague shot in the dark about what is going on. (a silly wild ass guess is better and usually more accurate). I understand why others don't take much stock in X-Fire's data as well.
Regardless the reliability of x-fire, with so many good MMOs being released it's no surprise that there would be a decline in numbers playing WoW. Particularly the during the weekend that GW3 comes out. However, when MOP comes out I expect the subs to increase again. These Subs may not reach the dizzy hights of previous years, but will still be in the millions... numbers that other MMOs can only dream about.
GW3 is not the WoW killer, nor is Neverwinter or any other game on the horizon. WoW will die from a thousand papercuts some of which will be and has been self inflicted. The over simplification of the game, the dungeon finder and many other features have made the game really accessible. However these features have made the game less interesting, far less social and less rewarding and the world itself has lost a bit of ambience, credability and authenticity.
Don't get me wrong, WoW is still a monumental and great technical achievement and the fact that it is still so popular even after all those years should be enough to reserve it place in the history of gaming as one of the greatest and most popular games ever made.
Dude i don't even know one person from my guilds who is using XFire lol. But if you want to see situation log in and see how servers are full. One guy said right thing about wow---It is like old good wife, after you try something new you always return back home . My grandpa used to say---- I tried to live in Mordor, Plane of Knowledge, Tatooine, Tyria, Telara but my heart brings me always back to Azeroth, there is no soul there my boy, no soul and no beautiful blood elvish girls

TORs isn't nearly as drastic. I don't care enough about the other two to check.
Keep in mind that Xfire hasn't worked with WoW with out some tweaks for a bit now. For me it hasn't worked since the 64-bit client came out.
With the most recent patch they have also changed the name of the launcher, and when I went on last night Xfire wasn't detecting it.
Of course plenty of people are playing GW2 right now myself included, but WoW isn't going anywhere just yet.....
Its definately not going anywere especially with a new expansion coming out. And the timing is actually perfect.
So? MOP wil still be the best selling mmorpg of the year with millions of copies. WOW will remain the "King" (whatever that is) and so on.
Btw, no, i'm not even a WOW fan. This xfire thing needs to seriously die. I think it started with TOR. Yeah, it meant alot.

The 3-day drop you see is caused by:
1: Weekend ending (drop one)
2: Tuesday patch on America (drop 2)
3: Wednesday patch on EU (drop 3)

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
