First off let me say that on almost every level I am loving this game. Haven't been able to put it down! It has been a long time since a game has grabbed ahold of me like GW2 has. I was in some betas and pre-purchased but as soon as I knew I liked it, I stopped playing beta. I did not want to spoil my experience for launch. Since headstart began last Saturday I have been loving it.
One of the selling points of GW2 for me was the "play how you want to play" approach. One can level up and progress as they see fit. There are multiple options available to you. My particular play style through most of the games that I have become immersed in is to level up my character and craft all my own equipment. I do not like to out level my character past my crafting skills. There is just something about making all your own equipment that I really enjoy. I am not here to argue the general viability of this play style although I think there are many like minded people out there who would agree with me.
Therein lies the issue. Due to Arenanet being unprepared for the launch and being unable to get the market working I am unable to play the way I enjoy playing. I am at a complete stand still. I need to have access to the open market to keep my crafting on pace with my character level. If I go out and kill tons of mobs to farm every single material I need I will quickly out level my crafting's usefulness. Not once have I been able to access the market in the last 6 days. I am told that 25% of players were randomly selected to be able to use it recently but unfortunately I was not one of the lottery winners.
I have 2 characters in the mid level 20s and am unable to go any further or I will have to play in a way that doesn't suit me. I love the game but I have a hard time giving them a free pass for not having a basic feature working for launch. They laureled openly about how well they felt the game was going to do at launch but were unprepared for the very success they predicted. I am going to hold them to the same standard as I would hold any other mmo. This 25% thing is ridiculous as well. I get to hear others talk about enjoying the parts of the game that are unavailable to me because of some random selection?
I know I am going to upset some people with this post but please understand that my play experience is every bit as important as yours. My enjoyment is being impacted by a shortcoming of Arenanet and my opinion is every bit as valid as yours. Thanks!

Im a little disapointed myself. I norm don't craft but I was looking fwd to it. I'm still in the sylvari starting area and can't get my tailoring crafting up at all without things to salvage.
And no I should not have to go to the human area to fight huminoids to get packs to salvage at very low drop rates for Jute ( cloth ).....Human area is for when I roll a human !!!
other than this I love the game
i feel your pain.
im in a similar boat myself, needing market to get mats to progress, because leather drops are just ... not plentiful for me.
hope they get the tading post up and running soon. they have already said they are opening it up to various players to validate the stability. and the plan to open it fully soon.
about anet...
no one can be prepared 100% for a launch, no one can ever test what it will really be like having about a million people pushing the "play" button at the same time. if you want an example of "failure to launch" i have two words... Mortal Online.. worst weekend ever.....
Plus... be careful of mixing up ANet hype with fanboi hype. Anet has aleays been prety good about saying only what they feel they can deliver.
anyway...
i know you have your preffered paystyle, but maybe you can do what i do.
i just started running around the capital cities of the 5 races, and lions arch. have to admit i got a little addicted to it.
that is, take a break from what you want to do, and see what there is to do. there are thigns to find all over the place. and things to do.
i know its not the most helpful answer, but in my humble op, it helps
I do tend to have to wait a few levels to use much of what I craft. That doesn't bother me at all. If anything it gives me something to look forward to! Just bothers me if I fall behind on my crafting skills, etc. It's a non factor to some but to me it's a big factor.
I also fell for the Mortal Online debacle. That game was stillborn! I have been trying to keep myself busy with odds and ends. I have 100% completion on at least 5 maps. The issue for me is that I am having to "find" things to do because of this roadblock in front of me. The last thing I want to do is be struggling for things to do in-game to occupy myself. That usually is the beginning of the end of the love affair.
Why not buy from other players without the trading post? I´m sure if you use the /map you can grab afew peoples attention so you can buy crafting materials. The trading post is just a convenience really.
Another option, if you got the cash, is to buy armor and weapons from vendors ingame and salvage them for materials. Not cheap mind you.
I have tried that and often times just wastes a ton of time and has mixed results. "The trading post is just a convenience really" ???? Really???? In my opinion the trading post is a bit more than a convenience. I would go so far as to call it a core feature and necessary to the economy.
OP, i had exactly the same situation as you.
What i did is forsake the idea of keeping crafting in sync with my level and just going on. Yes its a loss, but on the other hand, you can then buy a boost and level your crafting in one go (very useful).
I was in the 25% and only got to use AH for like an hour or two, then it went to "under maintenance" again...
I miss DAoC
Sorry but got to say it. It´s just a necessity if you´re abit lazy. The economy can easily thrive with communication between players and, atleast in my opinion, creates a more alive felling in the game world.
So yes I don´t see it as a core feature in any regard.
i hope they get the trading post up and running. it is the lifeblood of MMO economy. I am pretty sure that they are busting a nut to get the trading post up and running.
too bad it went down at launch tho,
you only get one cahce to make a first impression.
and yeah, when you start running out of thigns to do, or doing thing you just dont like,,, its a pretty good sign that the honeymoon is over for you.
Thats an opinion though.
I myself prefer a trade channel without an auction house.
I feel your pain on the Trading Post issues. They seem to be getting close to a fix, though. It was up for maybe an hour late last night with no issues, which has to be a good sign.
I think even in the best of times keeping crafting on par with character level will probably be difficult, unless you can find a guild willing to support you as a crafter. I think it's good for the game that it is this way, even if personally I like to be able to craft my own gear while leveling. If crafting is too easy to keep up, then there really isn't a need for crafting focused players in the game economy, as everyone would just craft their own stuff.
BTW, level scaling does work wonderfully in this game. If you really want to craft your own gear, you can just stick to areas that drop the mats you need for your level tier and just ignore your character level entirely. Only push through to higher level areas when you are ready for the drops for the next tier. Or, level a couple alts as well and only move them up the ladder of content as needed for the mats. You'd be much better of finding a good guild which will support and appreciate your crafting focus, but if you really want to earn your crafting progression every step of the way on your own, there are ways to do so.
To this point, crafting most definitely is not a money maker, but it may be if you can push through to crafting levels that most people don't have the patience or guild support to reach. Even if the TP had been open, it's likely you would have run into funding issues trying to go it alone. It's hard work to advance crafting in this game!
Just remember that the game does not push you to always play content on par with your true character level. You'll progress through the game zones more slowly if you try to stick to the plan on crafting most or all of your gear, so you'd have to weigh the personal sense of accomplishment vs. the negatives before deciding if that's something you want to do.
Besides, in most MMOs where crafting progression isn't a complete joke, it's always been better to level a character to the level cap with out trying to craft your gear along the way, then using the mats and money accumulated to give an alt the foundation needed to do what it is you hope to do. It's up to you to decide how to balance your play time.

Experiment more, grind crafting less - level up crafting SO fast never have had to grind crafting mats once.
Trick #1 - as long as the part that requires a drop from a mob is still Yellow/Green etc. even if the other components are greyed out, if you craft a new item (discovery) you will still gain massive experience.
Trick #2 - very hard to level up two similar crafting disciplines side by side - like Weaponsmith/Armorsmith.
I leveled my armorsmith up to Iron ore level on one toon, make stuff for both Warrior and Guardian.
Guardian leveling up Weaponsmith with leftover mats and what I gain out in the world on that toon.
Trick #3 - Blue items that are souldbound that are crafted or looted (but not from personal story rewards) are soulbound to your ACCOUNT and not the character.
The tooltip will say "soulbound to another character" if you can't transfer it between your toons, but if not you can use the same stuff on your toons just not sell for other players to use.
So when I move past weapons/armor on my Warrior (higher level) if it was crafted/drop at Blue quality I pass it down to my Guardian.
Lots of tricks like this to be very efficient with crafting and crafting XP - I've never been higher level on my toon than my crafting, always playing catch up to my crafting.
I can completely agree with a trade channel, more sandbox approach. Perhaps with a few integrated tools to help facilitate the trading. Are these things in GW2? If so I must have missed them because all I can seem to do is spam my general zone chat and hope I find someone willing to sell.
You resort to calling me lazy in order to defend a feature that isn't working. Do you realize that the trading post is critical to the ingame economy? Sure the game is fun and everyone is on a honeymoon right now, myself included. But if they don't get this cleared up fast, the result on the economy for atleast a while is going to be pretty catastrophic. I'm not saying that you have to concern yourself with these things. They concern me and I'm sure they concern the economist that Arenanet hired to manage the game's economy.
I agree with him as well. But his statement is irrelevant. There is no trade channel.
Really good post. For all of the folks raging about how the game sucks this and that with no substance your post actually has good reasons. This doesn't affect me because Im not a big crafter/market player but it is a bit ridiculous that the auction house has been down for so long.
They really need to get it open soon. I would be also enranged(as I was with D3) if spvp wasn't in there for example. Its one of my main activities, so I understand your frustration and thanks for keeping it civil.
Press "W" key to move forward. Or the up arrow key should work too, but I only use WASD to move. Also, be sure to use the mouse to look around...being a key board turner has major disadvantages in a fast paced/action game.
If "W" or up arrow doesn't work, be sure to look in the controls and see if it got changed for some reason. Then turn it back to "W" or a key you are used to.

Guess i havn't missed the auction house much. The Great Forge rocks and i tend to get more money breaking down things into collectable materials and just storing it in the bank.
I can' see where crafting people would have an issue as they can't sell their wears. But thats why i like GW2. There are places in the world that just have tons of st;uff that pop up very very very frequently. Try the sea bed for metals, some places just respawn 5 to 8 mine things all the time.
Here's an idea.... stop playing GW2 until they get the trade house up and running. You're not paying a sub fee, so nothing reallly lost by waiting for a bit.

Okay first of all...going forward if anyone sees this in a game ad, on a website, or on a box (do they still have those?)....
