I'm going to have to throw myself in the lot with many others.  Funcom has some of, if not they best AAA MMORPG ideas, but they fall completely flat on execution.  AO is my favorite MMO to date by far, would easily pay quite a bit of money if they would either update it or just release an AO2, although the thought of them ruining the same game twice is somewhat scary.

My hope is that they will invest their time more in mordernizing Anarchy Online. The game was amazing. It just needs more refinement and upgrades to drag it into this decade. If they can pull that off they would see it become one of the most popular MMO's out there.

AoC got an unfair panning after it came out, but they did leave gaps in the questing to top level idea. Some grind was needed in mid level. Loads of posters on here were predicting TSW would be the same, don't hear them harping on so much about that now!

Old AO player myself, I never liked it as much as say DAOC but it is up there with AC in my eyes.

It got exactly what it deserved after 2 years of false advertising and outright lies from Funcom about what would be in the game. Not to mention Tortage was one of the most inane, boring, simple, derivitive, length tutorials I've ever had to force myself through. And people called that "the good part". Follow the glowing arrows to the sparkling quest objectives through a linear forest!

I quit AoC shortly after release. The game was a dissapointment after Tortage. But i came back about a year ago and the game is acutally very good.

And what of those of us who thought Tortage was laughably bad? If the best part of your game is a linear hand holding tutorial with the shallowest quests in the industry...

Yeah, I am still trying to figure out why if they make such great games,  all their games have empty servers.   AOC went F2P and still is merging servers down to just a few.  TSW sold less than half of what Funcom was expecting and resulted in them laying off over half their staff.

Here is the fact.  All of Funcom´s games have had 1 or 2 really excellent parts.  AO had the most interesting world.  AOC had great high-end graphics and music.   Melee combat was also interesting to some people.   TSW had a great theme and environment.

But at the same time, each of their games had many MANY very VERY subpar parts to it that make it unplayable for most people.   You cannot cherry-pick the few good features of each game and ignore all the terrible parts to it and say it was a great game.

TSW is the perfect example of this.. the theme, environments are top-notch and unique.  However, character models and movements are from the 1990s.  Questing is also subpar, and more like WOW from 2005.

    The numbers speak for themselves.

The most annoying of Funcom's failures is that, IMO, AO is still their best MMO. It has a huge, open world and a great mix of sandbox and themepark features - something both TSW and AoC lack. Too bad it's so 2001 it makes your eyes hurt, had some disappointing expansions, is quite dead and still doesn't have that new graphics engine they have talked about for years.

IMO AO was by far the most fun of the 3......I was pretty disappointed with both AoC and TSW to be honest.......

There was nothing unfair about it.  I remember sitting on AO the weekend that AoC came out and seeing how many people went over to play it and came back almost immediately.  AoC had a crappy launch and while it did eventually improve to some degree, it's still always been a game that's great for the first 20 levels of Tortage, then... not so much.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more

Um, of all the things to criticize about TSW, QUESTING is not the one I would pick -- investigation quests that require use of brain?  Yeah, WoW's always had a TON of those...

Agreed.  I always found it funny that for games they declare "mature", they always include the most immature elements.

"Hey, this is a mature game for mature players, so here, have some naked bouncing tits!"

The minute they slap the "mature" label on something, run.

Still those are far and few between.

You are right that there are a lot of people out there that may not want to put the effort to figure the investigation quests on their own and they will use the "cheat sites" instead. I'm a victim of the occassional slip myself in more than one occassion (I'm not much of an investigator on all things musical). Still, it is a feature and they serve a purpose that you won't find in pretty much anything else on the market right now.

I think we're coming full circle with this really. Once upon a time it was about raiding and reading tactics or cheat sites to beat the encounters or try them on our own. In this game it's about quests and having the freedom to do either. You can be a purist and try to solve everything without any "solution sites" involved, or you can just check the step by step sites. The difference is that, unlike raiding, you don't have peer pressure to succeed and you don't hold people back if you choose to be a purist.

Oh sure.  If you prefer NOT to use your brain, you may optionally use Google to cheat.  OR, if you still like using your brain maybe even use Google to look up NON-cheat sites for clues.  For either, there is an in-game browser -- the game is set in the modern day after all.

Currenlty atleast in the world of Themepark devs. Trion and Funcom are the only ones that are heading in the right direction. Offer more story content, open world stuff, and less on instances. If i wasnt playign Rift id be playing TSW as it is a great game.

Playing: FFXIV, DnL, and World of Warships
    Waiting on: Ashes of Creation

Spoken like someone who's never played Conan.  Not exactly a game for homophobes.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Except TSW is quite heavy on Instances and it's open world stuff is very questionable.

Yep, people will cheat, and they have on just about every video game ever published.  But the original poster was comparing TSW questing to 2005 WoW questing.  TSW asks people to use their brains, follow the storyline, and actually pay attention to  the world around them to solve the mystery.  They don't HAVE to use their brains, but at least TSW is asking. WoW has never asked players to do anything more than run kill and fetch errands, with the occasional escort quest thrown in.  And that's fine, but please don't tell us that TSW quests are the same as WoW circa 2005.

Smaller, very niche, non-hype raved MMOs tend to have those kind of communities.

Well... that's Conan... I mean... if there are no scantily clad to the point of M rating then it's not a world of Hyborbia or whatever you call Conan's world.

Speaking of AoC, one of the things that really irked me was the mandatory key button mashing combos... thing drove me nuts and the only game had to resort to playing with my numpad.

  • SetsunSetsun Member UncommonPosts: 286

"Funcom does a good job" LOL.

I love AO, was my first mmo and i still play it from time to time but Funcom does LOTS of mistakes.

Just look at AO, they have bugs for years now and no balance it's amazing how u say that. Play others game please.
