Opinions on what to spend my cash on?

I have Planetside and it is great. I was thinking of getting a RPG as well. Anyone have any thoughts on a MMORPG that is not all PvP? ::?^)::

If you want an MMORPG I say wait until Horizons is released.

For a single player RPG I strongly recommend Morrowind. That is a kick ass game.

If you want to "win" (meaning getting the high end game) EQ is probably out. 2 to 3 hours a night isn't nearly enough.

Do you want fantasy or Sci-Fi?

I agree, EQ for now.  Hopefully Horizons will be good if you want to wait a month and a half or so.

Murt, You gonna play EQ II over Horizons? Just wanted to ask why? I havent looked into EQ II too much as I am looking for a change from EQ and Horizons just seems too good.

If you are new to mmorpg games then don't listen to those telling you wait for a game to come out just go with one that is out and tried.

You end up waiting for months or years and be dissapointment.

Horizons,EQ2,WoW this games have not been tried and people are reviewing it purely on their impression of what the game might be like and not what it is or will be like.

    So go EQ or DAoC.

If sci fi only then go SWG.

I am very concerned about all the advice that suggests newbies ought to play EQ. I would have agreed with you at one point, but there have been a number of people who have commented that due to the MMOG's maturity and number of high level expansion packs, the lowbie zones are barely populated.

Is there any truth to this rumour? Can anyone provide any numbers?

Before we all tell new MMOG players to play x game we really must qualify our advice and remember to view the game from the perspective of a new player, not a seasoned MMOG veteran.

EQ is still very new player friendly imo.  They have completely redone the entry level zone quests for all of the races to make them easy to learn, fun to do, and have good rewards to help you get through the entry levels easier.

The lower level zones are no longer so crowded that you have to fight over things to kill.  There are constantly people just starting EQ for the first time or starting over with new characters to try a different class or race.

They have also accelerated the leveling process from levels 1 to 10 to help new players get into more content quickly.  You no longer lose exp when you die for those levels and your equipment stays on you so you dont have to go try to find your corpse.

I wouldnt shy away from EQ because of any rumors about it not being new player friendly by any means.  It might take you a bit longer to meet as many people since the lower level zones will not be as crowded but there is lots of fun to be had especially if you have a friend or two starting the game with you.

Providing numbers is pretty much impossible because there are like 30+ servers and hundreds of zones on each one which at any given time could have a different number of people playing in them.  Some of the old zones that used to be favorite haunts dont see the traffic they used to but with the new "looking for group" search tool its usually not hard to find a large number of people who are similar in level and looking for an adventure.

There is a brand new expansion bringing lots of new content to all levels as well which always helps keeping people coming back.

EQ has however always had a steep learning curve and that hasnt changed as far as I can tell.  Many people think that complexity is one of the great things about it though.

Okay I've played EQ 55 Druid and still playing here and there, Played Anarchy Online several 170+ characters.

Okay if you want a game to play online right now I would suggest Anarchy Online. A new expansion just came out and there's a lot of people playing new Characters and one thing that is pretty cool is that there are Greeters who welcome you to the world of Rubi-Ka and just go over basic things with you. They are volunteers not GM's, we all know we don't read directions and AO is a fun game at low levels.

I started a new char the other day on EQ and I was pretty much alone running from stupid bats that were ganking me.

FYI I'm waiting for EQII and might play Horizons

Man did you pick the WRONG place to get a straight answer.

Look, everyone here has their own opinions on what mmorpg are good.  And guess what- for every opinion someone has ANOTHER person has an opinion on THEIR opinion.  Noone here has your exact tastes or knows you well enough to suggest the most compatable game for you.  So what do you do?

If you're new to mmorpgs, take these opinions for what their worth (after all you did ask for them).  Also, go to the GAMES LIST on here and read up on it.  Then go to the store and LOOK at the games.  From all this, you'll probably have what game you want already in mind by the time you even get to the store. So buy it, try it, and if it don't work your rpg mojo- return it.  Most mmorpgs now-a-days, give you a free month just for this purpose.  G'luck.

ive only heard things like that about eq, also how the veteran players tend to be cranky ::=^~::. i started daoc late last year, and every1 was pretty friendly, and its farely simple, so id suggest that as a beginners mmorpg.

EQ has to be the simplistic MMORPG I've every played...  The only thing complicated about EQ is all the proper nouns, learning the major zones and memorizing the 2 million acronyms every one uses.

You can literally Play EQ while watching TV, playing another game, while in the shower, and away at the store. (Yes, I've played EQ while doing all the above)

The higher level you get the more pigeon holed your character will become. After awhile a simple marco's can the control the game while your busy chatting away.

This isn't as true if your soloing.. and I am being simplistic, but I've found this to be true with number of classes. On raids you can often follow on someone, and/or push the A key then go walk the dog.

Newer MMORPG's have learned from this mistake, and now make active skills that have to pushed during combat.

Pushing a button is better than not

Before you buy EQ, ask yourself. How much to like sitting around doing nothing. If you answer "I love that!" Then EQ is game for you. If not, go with something else.

EQ = everything takes to damn long.

Am I the only one who has looked at EQII, heard about the graphics and thought EQ expansion? I've looked at the Horizons FAQ and looked at the basic EQII FAQ (sparse with information) and I cannot equate Horizons to EQ. At all.

Also, I don't see any features in EQII that are not already present in next gen MMOG's. Like I say, it's down to the implementation that will give a game it's particular feel.

Perhaps it is me. Despite being an old EQ fan, I look at EQII and think that SoE just decided to add on all these features to bring EQ uptodate rather than sitting down and deciding to implement such features as a fundamental game design to alter how the game is played.

I'm getting a little bit cynical about next gen claims which are based on graphics. I want HARD information .. implementating x feature isn't enough. I want to know WHY these features are being implemented and HOW they will affect gameplay.

EQII will be huge and SoE will be hoping that EQ players and old skool EQ players will switch across to EQII. I know I'm in the minority but I don't see anything to get real excited about when I look at EQII. Once there's more information on how these features when implemented will affect gameplay then I may start to get sweaty palms again.

I am a longtime EQ player that is happy with it, but looking for a change just the same as I was back when I was playing UO and EQ came out. I will be dumping EQ for Horizions without question. Not sure if I am even going to bother with EQ II at this point. I want a change of scenery and after following it for quite some time Horizons is it.

They said shadowbane was good so what does that prove few over excited people that saw just a small portion of a game.
