I dont think ArenaNet every claimed to be the savior of MMOs.... So if you like it then Play it ... If you dont then move on to something you do enjoy... DONE AND DONE
Hype and all that, people will get to the max level, and come down to earth pretty fast..
Could go back a bit ago and replace GW2 with Secret World, much less months and replace GW2 with Diablo 3..
I agree.
This is about as close to total accuracy as one is going to find amongst these comments to this well written article. I can't tell you have many new releases i've followed via MMORPG.com and seen the hype just go cRaZy, then mere weeks or months later when all the people super pumped about the game slam into the level cap wall and grow bored and declare the game was to be the end all of mmo's had somehow failed them. Need i remind anyone of SWTOR? But GW2 will survive, it can only be more successful than its predecessor. which was in itself a niche game. You are going to have people say GW2 is not good and you will have people say it is good and you will have people say you shouldn't be allowed to say it is not good and you will have people say you should speak louder to talk over the people who say it is not good cause you can't let it go and accept criticism of your "baby" and you will have the majority of players never visit a forum to complain about or praise the game.
From what i've seen and played of the game, all i can safely say is that it has not convinced me to spend money on it yet. WILL IT?!?! time will tell. or will enough time pass that i sort of forget about it and wait for the next big thing? perhaps.
It's overhyped for sure. It really doesn't do much different than other MMORPGs. There are a few improvements to the genre, which are most welcome. However, the overall quality isn't what you'd expect. The floaty animations, the mouse smoothing, the terrible voices, and the shoddy performance all marr what could have been what people hoped for and expected.
Unfortunately for a game like this, those problems will never be fixed.
Despite that though, the game is pretty good and worth playing, especially since there is no monthly fee to worry about.
GW2 seems like a fine game. "Savior" as people refer it wont come any time soon. WoW was a savior since it took a huge step forward and up to now other MMOs were only making smaller steps back/forward. To get next so called "savior" we need a new MMO that will take another huge step forward. What that step might be i dont know and if someone knew they would already made it.
With regards to popularity I think the author may look back on this article and feel a little like those bloggers who wrote "facebook will never catch on".
GW2 is a very healthy thing for the MMO-genre, with Arena-net we have a game clearly created by investing in a team's vision, with many genre changing features. GW2 is a huge departure from the typical accountants looking to make a buck with a clone with a new title e.g. sw:tor
1st Age of MMO's (everquest era) was for the highly computer literate enthusiast niche. Co-operative effort and massive time investment was essential to get anywhere.
2nd Age of MMO's (WoW-age) Solo-play came to the fore at the expense of social and community group interaction and effort. LFD/LFR etc. Competition for game resources, loot, harvesting, mobs, quest updates made players view each other as competition. Massive time investment was still required because of the subs model, but now it was hidden behind bite-sized short term tasks, and re-grinding ones gear, factions and currencies back to par again as your efforts to date are replaced and superceeded every new season.
3rd Age of MMO's (GW2 era) players now have the best of both group centric first age and solo enabled 2nd age. £rd brings far better community bonds and rasons to co-operate. Time investment is now optional, revenue no longer based on making the game boring and longwinded for large chunks before you are allowed to access the fun. Metric is, if it's fun, people will play, and buy vanity, convenience items hence generating revenue.
I've helped and thanked, and been helped by and thanked by more random strangers in the past week of GW2 than in the last 4 years across several MMO's including established and new launches. 3rd age of MMO's is where they become properly social by removing the divisive elements and GW2 will shape what MMO developers have to live up to from now on.
Hype and all that, people will get to the max level, and come down to earth pretty fast..

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
Great blog. It's nice to see a writer on this site that doesn't instantly sing the praises of every MMO that they cover the second it's released. The other writers seem to be taking notes from That Guy With the Glasses Bum Reviews, where they flail their hands wildlly and say: "OMG, this is the greatest game I've ever played in my life!" ... for every single game they cover.
Problem, many naysayers and cautionist can not understand is that GW2 can not fail.
I bought the game - NC Soft is now obliged to keep server live so i can play it.
As far as I am concerned - if i am only player playing GW2 in the world. And if I enjoy the game. Than the game didnt fail.
And what some dude on internet says or thinks is completely irellevant to me.
That is the magic of B2P
This just made me go...huh? Do you honestly believe that they are obligated to keep the servers running tomorrow if they don't want to? I've seen many of your posts, and agreed with many, which makes me wonder what the heck happened with this one? It doesn't even make sense. Maybe I've had one to many beers...or one not enough.
By far Guildwars 2 exceeded my expectations. It may not be that perfect, like what other people want it to be but to tell you the truth there's no such thing as a perfect MMO. B2P is still the best business model out there, you are not obligated to pay 15$ a month. Overall, I think GW2 is the most prominent MMORPG today.
I think this game, can be used for early payment, but as time goes on, it must be to open up his game platform, let more people enjoy the game gives you pleasure.without doubt,Gw2 is a good game, although it exist many prombles,I still want to enjoying it!
In some general view I don't see any savior in Guild Wars 2 at all. I have never played WoW that much to judge, but I think it must be very similar to GW2. But that's not the reason why I like GW2. I started my MMO "career" 7 years ago in Guild Wars. The game raised me, taught me what PvP, PvE, goods and bads about the players from my country. GW1 and GW2 aren't the best games ever and it would be a lame opinion to say otherwise.
But I spent my childhood there and now back in Guild Wars 2 lore and world it's like go home after many years. Discovering old Ascalon is same as looking at old family photos. Threre is an emotional bond between me and Guild Wars. And I don't know how ANet did this, but they did it pretty good. None of this would happened if there wasn't any Guild Wars 1.
Your jorney begins now, Padawan. Let the force guide your hand.
Ignoring the points on GW2 (because it's simply the most recent visible case of the underlying problem, and that I don't want to debate GW2), I pretty much agree with the author.
But as I've just said, it's not limited to GW2, it's only the most recent case. It's insane how quickly people can go from "Overhyped about X Game", "Seriously disappointed by X game" to "Overhyped about Y Game" in a matter of days. It's frustrating to see because there's just no way to have any general discussions without either a "fanboi" or a "hater" jumping in and mentioning the game that's been on the front page all month with either overly positive or negative criticism.
Very visible on this forum is how making an absolutely legit opinion of a game in a negative fashion (i.e "Sadly, I didn't like the game") is akin to throwing yourself in a lake full of piranhas as people who seemingly cannot accept that someone may disagree with them, lashes out in a vicious and epic display of e-peen measuring.
The worst part is, it will probably never change. No matter how much we try to encourage people to be more civil and accept others opinions, it's like talking to a wall. Forget free speech and all that, you'll be deemed a heretic (troll, hater) and thrown into the lion's den should you dare voice an opinion that differs from the consensus within a said community. The story of Galileo comes to mind in that regard (and funny enough, turns out he was right!).
Guild Wars 2 is not the savior of MMO gaming. In fact, it shouldn't even be remotely close to being seen as the savior of anything at this present time. The game will be officially launched as of this article’s publish, and while people are excited for it, they aren't considering the impact they have on the game's future
How about you guys @MMORPG.com read the review of past game like TOR (for example) and re-think about your article.
Then mark this page and bring it up when TOR goes F2P.
Pretty sure at this time TOR won't be close to all the features GW2 had at launch and I dare saying it it will be less polished too.
Anyway guess the article was writted to have people display more ads

Nice, level-headed critique with good points.
Guild wars 2 is the savior of MMOs, it saved me from all the other fail disaster mmos out there.
