If EQN really will be a sandbox mmorpg, it will be related to EQ1 & 2 in name and lore only. It will be to EQ1 & 2 as AC2 was to AC1 and we all know how that panned out. I can hear the purist fans calling for their heads now...

Im beleive its gonna be a hybrid style game, Smed used the wording Largest sandbox Style game. Stle makes me beleive it will be a mix between sandobx and themeparkish will be intresting how they pull it off.

“We discovered that we really weren’t interested in [making Facebook games] as a company, and as a result, the games just didn’t come out to the quality level that we were happy with,” Smedley explained. “So we decided that we didn’t want to be in that space. I gotta tell you, I’m not a fan of the Facebook game.

    The evidence is in PS2.

Aside from being released too early( I was in early beta for months, and many many of the more noticable bugs that the game released with were in the game 3 months prior to release, and the testers were trying tp bring them to deve attention)

Planetside has NO content at all asidefrom the typical FPS grind.  With all the 2x XP days they keep doing, people are blowing through the levels and getting enough certs to buy anything they want.

Is PS2 fun as a FPS in concerned? Yes it is.   Is it anything more then a FPS(depsite all the propaganda SOE tries to put out) Not even close.  PS2 caters to the XP mongers you typically find in CoD and BF, and any shred of strategic gameplay goes out the window due to how easy it is to just pull whatever vehicle your empire needs (typically just 50 MBT's and a shit ton of liberators and ESF's) and roll with the zerg.

No one defends, as defence nets little to no XP gain compred to taking base after base with the zerg.

Continents are only taken by one empire(and thus netting a bonus) when that empire has 70+% of the population, and its grand game of musical chairs.  When one empire moves in a ton of players ot a continent, the other two empires just leave to take a less populated continent, and this just goes back and forth.  When you have a continent with 2 or 3 evenly populated teams, then you just get three giant zerg armies moving around the map dodging each other and taking territory that the enemy zerg just left.

And Smed is just making it worse.  There is a lot more he could be doing to make the game better in its current state, namely better design of the bases(one reason no one defense, except for the few large facilites, bases are 100% undefensible, even if you have the superior numbers).  Something could be done to limit the numbers of vehicles on the battlefield at one time.  As it is, infantry engagements are few and far between, and anytime you get a fun infantry fight going, its not long before 30 tanks and 20 liberators roll up and just blow everyone to bits, and why.

But what IS smedley doing? well same thing as in beta.  Ingoring glaring bugs that have been in the game since beta, swatting aside the majority of players calling for smarter base design and a better meta game, and just fluffing the in game store.  Hey they are putting in another continent as well.  The art director said the art team has no time to FIX the bases that the vast majority of the players say are broken, because their priority is to put in another continent...you know, as it is, most players will avoid the populated continents so they can easily take base after base on underpopulated continents(taking a base is the fastest way to net XP if you can do it quickly).  So a fourth continent will just mean yet anothet empty space barren of conflict that players can take bases at without having to fight.  Oh and that says nothing that this fourth base will guess what, have the same broken base designs that the other three already have.

BUT...having a fourth continent will make the advertisments look better...

There is also almost no infantry gameplay when it comes to large battles.  Infantry are not even needed to take a base.  All you need is to get a few tanks or liberators in range of the small outhouse spawn rooms, and camp the two doors that defenders need to get out.  And bam, you just took the base.  All that is needed is one single infantry to come in, without fear of dying, and stand next to the capture point.  There are a few bases like tech plants and biodomes that are mostly infantry engagements, but these usually turn into giant camp fests where the defenders will just farm XP of the attackers.

tl;dr version.  Smedley is blow smoke out his ass.

I could not agree with you any more! The only bases that people defend are the bio labs and they only do that if there is a large force outside because its the only bases that tanks and planes can't really do a lot with. Then it just becomes a big cluster because of the poor ass rendering that game does, you can have someone right in front of you and them not even be rendered on the screen, yet if they see you, they can kill you and you have no clue as to why you just died. I joined an outfit that is pretty large, got around 500 active members and there is no real tactics involved in taking bases, its just like the person above said, go around and take bases that aren't defended and IF there is enough people, hang out at a bio lab and rake in the cert points. Anti-Air and Anti-Tank is a joke in this game. It can take at least 4-6 shots depending on the vehicle to take down, yet every single one of those vehicles can kill an entire group of folks in 1 shot. The balance in this game is a joke and the base structures (most of them) are completely undefendable. This is an FPS game, how the heck can they release an FPS game that can't even render the people in the game world correctly?

You know how you can not like someone you have never met? I have never hated anyone in my life worse then smedley. He has done nothing but ruin the games he touchs and yet sony does nothing about this piece of crap that shouldnt even be allowed to breathe the same air as me or the rest of the human race. I will say this. I am not a violent person, but I swear that if I ever see smedley in real life, I will punch him right in the freaking face. The only thing that man has learned over the years is that sometimes he has to give out a fake "Im sorry" when he royally screws up. He doesn't mean it at all. He doesn't even understand what he is saying he is sorry for, he just knows that it may take some of the heat off him if he does. Sony really needs to fire his ass!

haha yeah no kidding...This guy has blown more smoke over the years than all the factories in Pittsburgh.....

    1. first we'll see what EQ NExt turns out like

    2. we'll see what he does if EQ next does not take off

    3. EQ2 was supposed t obe the successor to EQ but when it started to struggle with sales and was losing tons of customers to WoW, he WoWified the game

I can't help but think that, in some way, on some level, this amazing blog posted at Wolfsheadonline back in 2010 had at least some influence on Smed's new attitude and approach.

Particularly the last line, which sums it up beautifully.

"It’s time to lead, not follow. The ball is in your court Mr. Smedley."

I agree with you 100%, Teala.

In terms of finally opening eyes and ears, I have to say "what the hell took so long?". Smedley is now finally coming out and acknowledging something that many gamers have sensed, and spoken out about, for several years now. The genre has been stuck in the mud, slowly sinking, and in dire need of something new to give it a fresh direction and new life.

Many players have said that while you have your smaller, indie companies who have made their best efforts to deliver on that new direction (and my hat is off to them for at least trying, whether they succeeded or not), that it's a major AAA developer with the financial wherewithall, and the manpower that could really make it happen.

Unfortunately, all the big companies - SOE included - have been too busy following the $$$, falling into the rut of being "me-too" developers, trying to copy everything Blizzard's doing, rather than stepping out from WoW's shadow and trying something new. They've been playing it too safe, and the genre on the whole has suffered for it.

I have this really frustrating "love/hate" relationship with Smed right now. I do not like crap he's pulled in the past. I do not like how he's gone back on his words regarding things that would or wouldn't happen in their other games.

But in regards to his take on the state of the genre and where it needs to go, damned if I would not like to walk up to him, shake his hand and say "Thank You" - at least for acknowledging that the problem exists and, at least ostensibly, seeking to correct it and hopefully get the genre back on the right track.

Will he follow through? Well, that's where I keep going back to not liking him for the crap he's pulled in the past...

I so want to believe his words are 100% heartfelt and genuine and that it's not just "bold sounding PR".

    Time will tell either way.

    The future is sandbox...
Themepark mmo's have been done way to much.
    It brings nothing but boredom.

Sandbox on the other hand has something realy special, when done right ;)
Look at Eve....release date 2003 and still going.
Only 1 themepark pulled that off and thats WoW.

With Archeage in development i hope we get our hands on a good sandbox + World of Darkness but who knows when that gets into a closed / open beta.
Wont even name Darkfall as that studio is nothing but fake promises and bad karma.

Guildwars 2 one of the best themepark ever made makes me logout after 15 minutes, maybe iam tired of themeparks or mmo's.
But this genre is like incest, it breeds its own kind, all the blood is the same be it in a diffrent shell.

    Its quests or lobby pvp.
