Planetside back in beta - sept 2003 was my fave game ever and i'd give up anything just to go bk to that time and relive it
Loads of things happened to ruin the game but i personally think it's a mix of things :P
Overall i belive time killed Planetside.
I'm very sad to see it in the state it's in All the devs leave and my Planetside universe ask the dev days are over *cries*

if SOE would get good devs that cared for the game, it would of never dead...

Well actually i spoke to smokejumper ages ago when he quit :P He said they were ruled by SOE management that wouldn't let them do what they want!
He told them that new bases were more important than BFRS but SOE wouldn't listen. Plus SOE forced them to make an expansion without testing in 3 months for release!
SOE ruined it, thats why the devs left and got fed up!

Here is my list of what ruind the game
1. Flail- The start of the bs overpowerd spam weapons from hell that required no skill
3. Recertifiacation crap- that made it easier(they combines certs for things) to field maxes, Reavers, Skeeters, tanks, ect.. Basicly all of the noob stuff that doesnt require skill
3. Rexo buff -So let me get this straight I can move around just as fast as a person in agi armor for a period of time, have more space in my inventory, and have more armor... OMGz Dood where do I /SiGn
4. Sketter Cof buff- Wee I know have a flying sniper rifle.. i 0WnZ
5. Caverns- One of the worst Expansion ever, and the most poorly designed expansion in the history of big name MMORPG companys...What were they smoking when they came up with that place and its ziplines.. Ewww
6. Didnt crack down on Hackers quick enough, it took them way to long to get a fix for certain speed step programs.. Plus the numerous COF and Infill spoter hacks.
7. Lib/Dev variants- Why... Like I didnt have enough problem avoiding all the tank/BFR/Reavers/Skeeter/Flail/Lib/Sunderer spam already.. Now you bring two more Uber spam weapons in the game that require no skill to operate
8. Lack of content for the ground soldiers- IE New bases, New weapons, New Mission, ect... The devs seem to want to make this into a vehicle game where everyone fights in vehicles... Most of us hate that and want to play a real FPS where we can run around and own stuff on foot.
9. BFR's- last bug certainly not least, I came to play Planetside not Mech Warriors.. The most horrific addition to any game eva (even worse then Shadowlands for Anarchy Online). I just really dont understand why.. I know they have been nerfed to death now, but the Flight Variant BFR is just insane.. The thing hops 500 feet in the air ever 3 seconds and spams you with artillery, Why is this thing still even in the game......
FPS games should require skill, so that the best of the best excell at it.. Not a game that any noob in a tank, Reaver, Flail, BFR. ect can spam doorways and kill tons of people... Thats not skill that lame and so is PS now.

yes, every thing u said is true, I stoped when the BFRs came out..I mean..with the BFRs.. I seen Noobs taking out Cr5 like it was nothing...and that hard to do with one XD

Like in the fact that when this game first came out it was nothing to see 3 or 4 conts poplocked and that was when they had 5 servers not 3 like today.. And back then each server (cont) could hold more people then they do now... But noadays you will only see 1 cont poplocked at PRIME TIME...
Its been that way for months now, stragely ever since all those changes I noted above started to go live.... Expecially the NooBFR's.

The game has change alot (or so it seems) since you left. Just gonna put what i think is going on now adays compared to back when you played.

They arn't nearly as powerful as when they 1st came out. 2 or 3 reavers or 2 MBTs could drop one now or even one or two infantry men who know what they r doing. Hell, even a cloaker who finds a stuipid pilot could drop one. Since they all seem to be noobs (as stated by you), that should be pretty easy to do.
All in all i love the game. IMO if you get caught in the open by a MBT/reaver/BFR, they arn't the noobs. You are for letting yourself be so exposed. Yes, people are noobs that camp doorways with these though and that is an entirely different story. There is still alot of skill in this game. Just don't foot zerg and you will be fine (ex. Cert a skeeter and bail on towers/BDs, where ever).
My thoughts on BFR? I don't really like them. If it were up to me i would toss them to the dogs. However, it is nice tho gun them in big armor fights for a change of pace. They aren't gonna go away anytime soon, so get use to them. Learn their weaknesses (yes, they have weaknesses, you damage their stuff so it doesn't operate as well) and you won't think they r so big anymore.
Somalan pretty much answered all questions. I only wanted to add several things.
First of all I think moving fights into the vehicle is a great idea. Pretty much all you FPSs are ground soldiers hitting each other, its nice for a change to see MASSIVE ground/aerial vehicle battles. I personaly dont care much about BFRs, but I appreciate one thing they contributed - they moved combat from camping base into the open field. Before BFRs, it usualy happens like this: a bunch of people would gather 5-15 heavy tanks, roll out into the open field, kill anything in their way, get to base, start camping it and thats it. After that its just fights inside the base, there were rarely any big fights outside.
But now, 4-5 BFRs can kill off any vehicle spam, so people have to be smart, bring their own BFRs (they are slow so they cant rush that quickly). The point is, with BFRs, land battles outside the base are spectacular!
I also disagree on the "killed" part. Yes, just after BFRs PS started losing people, but after they merged servers PS community started to grow again. Right now you can see very often 2 locked conts. I think what PS needs is more weapons, more vehicles, more everything. PS doesnt get that much advertisement as EQ2 - thats a problem. PS also doesnt get as much support and development, thats a problem too.

1. They were not for a long time and if you played long enough you would know this.. People used to complain about them as much as BFR's since frankly everyone had them for serveral months..Lots of people left in disgust of them aswell.. Do some digging around and find some links to the Old PS forums for proof of this.

3. Perhaps I should have reworded this statement so that you could understand.. Rexo is as agile as agility armor.. By that I mean side to side movement and munevering... So basicly I can dodge and avoid as easily in Rexo as I can in Agile armor, plus I have more inventory and 100 more armor...All this for only 3 certs and in todays PS... ALMOST EVERY is a REXO noob.
4. Yes they are.. And the most numerous.. We can thank the silly devs and there Balance Pass patch for that one.

Caves were a big success everyone in the world was in them when they first came out in 03, for about a 4 days and then people came above ground and the complaining began about how poorly designed and how much of a waste of time they were. The head dev was headhunted for months for this, when he(Smokejumper) finally quit he went to another forum board and let us know that that Expansion was not ready for release and it was rushed out by his superiors (SOE).
6. I report them all the time, one player in Particular that im sure of uses the COF hack and is killer from 100 feet with a amp of all things..Sad but its funny seeing him do it, to bad he still plays. Other hacks have been out for years and have been bugged, reported, emailed to the devs and they are still here.. Tsearch anyone? Do a search to find out exaclty what that is.
7. While its true that you can move out of there way ofcourse the fact remains that at a given time you will see more of them flying over your base then you see NME soldiers.. Agian I blame the balance pass for this. Plus if there smart they will fly outside of your AA range making them almost impossible to kill if you bunkered in your base or trying to assualt one.
8. Yup and I applaud there effort. For the first time in a long time it seems they are finally listening to the community. Only time will tell if they can back up thier words though.
9. GV BFR's are not the problem and hardly anyone has a complaint about them anymore.. Infact many (as I do) think they should get a slight armor buff.. Its the walking/flying Pogo sticks of death (FV BFR's) that is the problem right now. Any skilled player in one is next to impossible to kill, since when ever there in trouble they will just pogo away(each jump is serveral hundred meters) and be gone. On emerald you will rarely see someone in one get killed easily, most of the time it takes a huge effort to take ONE out.

U cant maneuver in rexo better then in agile. That statement is false.
And I dont see the number of mossies being greater then the amount of soldiers, a single AA max will tear up 5 mossies no problem

Heh, was gonna say that but someone beat me to it. If you fight someone who is good and knows how to move in agile they will be able to bounce around you like a hyper-spastic child in dire need of an @ss kicking (i hate those people so much, i just wanna strangle them when they kill me).
And to people saying planetside is dead. It is not dead, just because you left the game doesn't mean everyone followed you. There are 37,545 active characters (note that i said characters, the number of accounts could range from 37,545 accounts to 4,694; the lowest number assuming everyone has 8 chars and plays them all, the highest number meaning everyone has 1 char). While this sounds low according to other MMOs, it's enough @ss for me to kick.

tiny you're an idiot you know that. i don't even know where to begin, dosen't even seem like you played the same friggin game. too many libs are you kidding me? i've never seen more then 7 libs at one base unless it was an outfit event where they all had libs, mind you i played on emerald.
you will NEVER EVER see more vehicles then soldiers. you're just speculating right out of your ass and it's annoying.
edit: even if there are multiple high flying libs the bombs don't drop for literally 5+ seconds, PLENTY of time to manuever. when i was a lib pilot my bomber hardly got any kills, after doing low flying bombing we owned. fortunatly for you very VERY few people even do that and most of them suck at it and don't bother.
Actually, a VS AA max's full clip will drop a skeeter (7 shots) and it can empty it's clip in 10 sec (very vauge guess). If you have been locked on for about 3 secs chances are you are getting hit right now and about dead. Oh ya, did i mention the projectles still track the aircraft ofter the lock is broken?
Seriously, i have been a locked on by an AA max, hit the afterbunners got pretty far but still died a grid and a half away. Missile lock broke about 3/4 of a grid from maxes location.
No. One AA max (maybe TR burster) couldn't own 5 skeeters due to the fact that they all woulda smacked their afterbunners after the hintest sign of an AA max.
VS max has the best chance here becuase he can avoid getting hit for a while. One clip = dead mossie. TR max is 2nd best to survive becuase of the AOE splash dmg. NC max will have some trouble, but all he has to do is hide behind a tree, lock on and shoot, he doesnt have to keep the lock, plus he can use his shield in between reloads.

What killed the game for me, personally, was the slow but steady, to now dominant shift from grunt combat to pure vehicles. What used to be great combat all around, is now combat dominated by vehicles on nearly 90% of the terrain (including towers, and anything near a door). Grunts have no place aside from indoor meat grinders. Aircraft are bogus, yeah I said it! BFRs are right on their heels.

Personally, I like the caves (it is now the best place to get CR because the cap time is shorter). And the BFR's are pretty easily owned, they are huge targets and have been nerfed enough that they can be taken down by only 1 or 2 folks with jammers, etc.
I agree with the very first post. The main problem is just TIME. Wow came out and people wanted to do something new. There are still a lot of big fights in Auraxis but every game will have turnover and if number of new folks < number of old folks who leave, then numbers will dwindle.
Every MMORPG, heck, every other game, has the problem of what to do after it is a few years old. Give WoW a couple more years and the next latest and greatest will come out and lots of people will leave WoW for it.
The only way to bring in a significant number of new players is to have a big re-vamp, to make the old game into a new game. That effectively means a complete game re-write with a new graphics engine, extra variety on what you can do (eg add crafting) but allowing people to keep their characters. Think about it, imagine PS but using the Far-Cry engine.
Would this ever be done? Purely depends if it would be profitable.

Reavers are good for taking out infantry, although like someone said - infantry may be quite hard to find now. They're good for taking out anything coming out of towers I would say... Personally I think that they're just fun to pilot and to get you places fast (such as over mountainous terrain). And if it's fun and a game, then what's the problem? The only way it would not be incredibly fun is if you're in a battle while piloting a mosquito (lol). You'd get so owned unless you were a good pilot, and even then you wouldn't be able to kill anyone unless you found some lone infantry on the outskirts of the battle without anti-vehicle or anti-aircraft weaponry. I used to like doing fly-bys under the enemy bridges in their base when the fighting was heated, but too often were enemy mines placed under the bridges and generally scattered across the ground. LOL. I would, an airplane, get blown away by a landmine. Interesting situation, but that's the risk I took. It was great...
Another situation in which airplanes would be good is when mass infantry are accessing outside vehicle terminals in a combat situation. If the fighting's intense, then you take a reaver and fly it through the chaos (someone has less of a chance to notice you) to a vehicle terminal and unload your missiles on it, destroying the console and killing about eight people or so. This would probably be a suicide run, but who cares. I'd take a mosquito and crash it into the console when people were there, but the exploding wreckage didn't seem to have much of an effect on them... It did on me though.

Yeah. I can personally testify in favor of this statement. BFRs are decent if you've got cover (meaning they can do a fair amount of damage) but they move slowly which means no running away from a fight if your systems are down. I was the gunner for a BFR once and another guy was the pilot. There was one infantryman on us that had come out of a forest and thrown a jammer grenade at us. It locked up our systems and he was shooting radiation blasts at us. We couldn't get away from him because we were moving too slowly and we had not jumpjets. I think the radiation was leaking through the BFR and killing us so we both got out and then he owned the pilot and next was me. There was our BFR sitting by itself on the edge of a forest with both the gunner and pilot dead. Man, we sucked...
P.S. Did I mention that I was once shot down by a shotgun in an airplane while hovering around a tower?

Actually what killed planetside is VERY simple:
- It offers NOTHING that you can't get from a standard online FPS game that has no fee.
THAT is what killed it. The only people who really play PS anymore are Station Pass people who play it only occasionally. There is a hardcore core of people who actually play PS as their primary game but it's dwindling.
Bottom line:
Currently the game is NOT worth a monthly fee. As I said the *only* reason I play it is I have the Station Pass for EQ2. With EQ2 on there the digital updates are free for me and PlanetSide is effectively like $6 a month for me.

I think Lot of things Hurt this game , but nothing killed it per say, alot of people still play,
1) Other MMO ( City of Heros, WOW, EQ2, im sure theres more)
2) With every change, Poeple complain that the Devs hate them and leave.
3) The biggest i think is PS is not SOE cash cow ( think Everquest ) They put as much money into developing as they take in, They are in business to make money
My thought, Ive been a TR Emrald for almost 2 yrs now and dont see any games that make me want to stop playing. I would like to see them merge the severs so we can have the big pop back again, But I dont see that happening. ( SOE prove me wrong )
Well i think 2 major things
1)time.Unlike a mmorpg where there can easily add new mobs,dungeons and quests a mmofps is a shoot them up thing.That bores easily just because of the nature of fps been very repeatitive.And due to imbalances easily been created with additions of weapons they always have to be careful in adding anything
2)whining.Constant whining and SoE actually listening to whiners have killed uniqueness.Everyone i know who played PS from launch say it was far better at launch then now.Yes and even I who played vs which was generally considered weakest at launch was happier then.
