Thank you for the welcome, Anarchyart, your the second person who has told me that EQ2 has been more addictive since the new expansion, I think I just may give it a try to tide me over until Vanguard, I'll start joining guilds a year before launch if I don't do something besides UO. * I didn't say UO, shhh...*
If they make the game sort of like eq1 and add more solo content and also keep asheron's call 1 in mind when making the game then it would be great. IMHO
It's amazing how people have strong opinions and are able to advice their friends about not playing a game that they don't know even 1% of gameplay, content, characters, .... . Claith, did you played EQ1 when only Ruins of Kunark and Velious expansions existed ? Have you felt the acomplishment of taking Avatar of War, or any other Velious boss mobs down, after your guild wiped several times? Thats the true essence of MMORPG. Soloing through 50 or 60 lvls you can get on a normal RPG without spending money on a monthly fee. MMORPG means Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game, and thats what EQ1 until Velious expansion was. And guess what, that was made 7 or 8 years ago by the same people making Vanguard atm. Imagine what they can do now!
I'm basing my opinion on what i know Sigil team did in the past. This is a fact. And hoping they will do even better in the near future with all the resources that exist now. I now they will not disapoint me and that will have alot of fun playing V:SOH.
Btw, please don't play V:SOH if you think like Claith. You would ruin all the fun!
I don't know whether the game will suck or not but I agree that forced grouping sucks. It would be wise for any mmorpg to include enough solo quests to allow for a player to reach the level cap without grouping. In doing so they should also have lots of group and raid content for people who have the time and resources to commit to those kinds of things.
If you play the game to the level cap solo..you still haven't defeated the purpose of an mmo. THAT PURPOSE IS TO EARN THE CREATORS A STEADY FAT MONTHLY INCOME. From a gameplay perspective, the purpose isn't broken either. There will always be those rare moments when the solo player will feel like (or have time for) grouping and can play through those group quests and raids. The MMO aspect is also still in tact because even during solo questing, you will still socialize and interact with other players even if it's just chatting with your guild or clan or whispering to a personal friend. As for recommendations that solo players just stick to offline single player RPGs...NO. People should play what they prefer...if they prefer online games that is what they should play, period. It would only help, not harm the industry if soloers were taken care of by these games...it would only result in more customers for the industry. That would in turn result in more money for the developement of more and better MMO games.
To those who really love groups and raids, solo quests for all levels doesn't stop you and those like you from grouping and raiding your way to the top. Both types of plyers can harmoniously coexist in the same game. It's stupid for devs to ass soloers out of quests because having enough solo quests doesn't hurt the game. If someone thinks it hurts the game (which would be the only practical reason to exclude a sufficent number of them), prove it! provide some historical or even current title based factual data to prove it.
I've played Starwars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, and Final Fantasy XI. I remember watching my brother and his friend playing Lineage 2 and EverQuest2 a few seats away from me and going. why the heck am i playing this?
I enjoyed the depth of FFXI, the fun factor of WoW pvp, and the overall environment of SWG. But seeing Vanguard, and reading a few of the fan sites already poping up, it seems like this game has promise behind it. I'll most likely be going for this when it hits release date.
Not having played EQ2, all i have to go on is what my bro and his friends were doing. and it seemed to be quite invigorating. So hopefully as development continues, it won't turn into another "BLAH" game.
Originally posted by claith I was looking forward to this game ,but not anymore, its gonna be nothing but an EQ2 clone of forced grouping and bullshit, they have'nt learned anything ,have they? Lol, man you are soooo out of touch, try reading Vanguard forums before you bash one of probably the most innovating and refreshing MMO since EQ1.
EQ1 is the longest running MMO ever , and thats not cause 'it sucks'.
EQ2 was anticipated as a sequal to EQ1 which, to astonshment of many EQ player, was not anything like EQ1.
A huge part of the 'old' EQ community has been travelling between MMOs, looking for that old Eq-feel.
Many of them have high hopes of Vanguard bringing back the challenges and feel of EQ1, including myself
Imo all MMOs played after EQ1 are FAR too easy, its appauling to lvl a character to lvl60 in a matter of 2 months (WoWarcraft). I for one miss the hard gameplay of Everquest 1.
And as to your complaint about grouping, why on earth are you playing a game that bases its gameplay on community (MM), if you want to solo alot and have all content to yourself you should be playing Diablo or some other helterskelter game.
Vanguard will come and rock the MMO community and will draw a huge amount of players, you can leave that in the capable hands of Brad MqQuaid, basically the inventor of largescale DnD online gaming.

Do I have any doubts that this game is going to turn out better than EQ2? Not really. I do enjoy EQ2, but it just didn't go the way I was hoping for in terms of the new world of EQ. That being said, I've come to terms with the fact that no game will give the same feeling that I got out of my two years of oldschool Everquest, and I don't think there ever will be an MMO that will have quite the success as EQ does. At least not until they take MMORPG gaming into a fully integrated VR network system. Ever read the Otherland series by Tad Williams?
I don't believe that Vanguard, even though its from the minds of the old EQ devs, will be an exception to this. It looks like it's going to be a good game and a breath of fresh air for those who are tired of games like WoW and EQ2, but Everquest was like a first love and there just won't be another one like it as far as I'm concerned.
I often debate this with myself. Will anything ever compare to EQ1 - as the first love analogy is quite fitting. However, after thinking about what it was I loved about EQ1 that seems to be missing in all of the many newer mmo games I have played its boils down to quite a bit. EQ has so many more aspects which affected gameplay than any mmo i have experienced and each one contributed to the joy of playing (whether or not I thought so at the time).
It seems most of the newer games are trying to appeal to wider audiences and are doing so by reducing the games complexities, which in effect is reducing the immersiveness of the games.
Things like having to retrieve your corpse, find someone to give you a port or struggle making the journey on foot (pre-pop), have spells for your class only located in opposing faction cities, losing exp and possibly level when you die, losing your gear if you couldnt retrieve your corpse, and so forth.
Most people hated this stuff but I think it was all part of the key ingredients to the success of everquest. What it did was cause a challenge, reinforced community, gave each class a unique responsibility - and most importantly, and the fact I think most people overlook is it caused us all to get upset or angry from time to time - which caused you to have (dont laugh cause its true) an emotional bond with the game.
Anyway... the were many other things in EQ1 that are not existent in other mmos today.
After checking out the Vanguard site I have very high hopes for the game. I have faith that Brad McQuaid will outdue himself even more than he did for eq1.

well not sure what ya mean by this.....wow is far more successfull than eq ever was in terms of a player base.
Everquest was like a first love and there just won't be another one like it as far as I'm concerned.
i feel the same way.....i played 3 years of eq and no game has made me addicted quite like eq did. but theres also people that feel the same way about other games that were "their first love" such as daoc and even wow.
i would never go back to eq as it stands now unless they came out with a classic pre pop or pre kunark server. but why do that when i can just wait for vanguard

just my honest opinions
Maybe success wasn't the right word. Addictiveness perhaps? That probably fits better. But still, WoW has been out for a tad less than a year and has amassed the greatest player base of all MMO games out there, kudoes to Blizzard for that. I wonder what it's going to look like five years from now though. EQ seems to be going pretty strong still after more than six on the market.
An EQ server that played and looked just like it did before the released Luclin. That'd be cool, but, as you said, hopefully Vanguard will help fill that old void caused by missing EQ Live.

ya i figured thats what ya ment, here is a intresting quote for ya....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In general, players view all their subsequent virtual worlds in the light cast from their first one. They will demand that features from their first world be added to their current world, even if those very features were partly responsible for why they left the first world. They'll say they hate treadmills, but if their first experience was in a virtual world with treadmills, then they'll gravitate towards other virtual worlds with treadmills, all the while still hating them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
that is why vanguard will be a hit imo, and that is why so many old eq players are looking forward to this game
Well I'll agree that EQ2 is nothing like the game I knew and loved, EQ1 (also referred to as EQLive now). But you must realize that Brad McQuaid was the producer of Everquest 1 and has no control over the disaster you have experienced with EQ2, especially following EQ2's revamp.
Sigil has been quite forthcoming about these concerns and discusses them at length on how they intend to avoid them with Vanguard.
You should visit their forums and fan sites and see what's been revealed, especially lately. I think you may change your mind and give this game a try. I know I will!
Originally posted by Derekeen well not sure what ya mean by this.....wow is far more successfull than eq ever was in terms of a player base.
WoW is success full in term of making money yes. For me as gamer that is not nessesary and success criteria. I have never played WoW I heared enough about it to not want to play it so cant tell you details. WoW is mainstream game and that is not equal quality and exiting challenging gameplay.
I played EQ1 for 5 years but the first 3 was the most fun because I still grouped. Last 2 years I was into raiding but not my preffered since you need to commit 3-5 at preffered 6-7 days a week.
When EQ2 development started they had some very innovative ideas but what they released was a Wow clone just a bad one. DnL actually implement some of the ideas it seems lets pray they stick to it.
If you read the boards like I do, because there is no game where I can have fun to play now, then you notice there is not so few like me waiting and hoping for a game like Vanguard. Tne game that promise hard and challenging gameplay oppose to WoW easy and trivial. They promise extra focus on social and community what is made people play EQ1 for 5-6 years. All the one I know quit got tired of SoE spoiling the game make everything easier and boring. Other quit because all they know left already.
Come back in 3 years and tell me wow was biggest success because 2 million players have played for 4 years then I agree with you but i doubt it be true.

actually you should have quoted me because i was the original person that said that heh..
don't take that statement for more than it was my friend, i was not saying wow > eq by any means
wow just has made alot more money than eq, that was my point...will it still be as big 4 years from now? any answer to that would be pure speculation at this point...
I think one of the things you have to remember is that Eq1, eq2, Van soh are online games. Grouping is a part of game. If you dont like grouping play an offline game. I never had much trouble finding groups in EQ2.
Secondly i dont believe the game will be linear. If you read the FAQ on the site you would have known that this is far from the truth.
I believe that Vanguard SOH will breath fresh air to the MMORPG industry.
From what I have seen of V:SOH it will aim to be the real EQ2. Is it going to be alot like EQ1? You bet which is a great if you liked EQ1 (Which I do very much ) There is nothing wrong with making a new version of something that so many loved. All that said this game will be different from EQ1 as well the classes might have the same names but the Devs has said many times that they share little with there EQ1 name sakes. Grouping is not forced all class can solo, but the best rewards (exp/loot) will come to those that group/raid. No teleports no instance zones and a harsh death pentaly all that means is that will be for those that like to earn what they get rather than be handed it on a silver platter.
V:SOH will not be for everyone and thus wont get the same number of players as WoW, but they are in it for the long haul. Brad has said he would be over the moon with 250,000 accounts active for 5 years. Im sure it will do alot better than that. Also remmber if you have looked at some of the screan shots and thought they look like junk remmber they have only just gone into Beta1 the game is 6 - 9 months away from being ready and we have been told the graphics will get better and many are impressed with the way they look now.
I too have high hopes for V:SoH. I long for the anticipation I had every day to get on to play AC1. I currently play EQ2 and although I like the game, I just don't get the immersed feeling I had when I played AC1. I hope V:SoH can bring that back for me.
I've never played EQ1, so I'm not quite sure what to expect. AC1 was my 'first love' and I compare everything to that.
I have mixed feelings about grouping. I loved it in AC1 because I could go out with one or two friends and tear things up or just pick a point on the map and go exploring. Obviously, you needed a full fellowship (7) to take on bosses or to even dare enter some dungeons, but you could play a vast majority of the game solo or in small groups without the downtime of having to search for a healer or tank.
After I left AC1, I went to FFXI which left a bad taste in my mouth for grouping. From my experience, FFXI is an EXP grind-fest that requires a full and balanced group to be really effective (although at higher levels, you could own everything with a couple of extremely overpowered rangers in your group). If you weren't playing a desired class, you could literally spend WEEKS standing around without a group. And being that you could not really solo ANYTHING for EXP after level 20 (unless you were a beastmaster), you did nothing except stand around (and no one wanted a beastmaster in their group because the group took an EXP hit for the beastmaster's pet). I hated having to be forced to play a certain class just in hopes of getting a group rather than being able to play what I wanted, when I wanted. I hope V:SoH won't force the issue of full & balanced grouping and have a full compliment of mobs & quests for solo and small group play. Don't get me wrong, I like grouping, but I don't like wasted nights of standing around looking to form a full group.
I'm not a big fan of PvP. Not because I dislike PvP, but because of the community associated with it. Most (not all) hardcore PvP'ers that I have met are immature, griefing egomaniacs that constantly whine about class balancing (or lack thereof), and cry when they are punished for ganking newbies. I'm all for duels or even instanced PvP in the case of guild or city battles.
Yes I have read the FAQ, and a good portion of the lore (which I LOVE, btw), which is why I have high hopes for V:SoH. But I do know not to get my hopes too high because this game has not even reached infancy. Going by recent MMO history, many changes are possible, if not immenent in V:SoH's future. And it is still possible for the whole project to be scrapped before release, much like a few other games I had my heart set on.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for this one. I just hope that when it comes down to crunch time, MS and Sigil will take notice to the great community anxiously awaiting release.

An EQ server that played and looked just like it did before the released Luclin. That'd be cool, but, as you said, hopefully Vanguard will help fill that old void caused by missing EQ Live.
ya i figured thats what ya ment, here is a intresting quote for ya....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In general, players view all their subsequent virtual worlds in the light cast from their first one. They will demand that features from their first world be added to their current world, even if those very features were partly responsible for why they left the first world. They'll say they hate treadmills, but if their first experience was in a virtual world with treadmills, then they'll gravitate towards other virtual worlds with treadmills, all the while still hating them.

that is why vanguard will be a hit imo, and that is why so many old eq players are looking forward to this game

Ack misquoted sorry Derekeen.
