...the title is bound to deceive, and this is the point... My good friend was over watching the Vikes game with me yesterday (Vikes FTW), and we started talking about the much anticipated CoV release... We are both playing beta right now, and loving it! Anyways, we had a group of friends 3 years ago that all played SWG constantly since the buggy launch... We were all absolutely in love with this game - then came along a little thing called the holocron and ended everything... Now, this thread isn't about SWG, but it is about the fact that yesterday, my good friend and I actually said "I wish there was a MMO that was Star Wars"... We had to laugh because we are both diehard SW fans and coincidentally both forgot that SWG existed, this is how bad the situation for a SW MMO is!!! We honestly bypassed thinking about SWG, when we both stood there and said out of instinct, that we 'want a Star Wars MMO'...
And this is where I stand today... I desperately want a SW based MMO...

Is it? Either that or it will be 3 years this spring... Time flies by soooo fast...
I reckon a Star Wars MMO should be like Planetside but with Star Wars skins.
Well, similar to Planetside but I suspect you know what I mean. The whole premise of SW is a galactic war and lvl grinding and point and click fights just dont cut the mustard.
Actually SW and RPG dont go well in the same sentence... SW is for action games, where you use your skill with the keyboard/gamepad to do cool effects in a lightsaber fight, or to be a good at fighting with aircraft... a point/click game isnt for the SW universe...

Star Wars should really be an MMOFPS with good story content and possibly quest systems to get neat items. SWG really doesn't cater to the true star wars fans because most star wars fans enjoy a much more FPS style game. We love missions and quests and finding cool items but we don't like having to "level" in a game.
I like SWG, don't get me wrong, but the whole system being a traditional style MMO hurts the game balance really. Not to mention having Jedi in the current timeline of the game really kills it for me.
But overall this 1 point is very valid:
Most Star Wars gaming fans are NOT looking for a traditional MMORPG, they want an MMOFPS.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
First, SWG *is* about 27 or 28 months old.
Second, I agree with much of the frustration with SWG, however I still find it entertaining. You are correct about the point and click aspect of SWG ground game, however the space game is not such. It is a true space sim and is very much twitch oriented, and actually does feel like SW. I'm not saying it is the best space sim in existance, just that for an MMO, it is doing pretty well, is unique to SWG, and feels part of the SW universe.
SWG started out very much feeling like the Star Wars universe. I thought LA/SOE did a great of job of creating the game's environments.
Unfortunately game mechanics like Jedi, Player Cities, and lack of a GCW borked the game.

Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
I could care less about the actual Star Wars theme, so I was fine with SWG... until the holocrons.

i wouldn't mind jedis if there was about 4 a server. hell, i'd settle for jedis just not being the majority.

People still play this game? This game is definately a more casual play than anything. I did everything that I wanted to do inside a month, including hitting lvl 80.
This game turned into Animal Crossing with really cool Star Wars music is all...pity.

SWG in its current state is a carebear paradise.
EXACTLY how I felt.
I was so pi$$ed with the way Lucas/SOE said they would not make becoming a Jedi a pointless grind fest and yet in the end thats EXACTLY what they did. But they werent even satisfied to screw it up that badly, they had to make it so your main became redundant too.
SWG was the biggest Balls UP! of an MMO to date Im sorry. It turned this committed star wars fan into someone who can now take or leave the entire SW genre....
I have my DVD's of A New Hope, ESB and RoTJ and the rest I will just try and foget they ever screwed up the universe so badly by even introducing it all....
Jaja Binks..... Give me STRENGTH!!

I think SWG had the best world, music, character models, and atmosphere of any MMORPG I have played, and I am not some huge SW fan either. It just felt so right in so many ways. Then came the lack of depth and it all died. I even thought the crafting was some of the best ever (just a few steps from being perfect), and that the ranged fighting was done well. I even kinda liked the way mobs spawned with the lairs and all, although they could be a bit slow spawning in out of the way places. For me, the game just could never recover from making it so easy that if you went up the right lines, you could kill anything in the game solo. And lets not start on the whole jedi fiasco(s). Probably would have been a better game if they never promised to allow players to become jedis anyway.
Everyone was worried about the game becoming EQ in space, but I think that in the end, it might have been a better game that way. I think I would try the game again if they just took the worlds and the characters and the atmosphere and just designed an entirely new game from that (although I would hope they kept bio-engineering, that was the most fun I had crafting in any game, ever).
Yeah thats a genuine MMO classic irony isnt it...
"SWG will just be EQ in space" the trolls cried.
If only they were right... I might still be playing it today.... as it is.... it WISHES it was as good as EQ in space.

The very successful Knights of the Old Republic was a FPS? So...No to your statement.
That is the problem with generalizations.... they don't fit everyone, not even "most" (I love that word, you say nothing, yet it sounds much). Personally I know about 3 or 4 people who would play an RPG oriented SW MMO, *if* there would be a good one.

For PC were also excellent games... Dark Forces particularly was ahead of its time and under rated. In fact if anything it was those games that gave me such high hopes for SWG.
In Fairness SWG was excellent in many ways. I thought the general feel of the universe and the look of the characters was spot on.
But the first time you see someone standing on a spawn point AFK and you come back 12 hours later and they are still there.... It breaks the suspension of disbelief somewhat. Considering this was there in Beta, release and is still there.... its just not good enough and it is the most basic symptom of a sickness that runs to the very core of the design of the gameplay.
Very disapointing.
